Reds

This guy appeared to be well worth the risk. Are the Reds owners so hard up for cash they dump this guy after about an hour? When will the owners/FO start building for the future?
It wasn’t done for money. He won’t make enough to matter. They just didn’t value him more than the players they already had.

Don't think they care about winning. I guess somehow, I don't know how it works, but somehow, someway these businessmen/owners are getting tax breaks by owning a team and that is all they care about. I've already resigned myself to the fact the Reds are heading for another 100+ loss season in '23.
We won’t lose 100 but we won’t be a playoff team either. Next season should be about developing players. In 2024, EDLC, CES, McLain, Marte, Williamson, Abbott, Stout and I’m sure others im forgetting about should be available. That’s when we should be going all in trying to win. Also Moustakas will be off the books. I wouldn’t be surprised if Votto is a Red in 2024, it depends on how good he is next season. 20 million option with a 7 million buyout. He only has to be worth 13 million.

It's mind boggling we're well into the off season and the Reds have done absolutely zero toward fixing a woeful OF situation. Just can't have Senzel, Friedl, Fairchild, et al involved in a 2023 Reds OF. Louisville maybe but not a MLB OF.

Agreed, 2023 another rough season during the aftermath of the 2022 fire sale where you won't have Castillo, Mahle or the surprise turnaround of Drury to start off. They will go as far as the young pitching takes them. A lot of question marks offensively and need guys who can like India among many more to step up along with any prospects that make their debut in 2023. Have a feeling Fraley will be our Kyle Farmer and that just doesn't cut it if you expect to win which they don't in '23. Hoping they use 2023 to get some of the best prospects time to develop, buyout Moose/Votto to plug holes on the roster in 2024 and go from there.

not that big of a surprise. We will be shopping bargain basement. Probably get a couple players right before spring training like last season.

It's mind boggling we're well into the off season and the Reds have done absolutely zero toward fixing a woeful OF situation. Just can't have Senzel, Friedl, Fairchild, et al involved in a 2023 Reds OF. Louisville maybe but not a MLB OF.
Would rather dick off and let the rest of the league scoop up the most viable candidates the Reds could realistically sign with the budget limitations. Slim pickings for whatever is left. Beyond 2023, there will be no excuse for it afterwards with the money coming off the books.

Even then Cincinnati needs to be wise with who they splurge for with no allegiance to the Reds franchise. Would rather give long term extensions to India, Stephenson, Lodolo, Greene etc with the money to have a young core to build around before the next fire sale than sign another Moustakas. While I loved what Castellanos did in 2021 as a Red, who didn't think he would leave? I know Nick said he never heard from the Reds after the lockout (his words) in the interview with Chris Rose. No way in hell they were paying him with the direction Cincinnati headed with the transactions made over the last year. Wound up losing him and guys who have been apart of this franchise for 5+ years with the money hogged by Moustakas and for Nick to just walk. Keep what you have first!!!

Of course but there are still plenty of budget friendly contracts every winter that the Reds can piece together a winning roster of guys who can contribute. Stephenson & India are still under team control through 2026. While it would be nice to sign long term extensions before then, adding complementary pieces around them to have a legit chance to win starting in 2024 should be the goal here.

If the Reds trade these top INF prospects and keep Senzel my head may explode. Take these top prospects and find positions for them, other teams do, it's your freaking job!

Saw this in an article on MLB trade rumors. Talking about EDLC

According to one AL scout, “He’s the most athletic player I’ve ever seen. I could throw out some legendary names of athletes, but I’d rather not because I don’t want to put extra pressure on a kid. But I’ve never seen anybody even close with his athleticism to be quite honest.”

Look for Reds to screw this up. Perfect chance to unload India. I know he was ROY but his limited range has been exposed(rule change re shift will further expose him) plus he's never learned how to turn a DP.
Unless Cincinnati makes India their next Votto to pay long term, he'll get traded just like everyone else. My only concern about trading him now is selling low after 2022. Who knows if he reaches his 2021 numbers here again. I think he will but it's no guarantee with the overall lack of productive hitters around him in the lineup. His defensive struggles at 2B may be better off to transition to LF or DH eventually.

I can’t see the Reds extending India. To many good middle infield prospects coming up. If the Reds extend anyone, it should be Stephenson, Lodolo or Greene. Maybe even EDLC.

It's amazing 1 year removed from NL ROTY in the aftermath of another fire sale some are ready to throw the towel in on him. How did we get here? The Reds are in this position because they rarely sign any of their star players long term. Ditching him now is exactly what this franchise does to all of their stars. Rinse and repeat fire sales. You can bet it will happen with the next core to come up. How do we even know anyone of the prospects are going to be better for sure? YOU DON'T!! Mere speculation. Better know for damn sure before letting anyone walk. Not enough room? Make room!! It's about to be 2023 and no logic behind the lack of versatility in the Reds position players between the IF/OF besides with failures in Senzel & waiver wire scraps in Matt Reynolds. Just another way Cincinnati is behind in the current state of baseball.

Reds fans better get real and enjoy while we have them talents like India/Greene/Lodolo/Stephenson and whenever they arrive ELDC/Marte/Petty/Abbott/Phillips so forth dubbed can't miss prospects. No way in hell you're keeping all of them with the cheapskate inept goons that run the front office. Will be fortunate to sign 2 long term which is what this franchise did the last go around when choosing Bailey & Votto as their building blocks and fing it all up with Moustakas. Saw how that worked didn't we...This FO never learns! For goodness sake start keeping some damn players to build around. Worried about selling low?? Don't trade your stars 2 years into their career, get rid of the dead weight that keeps promising players down. Never going to win shit with this approach from the front office. Small market excuse goes so far with me when the Tampa Bay Rays are the blueprint at competing with a payroll lower than Cincinnati almost $35 million below the league average. Can you guess who is hogging quite a bit of that making just $3 million less than Judge in 2022? Cleveland 27th and Francona has 1 year under .500 there, 80-82 stepped away halfway through with health issues.

Baseball America came out with what they thought the Reds 2026 team would look like. This is my guess. This only includes players in the system.

C- Stephenson, I think he will be extended
1B- CES
2B Matt Mclain, I don’t think Indie will be extended so he will probably be gone by then.
SS Edwin Arroyo
3B EDLC
RF, Noelvi Marte
CF Mike Siani
LF Yerlin Confidan or Arial Almonte. May be pushing it a little on these two.

SP. Nick Lodolo. I think the Reds will extend one of Lodolo or Greene. My money is on Lodolo.

Stephenson needs to prove he can stay healthy for the most part over the next couple of seasons and maintain his offensive numbers throughout the course of an entire season as a full-time starter before I would sign him to a long term contract extension. If so, then by all means go for it as he will be one of the most coveted catchers on the market. A lot of question marks right now.

If ELDC/Greene reach their ceiling, I can't see a realistic scenario in which they sign long term extensions when they can test the market for more than what Cincinnati will pay. They may be able to sign a position player like CES or Marte, one of Greene/Lodolo or some other young pitcher to come up through the pipeline. With so many hypotheticals right now, the youth of this team and injuries to important players Cincinnati needs to be cautious. They have team control on Stephenson/India through 2026 and you should know by then the trajectory of players like them, ELDC, Marte, McLain, Greene/Lodolo so forth.

You have control of Lodolo and Greene till after the 27 season but if they are truly following the Rays model, they will have to be traded no later than the 2025 midseason ifThey are not extended. Reds could afford to lock up a player like EDLC if they do it early enough. Signing early gives the player insurance in case of injury. Take Greene and Lodolo for instance. A bad injury could mean the most they ever made in a season was 720,000. If they were injured next season that and their signing bonus is all they would ever get. If the Reds came out now and wanted to buy out a couple free agent years. That would be hard to turn down.

If the Reds came out now and wanted to buy out a couple free agent years. That would be hard to turn down.
ELDC at his ceiling is 10 year, $300 million + player and I think he'll bet on himself in the open market. Cincinnati's best chance would for him to be their next Votto to pay long term.

Saw a round table discussion last summer on MLBN and the question was posed: "Name a current young player who'll be a future superstar." Greene was named then they discussed and the 3 or 4 member panel all agreed he'll be top of the line but one person said and I'll never forget: "Greene will be a superstar...but not in Cincy." The implication was clear, the Reds either can't afford him or won't pay him his due.

I still think if the Reds want to extend him, they could. He’s already had one Tommy John surgery. He knows the risk he takes every time he throws a baseball. I’m sure he would like the security a long term contract would give him. That’s also why I think it’s more likely they extend Lodolo tho. Of course Lodolo has had issues of his own. Missed time with his back, which isn’t a good thing for a pitcher.

Always felt that way too about Lodolo as the more likely option to get a contract extension with the Reds. They definitely will want long term deals and can't blame any pitcher. Teams may not like it but as you were alluding to a couple of posts ago, it's insurance for the players in the case of an injury. I get the risk of another injury to Greene that has people concerned but TJ surgery has come a long way from the days when it would be a near career-ending surgery for some. I'm thrilled with the rookie seasons Nick Lodolo & Hunter Greene had when they were on the field, especially in the 2nd half with Greene starting 24 games, 5 more than anyone left on the roster. Reasons for optimism going forward.

Like these moves as well as signing Myers(FINALLY a guy with a little pop in his bat). Still need to dump Senzel, find a CF.
So happy Moose is on the loose. Opens the door up for so many deserving prospects. Casali coming in allows more usage for Stephenson at 1B or it even seems plausible to call up CES now with Votto getting ABs at DH. Today is a good day in Cincinnati. Not been too many of these over the last year or so. The steps that had to be taken to get on with the future. Definitely a lot of work to do still!

Why dump Senzel? He’s not blocking anyone and don’t cost much. No reason to give up on him now. Especially if we are going with 3 catchers. Only leaves room for 3 bench players. Senzel can play infield and outfield.

Cassili signing probably makes even less chance for Votto to DH. 3 catchers, none with ootions. You have to figure 2 of them will be in the lineup most days at either Carcher, DH or 1B

Bit of a stretch to say 2 catchers need to be in the lineup most days. Stephenson getting an occasional day off from behind the plate at 1B/DH and one of them at catcher then, sure! Not sure how you draw the conclusion that Casali makes it more unlikely Votto to get any ABs at DH, going to be 40 in September coming off surgery for a torn rotator cuff. If anything, quite the opposite and now room for CES to be called up at some point in 2023. These moves make sense if done to protect one of their best players Stephenson to preserve his bat with regular rest days, less wear and tear and to finally bring up deserving prospects who need to be called up in 2023 with Moose gone.

At no time during the 2020 season when the Reds had Casali, Stephenson & Barnhart did any 2 consistently see playing time at the same time in the lineup at other positions. Maile & Casali aren't exactly known for their bats and can't see them employed regularly at 1B/DH while Stephenson is catching. May as well kept Moustakas than to trot out that lineup most days with both Casali & Maile at C and DH as that lineup serves no purpose offensively. When Stephenson doesn't catch, he's logged 24 games at 1B, 6 at DH. When not starting at catcher, freeing him up at one those spots sliding Votto over however Bell decides is the best offensive lineup and gets playing time for 2 backups at catcher who know the reality of the situation they are in as reserves. If Cincinnati still plans to use Votto predominantly at 1B, I don't see how it has anything to do with the need to get Casali or Maile ABs at DH.

More of a chance Cincinnati starts 2023 off with the awful lineup they ended 2022 with before playing any 2 catchers at once most days when you consider the rest of the IF with Steer, India, Barrero, Senzel in the super utility role, Newman, Votto or to protect Stephenson from the daily grind as he was used last year. Even Myers logged 25 starts at 1B and will get breaks from the OF at 32. A rotation of players will likely get 1B/DH at-bats than any one player dominating the positions. I don't blame Cincinnati for playing it safe adding a couple of veteran catchers after the disastrous season behind the plate but we'll see if the season ends with all 3 or not.
