Jon,I was under the impression Dan Issel was third choice by Coach rupp behind Janky from Dayton but can't think of the other guy,can you help?

George Janky was #1 the second one escapes me.Issel read the Kentucky Kernel on his visit and saw he was #3 on the list .He returned to Batavia IL and committed to Wisconsin. Joe Hall saved the day by getting The Horse to change his mind.TeoJ nice to see my old Roomate picture on your Sig.Rest in Peace Case

Issel "The Horse" was a self made man.He stayed after practice for an hour taking corner jumpers..Some tow headed Student Manager shagged balls for Issel so he could get more shots in..Those were great times..

Played baseball against him in high school at Shelby County. I thought he was a better baseball player than basketball.

This may be the Kentucky Kernel article in question:

Link to Kentucky Kernel April 28, 1966: Lancaster to Have Player Surplus Next Year

From the article: "We still have one scholarship open and we have to get us a big boy," Lancaster said. "Bergman (Joe), Janky (George) and Issel (Dan) all talk good and Rick Mount isn't out of the picture. Although he isn't a big boy, he's supposed the best in the nation."

Not certain but based on this article sounds like Joe Bergman might have been the third guy. Doing a search, it looks like Bergman signed with Iowa where he redshirted a year and played on the freshman team but then transferred to Creighton where he played three seasons. He was drafted but never played in the NBA.

Janky played for Dayton, including a game against UK in the UKIT where Janky outscored Issel 19 to 13, although UK won the game.

Boxscore of Dayton vs. UK in UKIT: December 22, 1967

As with Bergman, Janky was drafted but didn't play in the NBA.

Funny how the rules have changed regarding coaches talking about prospective recruits.

Thanks Jon..Casey was my roommate my Sophomore year..As usual you are spot on.

Are you from Cropper? Case was my roommate and lifelong friend.Tragically he passed way too young of heart failure. The most competitive guy I ever met.

Some tow** headed Student Manager shagged balls for Issel so he could get more shots in..

There was a restaurant in Lexington that hung its newspaper review on the wall by the front door so you could read it as you waited for your table. The reviewer spelled that "toe headed".

**Tow is flax straw. It's pale and fine and so it became a cliche for blond hair. My wife and I laughed so hard I was afraid we wouldn't get seated. I wished the newspaper had simply made a typo and written "two headed". Either way worked for me.

Back to your regular thread.

I would like to see a statistis analysis of Cal vs. Pitino

From the unforgettables season thru the runners up to Arizona and Cal from 2010 to last years 38-1 team.

your point is made..

your point is made..

It is? What was my point? I just like the phrase "tow headed." It's old fashioned and the spelling in the restaurant review from 30 years ago shows that it was old fashioned even then. The reviewer had obviously only heard it and never read it.

Never mind...No offense meant.

No,from Trimble County we played them in regional finals,Casey was very good but so was Ritter and Miller. They also had another pitcher that was very good can't think of name.Casey was friends with my cousin they played some golf together, well Casey played my cousin was there...........

Just to follow up on this. I did look into this issue a little more and did find what I believe was the Kernel article that Issel saw during his campus visit. It wasn't an article which was published that week (which did mention Issel) but an article from a few weeks earlier that simply mentioned that Janky and Bergman were scheduled to visit UK in the near future.
