Post-Georgetown Starting 5

Wagner to talented to dump after one exhibition game. You start him until you cannot. Vs Gtown isnt a game that should make that decision.
Ha, I'm just playing for the most part. Mostly just posting who I thought played the best for this one game. Definitely have to play Wagner and Edwards for the long haul. But, man did I love what I saw from Dillingham. Dude is going to have to get significant minutes one way or the other.

Not saying Shep's a bad choice---kid belongs.

Love Dilly. Needs to SLOOOOOOOOOOOOW down, play within the game.

Yeah. I would start Rob or Reed over DJ. Pretty clear they’re better players. At least at the 1 anyway. DJ is not a 1. Crystal clear IMO.

It's not about starting lineup for JR High reasons-it's about getting the guards on the court who will facilitate/create and make game easier for teammates for production. It's stubborn to not start the game with that on the court.

Now the most promising thing--a year ago this time UK won their exhibition 56-38. I'll take some shaky moments with the pace/scoring up and 92 pts with a lot to work on and missing 3 bigs.....take that. Last year Oscar was missing but 56 pts in an exhibition was a hint of what was to come-struggling to score the ball and long stretches of inept offensive futility.

Rob looked great. He's out of control at times but the talent is clearly there. 16 on 7/11 shooting 5 assists to 2 TO is fantastic. Reed's passing looked good, not sure how well he'll create his own shot against big guards but he'll be solid for us. I'm going to wait and see on Wagner. I feel like the first half was a shock to the new guys other than Rob. They've probably never been so well matched up before. Mitchell looked great! Edwards seems to maybe let the game come to him too much. We'll see how well that works with ball dominant guards.

What's exciting to me is to see how far he's come from the Canada games. Imagine if we see a similar leap between here and, say, SEC play. The kid has a high ceiling even if he has some ups and downs along the way.

Dillingham is a dog! Thiero very good along with Mitchell. Liked Reeves, Shepard and Burks but the rest seemed to be uncomfortable. Too many expectations perhaps.

Why are some people so fixated on starting lineups? They mean nothing.

Way to many players against Gtown played no defense. It’s the same thing, guard or forward has the ball, the Kentucky defender comes up tight resulting in a blowbuy easy basket or a foul. Olay defense As of now, they have no concept of a helping defense. This team really needs a rim protector.

I agree the defense was lacking most of the game. But these are capable defensive guys.

Just gotta learn.

We did guard the pick and roll well a few times.

We haven’t seen that for a couple years.

this can't be a serious statement.
He doesn't. I mean he is still a very good player but he isn't very cerebral. He has that type of game that can be very effective against less athletic guys but guys who are decent athletes and experienced he can get locked up. He isn't a great athlete but he is a dog mentally and thats why I like him.

Hey, that's going to upset the "we were well matched up with NAIA Georgetown" crowd. 😂

Mitchell
Thiero
Reeves
Sheppard
Dillingham
It would be hard to argue that lineup based on that 1 game, without question. Clearly, we need to see a few more games to have a definite answer.

The thing I love is the talented depth and the fact that the team doesn't fall off when a couple guys leave the floor. We've had teams like that many times- where the starters are so much better than the 2nd team that you can't afford to give them any rest. This team isn't that way.

What I see (and this is without any of the 7 footers) is about 8 guys who are very versatile, can all score from anywhere on the floor, are solid defensively, and any who could potentially lead the team in scoring.

Edit: the biggest issue I see right now is rebounding. We gave up way too many offensive rebounds and easy put backs. That can be fixed quickly with the 7-footers or even from guys focusing more on rebounding and boxing out.

OP is just creating dialogue about who do you think our best five players are. Not sure why everyone is caught up on the semantics of Starting Five.

What five players do you think is our best lineup

I definitely think its consists of Reeves, Mitchell, and Sheppard.

Then either Thiero/Edwards and Wagner/Dillngham

Edwards has way more potential than Thiero, but it hasn't translated to actual play yet

No way! He’s wayyyyy better than Wheeler. Just saying that I don’t see this superstar potential with him. I think he could be a great scorer. Just don’t believe he’s a great choice at PG. Don’t feel as if he gets others involved enough.

I was trying to say he will be the one that catches the blame like Wheeler last year. I was one of the main ones blaming Wheeler, he was terrible.. lol but he also caught 💩 even if it wasn’t his fault.. lol

I think DJ will be good, idk about super potential or anything like that. He’s not Wall or Fox good , that’s a fact. I honestly see him as maybe a mix of TyTy and Quickley.

Either way, at least we have options at guard and won’t have to rely solely on DJ which I’m happy about.

Just worry that Cal will be bullish in regards to sticking too long with Wagner at the 1. Feel like he’s better off the ball.

Reeves and Mitchell are the only 2 locks due to experience and play.

All the freshmen have had good and bad ganes, including Shep, in both Canada and the first exhibition.

All the guards are gonna play a ton anyways so idc who starts. We lack size though so edwards is gonna start with thiero and Mitchell IMO.

That’s how Cal teaches them, that’s why we struggle without a rim protector.

I think Dilly and Wagner in the back court together makes the most sense. I’d Try Dilly/Wagner/Reeves/Mitchell/Bradshaw when healthy. Make another lineup that swaps out Edwards and Mitchell and Reeves and Sheppard in some combination. That’s my prediction for best end of year lineup at least. The main point is let Rob run point and let DJ attack off the ball.
