Here is a breakdown of how each Power 5 conference + the Big East compare in the Pomeroy rankings. I did this to get an idea of how competitive the SEC has been for the teams that have a pulse, given the last 3-4 teams are so terrible and weigh the conference down in such rankings so much. We all know the top 100ish teams are the ones to keep an eye on. As you will see, the numbers and the eye test show that the SEC is much better than many in the media want to admit.

The average of each conferences top 10 teams:
38.5 - ACC
38.7 - SEC
41.7 - Big Ten
43.8 - Big 12
59.0 - Big East (they only have 10 teams, so their one really bad team drags them down a lot here)
60.9 - PAC 12

The average of each conferences Top 100 Pomeroy teams:
30.4 - Big 12 - good lord they are good
38.5 - ACC
38.7 - SEC
39.0 - Big East
41.7 - Big 10
54.4 - Pac 12 - This is pitiful

Top 75 Pomeroy teams:
24.6 - Big 12
28.1 - ACC
35.5 - Big East
36.9 - Big 12
38.7 - SEC
57.6 - PAC 12
But the SEC is the ONLY conference in America with 10 top 75 teams, so SEC's top 75 average is dragged down by some teams barely in the top 75. Every other conference has at least two of their top ten teams eliminated with this metric

Top 50 Pomeroy teams
17.9 - ACC
18.1 - Big 12
21.7 - PAC 12
25.8 - Big Ten
29.1 - SEC
31.1 - Big East

Top 25 Pomeroy teams (only included if a conference had more than 2 eligible teams)
7.4 - ACC
16.0 - Big Ten
16.5 - Big 12
16.7 - SEC

good to see. the sec isnt as trash as many other fans/media seems to think. Personally feel acc/b12 then the sec, b10,be,p12

Good information...thanks for sharing. Helps further to dispel this silly notion that the SEC is "garbage". People become so enamored with the Top 25 that they forget there are some pretty damned good teams overall just outside that cutoff. Lots of good-quality basketball being played in the SEC, regardless of the crowd sizes.

You just have to understand that northerners hate the SEC. Just the facts and a lot of it goes to the Baron. The eastern writers hated his success, attitude, knowledge and never forgot. And now the 2nd and 3rd generation yankees still hate us. Nothing has changed in the last 60+ years. Just got to live with it and know the yanks are wrong so be it.
