I'm always amazed at people who think Alabama football is like Kentucky basketball. No freaking way. This fan base's worst fan wouldn't hold a candle to the majority in that fan base. The crazies in that group are even worse than the Harvey Updyke and Phyllis.
Phyllis is one of those fans that makes us all feel like we are sane. I do believe some of the Finebaum show callers "Play it up" while on air, but people like her are truly that crazy. The Tammy lady that is an Auburn fan is just as bad, if not worse. She was not upset at all they lost because Bama lost. Sounds like a typical UL fan to me.
She made me feel bad to be a Southerner. I'm sure she embarrassed more than a few Bama fans with that rant.
There's a good book about Alabama football called Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer.
Very smart book that gets at why people are fans and the psychological stuff behind fandom. (Its close cousin on the basketball side is Will Blythe's excellent To Hate Like This is to Be Happy Forever--but be warned, Blythe is a North Carolina fan.)
The Alabama book gets into some stuff regarding that fanbase, including one instance where the author catches some of their fans in some outright racism.

"Outright racism"? Well when Arabs love Israelis, when Black Panthers love whites then outright racism might be news. Right now it's ho hum and the "author" and you should get out of the house more often.

The author quotes Alabama fans calling their black quarterback the n-word in the parking lot after a loss.
Not really sure that's "ho hum."
Do you remember the story of the white quarterback at Grambling in the 90s and what he endured nearly every day?
Funny how it's only an outrage in one of those situations.
