OT: Fixing the NBA

could it possibly be one of the main channels we've watched the NBA on for a long time no longer has games or inside the NBA in TNT? People not realizing where to go to see the games that replaced TNT can easily explain ratings being down. I mean I love basketball and I didnt even pay attention to who got the rights to the NBA instead of TNT?
I don’t really watch the NBA, but I would binge watch Inside the NBA if possible.

Nobody is triggered. We just aren't buying that the WBNA is a good product. Nobody is triggered. We're just a bit tired of ESPN insulting our intelligence. And we know it isn't a 'if you just give it a chance, we promise you'll like it'. It's ESPN trying to protect an investment. It's snake oil 101. And if you want to get political conspiracy about it, it's Disney trying to get more agenda into the sports realm.
Bro is hella triggered

If you don’t watch, you should not comment about the NBA. (My Opinion)

I love The League. It’s as much fun before Christmas (like cupcake college games)

That’s the case for me too. I’m not sure why either . I always felt like college basketball took a big hit when they broke up the big East years ago .

Now all the conferences are all over the place .

Same with me.

I don't watch much basketball outside UK.

I will however watch a ton of college and pro football outside UK and the Titans. If I just watched football for UK football and the TN Titans I'd have put a bullet in my head a long time ago lol.

Shorten the season by 10 games.

Add incentives for winning (Tie it to bonuses or salary)

Add incentives for playing defense

Shorten the rosters by 2 to 3 players.

You sound like their target audience, "bro". Look, if you like it, watch it. More power to you. But you can't convince most sports fans that the WNBA is good basketball. I like the NHL, but I understand why most people think it's boring. But, the difference between the NHL and WNBA is that a even the worst NHL player is actually good at hockey.

It amuses me to no end how deeply triggered so many people are that a thing they don't watch (wnba) exists and they are so cruelly forced to hear about it's existence.
Since I posted it I assume you’re referring to me. IMO It’s a shit game with shit players who think that the world should revolve around them. Triggered? Hardly. Rarely give it a second thought but to see the Time athlete of the year being bullied into saying there’s white privilege in, wait for it, professional basketball is just insane. Most racist professional organization in the world.

I haven't really thought any of these through, so they might be terrible...but here's a few.

1. Push the 3 point line back 1.5 feet. If that means widening the floor by 3-5 feet, then fine. If you don't want to widen the court, then have the 3 point line a uniform distance, thus eliminating the corner 3. This should slightly reduce overall 3 point percentages and create more space to operate and guard in the mid-range.

2. Shrink the width of the lane from 16 feet to 12 feet to match the NCAA. Change offensive 3 seconds to 5 seconds. Hypothetically, this should put a little more emphasis on big guys and improve/encourage post play.

3. Stop rewarding offensive players for creating contact. If you create the contact in any unnatural way, then no foul. Give the defense more leeway to contest shots. Hopefully, this would encourage players to pull up from the mid-range, shoot floaters, or pass more often rather than just flailing wildly in hopes of getting two free throws.

4. Start calling traveling, moving screens, offensive push-offs, and egregious carries. I don't think you can totally fix the carrying problem, because it's so ingrained at every level of basketball. But don't let the offensive player use it to gain an impossible advantage. With regards to screens, calling moving screens--primarily on-ball--would reduce the effectiveness of the pick and roll/pop and incentivize teams to run/initiate alternative offenses. The value of enforcing traveling violations is obvious.

5. Require players to appear in 73 games to be eligible for any awards and thus contract incentives tied to those awards. Asking players to show up to work 90% of the time is not unreasonable. If it truly is unreasonable, then the length of the season needs to be shortened. With that said, in 19 seasons John Stockton played 82 games 16 times in a much more physical league than now with many deep playoff runs.

6. Reduce the number of playoff teams back to 16. Put more emphasis on the regular season.

7. In the first round of the playoffs, reward the higher seed with an automatic win in a best of 5 series. For instance, in the 1 vs. 8 matchup, the 1 seed would start the series with a 1-0 lead. Therefore, they would only need to win 2 out of 4 actual games to win the series. For the 8 seed to win the series, they would have to win 3 out of 4 games. This puts a huge emphasis on the regular season and getting a top 4 seed in your conference. Along with this, I would potentially consider eliminating the conferences all together and just seed the teams 1 through 16, and giving the aforementioned advantage to the top 8 seeds.

8. Give all lottery teams an equal chance at all picks. Thus the 14th worst team would have the same chance at the first pick as the worst team and vice versa. The goal of this would be to discourage out-right tanking.

I enjoy watching the big games and playoffs. I usually don’t follow before all star break tho. I will agree the effort is lacking often and the prima donnas get a little old. Still the highest level of bball on the planet

You were one of three to bring up the WNBA in a thread that wasn't about the WNBA. That's what amuses me. You guys totally don't care about it and "rarely give it a second thought" ... except when you bring it up to talk about it when nobody's even talking about it. You're so transparently triggered by it, it's clearly on your mind if YOU are bringing it up. I don't watch the WNBA, the MLB, or NASCAR, so they aren't subjects I talk about and it doesn't bother me to turn on ESPN and see them talking about them. But it CLEARLY does bother you that something you don't watch exists.

“Transparently triggered?” 😂😂😂😂. YOU must feel strongly about this with the all caps words LOL.
It’s a discussion board and I added to the NBA discussion since they have kept that dumpster fire afloat for years. If you don’t like it don’t $#%*? read it or comment on it. You people aren’t going to change the opinions of those who don’t like the product.

I am so glad for the WNBA. It’s hilarious to watch the compilations of multiple missed layups on the same play. I hope people keep supporting it and I will keep supporting the fail clips.

Nah, like I said this amuses me.

And FYI, multiple laugh-cry emojis is one of the biggest tells that someone is triggered.

To the people that don’t enjoy the NBA. Outside of Kentucky basketball do you enjoy college basketball ?
I think tons of people here would say they don't watch games outside of Kentucky. Which is why I've always laughed a bit when this board says the fanbase is incredibly intelligent, or when people used to complain about things Cal did that every other coach also does. They just weren't aware of it because they don't watch any other teams play.

Yet the TV networks overpaid for it. Weird.
Because it's literally the only thing keeping people paying for the TV Networks. Live sports is the last stand. So the networks have no choice but to overpay, because even if they overpay and don't make as much money as they would if they paid a fair value for the tv package, if they don't overpay and lose the bid they'll cease to exist.

Right now people watch TNT for basically two reasons: the NBA and by chance if they're scrolling through the channels and land on a movie they like. TNT lost the NBA after this year, and that second reason isn't enough to sustain the channel but itself.

Then why are you so staunchly defending it if YOU don’t care or think about it? Why would you care what we think then?
What am I defending? I don't think the wnba is very entertaining either, just like I don't think the MLB or nascar are. Difference is im not triggered by them existing. It is very entertaining to me to see grown ass men all in their feels about a sport they don't watch, and it's a hell of a lot of fun to see how easily I can rile them up over it.

I don't watch the WNBA at all, but I really do think it's funny how you guys absolutely cannot resist the urge to post about how much you hate it. It's like clockwork any time a women's sport or the NBA is mentioned. Someone has to chime in to remind us they hate the WNBA, like anyone actually gives a crap to hear how much you dislike women's sports for the 1000th time.

If you see a commercial for the WNBA just ignore it. It's not that hard. I don't go online complaining about all the commercials I see for the Masked Singer during an NFL football game. It's not exactly shocking that TV networks advertise programs they show.

Nah, nobody complains about other women’s sports because they don’t act insufferable like the WNBA and Women’s soccer. People don’t complain much about women’s tennis, women’s golf etc because the common factor isn’t gender, it is shoving their agenda down the throats of Americans

Good the f for you…here’s an idea, do the same for my wnba posts and you’ll be much less miserable. My post was a simple sentence that could’ve easily been bypassed by both of you but you’ve drawn this out bigger than it originally was. Who’s making the big deal about it?

PS…I can post whatever I want (within board rules) whenever I want to and you’re not doing a goddamn thing to change that.

My God your use of the word “triggered” over and over and over is right out of the beta male handbook. It makes me pity you and you’re nowhere near me being riled up, you don’t have the ability to do that, sorry.

I just don't get why a couple folks here are so angry. Jesus Christ could return and some would be lashing out at others about which Febreze spray smells the best. Rivalry day and a week before Christmas Eve and guys online are acting like kids over something none of us actually care or really think about...the WNBA. Shew.

Lol, there's no agenda. The WNBA and international women's soccer are really the only women's sports that get major air time outside of the tennis tournaments, which are shown and advertised as one entity with the men's tournaments. This is literally just capitalism in action, TV networks are advertising their product.

Gave you two example of sports that doesn’t get flak that are womens sports which are golf and tennis. Plenty of people believe there is an agenda with WNBA and I don’t feel like getting into that today. If you don’t think there is one, it could be you’re not paying attention coz their definitely is one.

1) As many have said, crack down on traveling and carrying, it is ruining the game. This Eurostep BS where the guy actually drags or sometimes taps his trailing foot on the court is traveling. Also, guys are being allowed to lift their pivot and jump one-legged off the other foot. Again, traveling.
2) Stop all the moving screens. A ball screen has become damn near impossible to defend.

Seems to me that you are the one who was "triggered" by someone expressing their disinterest in the wnba. NBA and wnba are both professional basketball leagues. It's not crazy to think they would both be mentioned in a thread discussing pro ball. Perhaps you should look in a mirror and think about how you react to things before you attempt to call out others.

I love the NBA. I don’t watch it everyday simply because I don’t have time. But I watch at every chance.

I will watch the WNBA sometimes too.

NBA TV is down. Attendance is up sharply.

The game needs some changes but it’s the best players in the world playing the best sport in the world.
