I used to watch the NBA a little bit between middle school and college. Recently, though, I have no desire to sit and watch at all.

I saw a tweet by Clay Travis that suggests I might not be the only one, with NBA viewership decreasing by 48% since 2012.

Replies largely mirror my qualms with the NBA: players sitting out, tons of games, and a near complete homogenization of systems and player skills. It's boring watching an NBA game.

Players can carry the ball and travel. Defense is basically punished. Offense sold tickets, but we now have too much of a good thing, IMO. NBA games are lifeless, stale products. Moreover, personally, I feel like defense has suffered for the same reason it has in the NFL – stars are commodities and investments, and hard fouls or aggression towards them should be punished severely.

That's great from an investment standpoint, but it's kind of like having a really nice China set that nobody's allowed to use. The pieces are just for looks and once viewing it has lost all novelty, the set has completely lost its utility.

Furthermore, the NBA has a near universal system: drive, kick, shoot, rebound, drive, kick, shoot.... Yeah, that's great, but basketball now has something of a "meta build," to borrow a gaming term. Everyone does the same thing and strives for the exact same players. The NBA isn't a chess match, it's a game of who's got better cards.

An idea I've toyed with for a while is how the NBA would look if half the games were 3 point "on" games and 3 point "off" games. I watched UK's win against Duke in '78 when Goose got loose, and it's such a completely different game that emphasized post moves, strength, interior passing, cutting, and more.

Teams wouldn't be able to sell out on buying three point experts at each position. You'd need traditional big men, and they'd have to have expanded roles even in the 3-point games because they're an investment just like a Klay Thompson or Steph Curry.

Now, I don't think that'll solve the NBA's myriad problems, and I certainly don't think it'll ever get implemented. However, as a biologist, I know that if you have an environment suited for one organism and one organism only, it'll fill all the niche space available. We need a diverse ecosystem to create a space where multiple organisms (styles) can compete and thrive.

So, I'm interested in what your ideas are or how you'd react if the NBA has 3pt on and off games. Maybe even on or off halfs or quarters.

Of course, defense needs to be rewarded again, offense needs to be punched down a bit, and other factors need to be addressed, so again, I'm interested to hear what your thoughts are on all this.

If nothing is done, I doubt I'll ever watch even a quarter of an NBA game again, and it seems that's a growing sentiment among basketball fans.

The ultimate problem is always going to be that basketball is a player-driven sport and the players, owners and players union all know this. They have all the power and they're never going to agree to anything like load management policies unless they have to. They play the game in a way that might be highly efficient, but also in a way that requires the least amount of effort, which is roaming around for 3pt shots and not giving up their bodies unless they have to. Unfortunately, us fans don't want to watch a 3pt shooting conest.

Whats likely going to happen is that fans will continue to tune out, and new fans won't be brought in because the game just isnt compelling. They're not going to get the new TV deals and salaries are going to stall, or possibly decline. I had a friend tell me that the NBA is largely being propped up by international fans (China, Europe, South America all have international players in the NBA as the NBA becomes more of a global game).. i didn't really believe that until recently. The NBA is in bad shape.

One would think the NBA will be forced to capitulate at some point. The American market is not insignificant, and it's only a matter of time before the new markets realize the game is a boring, spiritless shooting contest.

I don't know the NBA very well, so I don't know the fixes. But, I will say, I've been a sports guy all my life, and the NBA has (in seemingly a natural progression by its own doing) become my least favorite sport. The game got incredibly boring. You can tell it's 75% effort until about the 5:00 min. And that 5:00 generally takes an hour due to too many timeouts. Also, the playoffs seem to take seven months to play out. Someone above me said it's a player driven league. I don't dispute that. But it's hard to find interest in a league who's own players seemingly don't have a lot of interest or desire to compete. I don't care how much money the league makes, it's become a bad product.

Just wait until LeBron and Steph retire, they are still rating bumps in the twilight of their careers.

The decline of the NBA is unfortunate, used to love the sport but haven’t even been able to get into the playoffs for the last few years. It is obviously a star driven league whether that be a player or a franchise, and I don’t see anyone waiting in the wings ready to step up and dominate.

Scoring 120 points in a game is only exciting if it doesn’t happen every night. Try enforcing more penalties on offensive players and let defenders be more physical, I miss the old slugfests from back in the day. Need to find a way to adjust the rules where multiple styles can be successful.

Viewership goes down. Ad dollars must go down. That means salaries have to go down.

The NBA could get upside down real quick with these long-term contracts.

For those who have lost, or are losing interest in the league, can you pinpoint when it started to happen? Did a certain player or team fade? Was there a rule change or certain change in the game?

For me, it was the around the end of prime Shaq, the Shaq Kobe Lakers, and the end of the Reggie Miller Pacers run. I don't know if that means anything, other than that's when I started to lose interest.

For me, it was the woke 2020 year when the NBA went full retard. You never go full retard.

I like the NBA well enough to get League Pass because I love watching the best basketball players on the planet making amazing plays, especially since my interest in college basketball doesn't extend beyond watching UK and ETSU because of the emotional attachments. Most nights, college basketball games are rock fights dominated by whistle happy officials and for most of the nation, it has devolved into a four week sport that starts in March.

Get rid of the defensive 3 second rule and enforce rules against carries and traveling.

The playoff expansion just exacerbates the players not taking the regular season seriously. You can afford to coast, load manage, etc if you're not really worried about missing the playoffs. They tried to fix one problem (tanking) and managed to make a different problem worse. I'd get rid of the play in games. Not sure how else to make the regular season more valuable without shrinking playoffs even further, and they're not going to give up that sweet media money.

I think for me it's just that the players don't give a ton of effort anymore, and each game on its own, really doesn't matter. It's too long of a season and players know that as well. All that matters is getting to 41 wins (actually maybe 36 because they added teams to the playoffs), and then you can turn it on in the post season.

The high scoring or 3pt shooting doesn't bother me AS much as it bothers most others, but I also don't prefer it either. For me the players just don't seem to care much.

Very good post.

I’ll just add thst the NBA now looks/plays more like an all-star game.

Reggie going against the Knicks was great stuff for me. I even bought mini season tickets and playoff tickets. Over the last several years/decade honestly have made me not give a darn about the NBA game. Haven’t watched a game in years.

I despise how blatant the NBA became in “protecting” their stars. LeBron and his flops and constant bitching are things I despise. Add in their insistence on forcing the viewpoints of the LeBrons and others who basically have a HS education upon us—especially the whole bending the knee to China while criticizing the US—was just too much. But hey got to make cheap sneakers and opening up new markets is so important, please just ignore the hypocrisy.

Rant over.

Yup. Pretty much nailed it.

Enforce carry/traveling violations and you'll give the defenses a fighting chance to compete with the offense without it devolving into a rock fight. You can't stop athletes at this level by giving them extra steps.

Step one to fix the NBA: Stop letting your biggest named players become such political mascots that it turns off half the country.

My son is home from college and we were watching the Nebraska vs IU game and he says if they called carrying like they did 10 years ago there would be a violation on every possession.

People like to act like these guys are great ball handlers compared to the old players when in reality they look closer to a running back compared to what was allowed 20/30/40 years ago.

-Not everyone can afford league pass.

-Several years ago LaMelo Ball said that he doesn’t like watching basketball games, only highlights. I think that is probably a growing trend for some people.

-Not every team is the Warriors, but most teams don't realize that.

-Increase in fouls. Constant stoppage of play is not fun to watch.

LeBron James' antics have really hurt the league.

My losing interest started with "The Decision". And it has taken a free fall ever since.

It amuses me to no end how deeply triggered so many people are that a thing they don't watch (wnba) exists and they are so cruelly forced to hear about it's existence.

Made 3 - worth three points
Missed 3 - one point deduction
Penalize them for shooting so many threes, which has ruined the game.
Man I don’t know how this would turn out but I’d love to see a few games. Cap it at 5-10pt max deduction per quarter maybe. Should help stop them from jacking up threes constantly.

It's an absolutely terrible idea if you tried to actually implement it, you may as well just eliminate the 3pt shot. It would make a 40% three point shooter earn 0.6pts per shot: equivalent to a 30% 2pt shot or a present 20% 3pt shot. It wouldn't just make threes less efficient, it would make them the least valuable shot in the game.

Nobody is triggered. We just aren't buying that the WBNA is a good product. Nobody is triggered. We're just a bit tired of ESPN insulting our intelligence. And we know it isn't a 'if you just give it a chance, we promise you'll like it'. It's ESPN trying to protect an investment. It's snake oil 101. And if you want to get political conspiracy about it, it's Disney trying to get more agenda into the sports realm.

could it possibly be one of the main channels we've watched the NBA on for a long time no longer has games or inside the NBA in TNT? People not realizing where to go to see the games that replaced TNT can easily explain ratings being down. I mean I love basketball and I didnt even pay attention to who got the rights to the NBA instead of TNT?

I believe this is an underrated point . Back in the day I would get up early to watch sportscenter just to try to catch the Orlando/Houston highlights just to see what my fav player Tmac did that day. If he played on ESPN or TNT no way would I miss a game . Today if he played I could easily just go to YouTube to catch those highlights .

I’m sure all of the streaming on illegal sites hasn’t helped one bit either .

It’s still on TNT right now . I think they are moving to ESPN in 2025 .
