Not a big Gottlieb fan but

he did make some good points when he called in to Matt Jones on the post game show on Saturday. He did say the refs gave us awful calls by the way. The two things he said that stood out were that when Booker was hot they did not keep feeding him like in the pros which I agree with. The other thing that Gottlieb said that I absolutely agree with is KY gets no easy buckets and should have more outlet passes to the PG's from the big men at half court rather than bring the ball up against set sagging defenses. Say what you want about Gottlieb, but UK should use their defense to create more easy buckets and that would take some stress off scoring against these zone and sagging defenses.

Have Booker run the baseline with Willie and Karl setting screens for him, have Aaron on one wing, tell the PG to penetrate and look for either Aaron or Booker if the defense collapses, go to the basket if they don't, or lob it for Willie for an oop.

Probably the worst drawn up play ever though.

Excellent observations. We are not getting enough run outs. Our bigs are not finishing or passing out of the post. Booker should be taking more shots than anyone on the team until he goes cold. He was open a bunch but our point guard never looked his way but passed to the other side of the floor.

I agree with that.... When Booker is hot, unless Ulis is in the game, they try to get Harris hot.... Andrew needs to get the ball to Booker, if Aaron is not hitting... ULis needs to get the ball to Aaron, if Booker is cold... Plus, Trey should get the ball more around the 20 foot range, all the time... He has a great shop...

We need to go back to team work and not worry who is getting the shots, but be rooting for each other... Some days it would be Aaron and some would be Booker.... If that scenario is happening, and I admit, I've thought it.....

He's absolutely right. The hot hand is something that coaches go away from too often, I think they are just overthinking and/or overcoaching the game. If I have a hot guy when I am coaching my team in Strat-O-Matic Basketball, that dude is getting the ball every single chance I can get it to him. Same with plus matchups. Sometimes you just have to let the way the game is playing out dictate the playcalling and who gets the shots.

Gottlieb, Dakich, etc. are stupid quite often, but they all make good points at one time or the other.

Lamb was a great college player for sure! Booker is probably a better NBA prospect because of his size.

Booker was open all game long but our guys chose to ignore him, he was on and I'm really surprised our coaches and our guards didn't get him the ball where he could set his feet. He was lucky to get the shots he got.

Those are all good points but it's all pretty inconsequential if he didn't mention that WCS played football in high school as a wide receiver.

I don't want to be the "ref guy," but I think it is fair to say we didn't just forget how to score in the paint overnight...Our bigs are getting absolutley mauled, sometimes even when they don't have the ball. I'm sorry, but that is affecting our ability to score at the rim.

That being said, though, I'm not worried about the last two games. Conference play is a different animal. I know we played a solid OOC schedule, but every team we play in conference, especially on the road, is going to be a battle. It's no different than it's ever been. And to top it off..The SEC is much better than a lot of folks expected, me included. But that's not important if we do one thing...Play with energy.

We are the best defensive team in the country if we play hard, and it showed Saturday. We just couldn't throw the ball in the ocean on the offensive side. But after the first 16 minutes or so, we absolutely clamped down defensively. That's how we have to play.

at times I noticed the a and m defense pushing the back court way back....close to half court....the shot clock was like 15 or less before the back court was set at the top of the key. we haven't seen that often this year...the guys seemed a little unsure of themselves....tentative. maybe that's what cal means when he talks about getting their "mojo" back.

I think when Willie and Karl are in the game we should do more lobs to our guards! If Willie comes high to set screens and KAT slides out to the elbow then the baseline is or can be open to the back lob to Booker or Aaron. I don't advocate doing this alot but it could be there a couple times a game.

The way Booker shoots the ball, they should be setting him up with a lot of screens.

2 things about Cal that I have come to terms with, yet they drive me nuts...

1) he never attaches the opposing teams best player to try and get them into foul trouble. This was a staple of the teams that we had back in the 90's where we were a mismatch at most, if not all positions. Defenses couldn't sag or play off as much so we went right at the best player on the opposing team. If we were able to get them into foul trouble its was a dead issue. Even if the opposing teams best player gets an early foul we never work on them. Wish we would do more of it.
2) is the timeout thing at the end of the half/game. Makes me nuts but it's his thing so whatever.

Love Cal and not complaining but those two things make me crazy.

I think Cal knows all this, however, he's more concerned with us working on things that we can not yet do so easily so by the end of the year, we will have a full arsenal.

And the ref/rules emphasis this year was supposed to be cleaning up the play in the paint. I haven't seen any evidence of it it being cleaned up all season long.

I'll say I partially agree with this. I don't remember exactly when it was but one of Booker's 3s in the second half was assisted by Towns from under the goal. It was a beautiful play, IMHO. Towns got the ball down low, the defense collapsed and he passed to an open Booker on the opposite side. I really enjoy it when our guys are playing together and moving the ball efficiently. There were a few times in the game the other day when I thought our guards needed to drive to get the defense to collapse and pass to the open shooter, rather than just pass it off without driving it. We'll get it together though... and when we do we'll dismantle other defenses.

It sure does seem like a lot of things are wrong, or people are playing bad when something as simple as the little orange bouncy round thing not going in the steel circle thing. If we just start making our open looks and lay ups, all this bad stuff and problems goes away. Funny, when we are shooting better than 50% from the field, we score more, other team then presses more to keep up, we get more mistakes off them because they are trying too hard (kind of like us now), get a couple run out dunks, swag comes back, boom, UK up 20 everyone high fiving, smiling, chest bumping. It all comes down to one simple thing, hitting shots. We are not doing that. Just put the orange ball in the hole, the rest will take care of itself. We are just too talented to keep shooting like we have.

The thing though is that we shot it well against Ole Miss.

The problems seem to be focus- and intensity-related, as most people have pointed out, but we also are going to have to find a way to attack these weird, maddeningly tight zones. Threes bailed us out against Ole Miss, but the way TAMU and Ole Miss were collapsing into the paint and begging our outside shooters to shoot was very similar.

Need to see some different strategy tonight to get the big men engaged early.

So you're saying all they have to do is make shots? Jeez, did someone tell Cal about this? I don't know why the guys stopped making shots. It seems like something that would be high up on the priority list of a basketball player. I'm just glad you were able to solve the problem.

Yeah dumbass, Cal even said the exact same thing. We make all the bunnies and open looks, these games are not close. Ole Miss played way above their heads, so that is just one of those days. The point of the post which I am not shocked, went right over your head like a errant AKT fastball 5 rows into the stands. It is not as bad as some "the world is ending" idiots are screaming, we are / where in a shooting slump, we do not need a major over haul of starters, defensive schemes, whole new offense. Well I guess we have identified another band member, Johnny tell him what he has won.

Listen, jackass, every single person on this board knows that they need to make more shots. Your simplistic, idiotic reply adds exactly zero value to the discussion. Teams typically don't just all of the sudden start missing shots they typically make unless there's a reason. Is it because they aren't moving the ball enough to get better looks? Maybe they are settling for long jumpers instead of driving? Maybe they've lost their legs after practicing more? Maybe guys aren't going up strong and handling contact inside? Who knows what the reason really is, but your stupid response surely doesn't help.

And by the way, just because Cal said it in public doesn't mean you should always believe it. Do you really think Cal is just telling his guys to start making shots? No, he's figuring out ways to get guys better looks. He's coaching guys through whatever problem he's noticed the past few games.

You're like that guy you ask after the game about why they lost, and you respond with, "Because they didn't score enough points," or something like that. You're that jackass.
