No one talking about the UHC CEO murder?

I'd be curious to know what the US life expectancy would be without two things that seem to hit America more than most other developed countries: 1. our opioid and drug epidemic and 2. inner city violence and poverty. Not saying we can just fully excuse these, they are problems, and the drug crisis can certainly hit any one of our families... But, something tells me that people living in Vermont and not on Fentanyl are living just fine.

Of course our obesity rates are certainly holding us back. That has to be addressed.
Add in obsesity.

I'm still in shock that he looked so comfortable and not phased by the fact there were bystanders on the sidewalk. Minus the banging on the gun, it looked like a professional hit. I guess we will find out at some point how he knew the time and location to be at to kill the CEO.
This. How would he know exactly where and when the UHC CEO would be walking? Likely inside job/professional hit

Luigi's manifesto:

To the Feds, I'll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn't working with anyone. This was fairly trivial: some elementary social engineering, basic CAD, a lot of patience. The spiral notebook, if present, has some straggling notes and To Do lists that illuminate the gist of it.

My tech is pretty locked down because I work in engineering so probably not much info there. I do apologize for any strife of traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming. A reminder: the US has the #1 most expensive healthcare system in the world, yet we rank roughly #42 in life expectancy. United is the [indecipherable] largest company in the US by market cap, behind only Apple, Google, Walmart. It has grown and grown, but as our life expectancy?

No the reality is, these [indecipherable] have simply gotten too powerful, and they continue to abuse our country for immense profit because the American public has allwed them to get away with it. Obviously the problem is more complex, but I do not have space, and frankly I do not pretend to be the most qualified person to lay out the full argument. But many have illuminated the corruption and greed (e.g.: Rosenthal, Moore), decades ago and the problems simply remain. It is not an issue of awareness at this point, but clearly power games at play. Evidently I am the first to face it with such brutal honesty.

A remarkable amount of intellectual humility for a miscreant who decided that his gripes with a regulated industry justified him becoming a vigilante executioner.

Sounds as if he may have targeted others had he not been caught.

I’m not saying this to absolve the shooter, but you can say this thing x1000 for the murdered CEO too. Every time his company denied a claim for needed medical care following policies he was ultimately responsible for so United could make more money he changed families for the worse. Sometimes people died, sometimes they suffered while they delayed needed care, sometimes they went bankrupt.

I’m really struggling to see why we’re demonizing the murderer (probably rightfully so) but refuse to even acknowledge that Thompson himself has made profit chasing decisions that have killed many more people.

If Thompson broke laws, he should be prosecuted, not killed. How would you like if an insurance company that made a decision you did not like justified the decision by showing that the recipient of the decision had a past that was less than admirable? “Yeah, we denied her healthcare, but did you know she was a thief and a reprobate?”

🤦‍♂️

I don't think I ever said he should have been killed. Nor did I say what he did as CEO was breaking laws (although I believe he was under investigation for insider trading and United is under investigation for fake diagnoses to squeeze more money out of Medicare/Medicaid).

I just think it's curious that killing one person means someone's a monster while killing thousands in the name of profit makes someone a good businessman. Nowhere did I say Thompson deserved to die or that I'm happy he was killed. But I do have zero empathy for him.

I get what you're saying but now do people in government... Look at Fauci alone. How many deaths from aids was Fauci responsible for and he just kept on keeping on. My biggest WTF is how people don't even know anything about the CEO but assume all this evil just because of his job title. I don't know either but maybe he was trying to work on ways to cover as much as possibe without going bankrupt?? Before we cheer a murder I'd like to at least see some emails or public statements of him being the asshole some are labeling him.

Exactly. The CEO isn't making that decision. He's not deciding who gets covered and who doesn't. The board makes more of those decisions than the CEO. He's the face and the scapegoat. Because he's in the crosshairs, he makes millions.

Trails by how much? How does our eating and exercise compare to nearly all first world countries? Honest questions, I don’t know.

Our food is some the most unhealthy food in the world. Stuff that would never be allowed on the shelves in Europe for just one example. Chemicals disguised with flavors and flavor enhancers is not food, but it is to the US FDA.

Drugs and drugs with ingredients that kill people are approved "treatments" here in the US, though in some cases with certain drugs, they are allowed elsewhere.

Exercise is mitigated by lifestyle and food. Energy drinks and processed food. Glyphosate killing people's gut flora and turning our own bodies against us. GMOs designed to survive heavy glyphpsate use and make you MORE hungry and last longer on shelves, with less and less nutrition. Energy drinks that cause heart and adrenal issues that won't surface most often til they are drastic situations.

Don't even get me started on what's in the water. From pharmaceuticals to atrazine, and chems we couldn't legally put in someone's mouth...

The CEO is handing down directives to deny more and more claims to increase profits more each year. And nobody is denying claims, because United is starting to use AI and algorithms to automatically deny them without a person ever seeing it. Ultimately the CEO is responsible for that.

United is the worst in the industry for denying claims. I highly doubt people with United insurance are faking claims or going to fraudulent doctors at rates higher than any other insurer. They doubled their rate of denials for Medicare Advantage claims between 2020 and 2022. There's a whole Senate report detailing what they've done. Are they the only insurer doing this? No. But they're by far the worst.

At the end of the day if a doctor says something is medically necessary, an algorithm or AI shouldn't be the one saying it's not. That's 100% something the CEO can change. He makes millions of dollars every year because his only concern is increasing profits more and more. They made $23 billion in 2023, how much more do they really need? If health insurance is to have a place in our healthcare system it's purpose should be to serve the patient, not to make more and more money each year.

And before anyone makes the argument insurance companies keep costs down by denying unnecessary care, United has been sued by the DOJ on multiple occasions for faking diagnosis and creating fake patient information to get more money out of Medicare claims. Insurance companies don't actually care about keeping costs down, they just want an ever increasing amount of profit. And if people die or go bankrupt due to denied claims to get that profit they couldn't care less.

Regardless of what ANYONE else does in this world, stalking and killing a person in cold blood makes you a monster.

I never said it didn't. It feels like anyone who points out the health insurance industry has blood on their hands as is being accused of celebrating the killing. It would just be cool if we can finally admit killing in the name of profit is also monstrous. But I will say I can understand the motivations of someone who kills because they're fed up with an unjust system or were wronged in some way a million times more than I do someone who kills in order to make more money because they feel $23 billion isn't enough for some reason.

You can only kick a dog so many times before it bites back. The dog finally bit back. Hopefully the health insurance industry looks inward a bit before the dog bites again.

That “dog” was evil and from a wealthy family and thought he could get away with murder. You keep saying you condemn the murder, but then attempt to justify the evil ugly act by claiming it is somehow understandable that it happened.

It was just a matter of time until someone went ballistic on Vegas and made the power structure in that town pay. Right? We condemn the mass murder, but it was just a matter of time.

It was just a matter of time before someone got tired of kids picking on kids. Who is surprised that someone took a bunch of guns and shot up that school? It’s awful, but understandable.

It was just a matter of time before someone started to assassinate cops. Who didn’t see that happening? Can only kick a dog so much.

It was just a matter of time before someone tried to kill a Supreme Court Justice or shoot Republican congresspeople.

It was just a matter of time before someone tried to kill the president.

It was just a matter of time before all of the whacked ugly narratives made some loon take action.

Sure. We hate it, but hopefully they start to make changes. Right.

Murder is bad. Cheering or approving murder also bad.

Healthcare is messed up and that goes beyond insurance companies. We don’t actually have healthcare; we have illness management. There aren’t enough primary care doctors and it seems like many people would not utilize them even if they were in abundance. The primary care physicians are stretched so thin that they can’t properly do there job the way it should be done. This leads to worse overall health that necessitates more expensive treatments.
Switching to single payer won’t fix that problem. Possibly it could make some other things better, but it’s just as likely to make those things worse. Either way, until we actually shift to “healthcare “ from “illness management “, we are just re-arranging the deck chairs on the titanic.
Don’t shoot me for saying that please.

But if you are going to say "ultimately the ceo is responsible" then shouldn't you take the next logical step and say... "obamacare/the government are responsible for that"? I just don't like picking out a guy and cheering his death when people don't seem to know a single thing about him.

Maybe in a week or 2 something comes out and I'll agree with you but right now there is a wife and a child who lost their husband and father... Empathy is gone in this country.

Every decision made in life has a chance of death. If you can prove he "wanted" people to die then I'm with the people cheering. If he was just trying to make the best out of bad situation then he's not any worse then half the people on this board.

It's night and day.

I'm European. I say that because I have lifelong experience living here and there. Europeans' lives are completely different: diet is completely different, primarily because eat at home vs eat out, and they walk daily, not drive everywhere.

This "argument" that we spend more yet have worse outcomes is obtuse. It's like saying we spend more on our cars but get worse gas mileage than Europeans so therefore have worse cars.

You can only kick a dog so many times before it bites back. The dog finally bit back. Hopefully the health insurance industry looks inward a bit before the dog bites again.

So the healthcare industry needs to make changes so people don't get murdered?

What an imbecilic statement.

The more we learn about Luigi, it looks more and more like he didn't have any specific gripe with Thompson or UHC, or even health insurance companies in general. Seems like an angry at the modern world guy who was probably suffering from some mental illness.

He was just a Liberal lunatic that has had his head completely diluted by Liberal rhettoric. We have a whole new generation coming up that has been brainwashed into believing they can do whatever they want and it's OK because they are on the right side of Democracy (Laughable). Liberalism is a complete sh*t stain on society.

Please explain this response.

Okay.

This idea that murder may be okay if we demonize the victim enough is arbitrary. George Floyd did some really ugly criminal acts in his life and abused others. Why should people have “empathy” for Floyd if they don’t have empathy for a CEO they know very very little about? Does Floyd have to be a terrorist for you to think murder is somehow okay?

Terrorist? Please explain your response.

If you are talking self-defense or defense of others when no other act will save lives, I do not think that is murder. If you are talking about a military action in an unconventional war against terror, again not the same. But, if you are talking about secretly planning and murdering a terrorist and justifying your act when the terrorist could be arrested, George Floyd is on that slope.

New bipartisan bill that I hope passes. Did you know insurance companies (UHC included) owned most pharmacies and would charge you more if you got your medicine at another pharmacy they didn’t own? Crazy and scary stuff. Hopefully they don’t bribe the politicians to veto this bill.

For all her faults, at least Lina Kahn started to take up this fight. The PBMs and the monopolistic behavior are killing independent pharmacies.

Is the only way he was caught was him showing his face when asked to at the hostel? If so, he would have completed the perfect murder. There will be copycats or attempted ones.

I ain't no liberal, but even Ben Shapiro said that a lot of Luigi's posts on social media were center-right. I have not seen the reddit stuff. He seemed to lose it in the last 6 months.

He seemed to be anti-woke. But, how would you guess his crazy support falls? Liberal or conservative?
