Cat Balou sugested in another thread that although Newman is the arguably best offensive guard of the past decade and on a par with Wall and Rose as far as being the best guard that Cal has ever coached, Crystal Ball seems to have him headed toward Kansas and not UK, with Brown headed toward UK and not Kansas. Can someone fill me in on this, because the overall tone on this board in recent weeks is that Newman is ours to lose and only the Harrisons returning would likely cause that to happen. Where do things appear to stand right now as far as our prospects of landing Malik are concerned?

Newman is coming to UK . Has been for 3 years and will . Well as long as the twins leave and they are leaving so it is a moot point . They wanted to leave bad last year but wanted to try to improve their stock and win a title with their friends like Dakari and Poy . Zimmerman is in the same boat . Will be a Cat just waiting for guys to go pro. Brown is more up in the air .I think we lead but i think he might get swayed by Addias and go to UCLA . I don't think KU is much of a threat.

If you are expecting him to be as good as Wall or Rose you are in for a big surprise. Great player but he isn't that caliber of a recruit.

I REALLY hope we get Newman. Not only is he a great player, but seems like a great kid as well. The kind of person you want representing BBN.

I forget the day or the exact phrasing

But on the KSR Radio show the other day, Jones said we'd either get the Harrison twins back or get Newman. After all of his talk about a mysterious tidbit of good recruiting news--I'm going to assume he finally broke down and gave us something.

Let's look at this logically, OP.

First of all, I've said all along that the twins are gone this year even if they go straight to the D-league or to Europe. The big question mark is Booker.

If Booker comes back, our PG/2G/SF are Ulis, Booker, Briscoe, Hawkins, and a VASTLY under-rated Matthews. You could argue that Poy and Willis are SFs, but the truth is both are 4s.

What's missing here? That's a damned good guard core, but we have no SF. If we could add Brown to that lineup, we are done. We don't need anyone else. If we miss on Brown, we could add Newman and play a 3 guard lineup, and if Booker goes pro, we really need Brown AND Newman.

Meanwhile at Kansas, I think Self has given up on Selden. He has Mason and Graham at the PG position, but needs the elite scoring combo guard that Selden was supposed to be - he doesn't need a SF (Brown).

I think Kansas is all in on signing Diallo or Maker and Newman to finish out their year.

I think we add Zimm or Maker, Brown, and Swanigan. All in for Newman if Booker leaves, which I think is a low risk. I think Booker will stick around for at least 2 years to play with his buddy Ulis.

In that case, I hope we don't get Newman.

So basically he's guaranteeing Newman will be a wildcat next season.

Yes exactamundo

Newman is not on the same level,as wall, and rose. Both of them are all, stars in the NBA and a former mvp and a future possible mvp.

I'll be pretty happy with either

Assuming the Twins leave, we have a great chance of getting one out of Brown and Newman.

We have a decent chance of getting both.

In don't think either of the Harrisons staying for a junior season is even a remote possibility. Consequently, I think that is nothing to be concerned about with respect to whether we get Newman.

Actually IMO he is but obviously it all subjective. I think Newman will be an allstar for a long time in the NBA . he is the best SG to come out of HS in a while though like Step Curry and others he will probably play PG in the NBA since he is only 6'3 or 6'4.

I understand he is good. But rose and wall were even talked about on another level. They were program changers. I see newman as a notch below like, tyreke Evans.

Newman is more Austin Rivers Brandon Knight than Wall or Rose. If nothing else, he just doesn't have the measurables or out of this world athleticism that both j wall and rose had.

I agree with the Newman/Brandon Knight comparison as far as talent/impact go. That is certainly nothing to scoff at. Knight was a hell of a player, but not quite the Rose/Wall caliber.

As far as Brown, I think a decent comparison as far as talent/impact goes would be similar to James Young. Not a definite NBA all star, but an EXTREMELY high level college player & future solid NBA starter.

Some people have a higher opinion of Brown, but I personally have not seen it yet in the few games I have watched him play.

If those comparisons are somewhat accurate, I would be really happy to have both at UK next season!

wow,,you might want to go watch him play..He is better than the twins for sure and a deadeye 3pt shooter ....I cant wait to see the preseason # 1
Ulis
Newman
Booker
Skal
Maker

Newman is the REAL deal and has a lot of different ways to score

Newman is in the same league as Wall and Rose for sure. He isn't quite as athletic but he's more skilled than both. He's a more athletic, little more skilled Brandon Knight. I was the one that said he's the best SG in 10+ years and would rival Wall and Rose as Cal's best guard. The ones denying this are ones that haven't seen him play in person. He's absolutely amazing. His nickname defines him perfectly "The Machine."

He's one of the best offensive players I've ever seen at any level of basketball. Like Cane said, he will be an Allstar in the league many years.

Seems like a win-win.

If Newman doesn't come, it likely means the twins return for their junior year at Kentucky.

If Newman comes, it likely means the twins left and were able to pursue their professional basketball careers.

I like the sound of both. For the sake of my appreciation for all three of these young men, I'll refrain from openly declaring which option I'd prefer the most.

Ulis, Booker and Newman would be an amazing combination of offense. Our offensive issues in the backcourt would be solved for sure. The great thing is that we will have at least Lee and Skal blocking shots as well!

Wow some great posters underrating Newman badly.

Newman in my opinion is the best in class and I think will end up a fan favorite and NBA All star.

Any comparison to the twins so way, way off the mark. Knight is closer but in all honestly he has a much higher ceiling.

Apparently some of you need to actually witness Malik Newman play. He's not just an offensive player either. The kid can defend as well and will be a great defensive player when all is said and done. Click on the Team USA game and watch him. His mid-range game alone is NBA ready. If UK can pull off Newman and Maker it's really on like Donkey Kong.
