Mingione Signs Contract Extension
Amendment extends Mingione through 2022; two-year agreements for assistants

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Nick Mingione has signed a contract extension that will keep him as Kentucky baseball head coach through the end of the 2022 season, Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart announced on Friday.

“The progress our program has made in one year under Nick’s leadership is outstanding,” Barnhart said. “We are committed to making Kentucky baseball a consistent winner both in the Southeastern Conference and on a national level and he is the coach to make that happen. We are excited to have Nick and his family in Lexington for a long time.”

The 2017 SEC Coach of the Year and Perfect Game/Rawlings National Coach of the Year, Mingione completed his first year as UK head coach in June, leading the Wildcats to their first-ever trip to Super Regionals. UK won 43 games overall in 2017 and 19 in SEC play – the second most in school history – after being picked in the bottom half of the league in the preseason. Those 43 wins are also the most for a first-year UK head coach.

Following the season, eight Wildcats were chosen in the MLB Draft, including a school-record six in the first 10 rounds. UK also had team grade-point averages of 3.356 and 3.228 in the fall 2016 and spring 2017 semesters, respectively.

UK’s two assistants – Jim Belanger and Roland Fanning – have also agreed in principle to new two-year deals to keep Mingione’s coaching staff intact.

"I'm very appreciative of the commitment Mitch Barnhart, President (Eli) Capilouto and the University of Kentucky have shown to our baseball program," Mingione said. "My wife and I love Lexington and could not be more excited about being a part of this university and community. I'm also thrilled the rest of the coaching staff is being rewarded for their remarkable efforts in our first season here."

The amendment adds one year to Mingione’s contract, which he originally signed in June 2016 when he was hired as head coach. Mingione’s total base compensation (base salary plus broadcasting and endorsements) will be $575,000 ($400,000 in base salary plus $175,000 in broadcasting and endorsements) for each of the next five years. That represents an increase of $150,000 for 2017-18, $100,000 for 2018-19, and $50,000 for 2019-20 and no increase for 2020-21.

The amendment also outlines new incentive compensation for Mingione. He will receive $25,000 in each year UK reaches the NCAA Tournament, $100,000 in each year UK reaches Super Regionals, $150,000 in each year UK reaches the College World Series, and $200,000 if UK wins the national championship. Mingione will receive $2,500 in each year the baseball team achieves an Academic Progress Rate of .985 or better. These incentive payments are cumulative.

Mingione’s broadcasting and endorsement compensation also stands to increase each year based on incentive compensation. Broadcasting and endorsement compensation will increase by 33 percent of the previous year’s cumulative earned incentive payment, with annual increases capped at $100,000.

Mingione will owe the university a buyout payment if he elects to terminate the agreement. The buyout starts at $1 million if he terminates the agreement on or prior to July 1, 2018 and decreases by $200,000 in each subsequent year.

I think he will stay for quite a while. It seems to me that most baseball coaches get settled into a school and they stay there unless their alumnus calls them like happened to Cohen. Mingione is an alumni of Embry-Riddle, I don't think that he's going to be running back to them after a successful stint at Kentucky. So, I think that he'll be here as long as Kentucky wants him, especially now with the fact that we're getting a new baseball stadium and his recruiting should only continue to be even more successful. Here is to hoping he puts together another amazing record-breaking year in 2018!!

CB3...to bad you couldn't have been there with my friends and I at all the regional games...it was fun!!
I would have loved to have been there. Maybe they'll recreate the experience this year and I'll be able to make it.
