Mike Gundy

I think all of you are mistaken that other P4 schools wouldn’t take Stoops. His entire resume says he deserves a chance at another place. We are one year away from A&M coming within a whisker of taking him. It’s not like schools haven’t taken coaches in the past after a flameout. Will Muschamp says hello. Ron Zook went from getting fired at Florida to take the Illinois job. It’s not unheard of.

And both of those coaches were mediocre, and I’m being gracious, at their next jobs, Stoops makes 9 million a year, he’s a $3-4 million coach. Nobody is going to come close to paying him what he’s making now.

Gundy has done really well at OSU. Wonder if things have gotten stale there? It seems like the P4 programs have a max shelf life between 10-15 years. Even Saban was burnt out after 15 years.
I was always surprised he wasn’t pursued more heavily by bigger schools. Gundy in his prime would have killed it at a place like LSU.

I’m not saying he’s gonna go somewhere else and suddenly take them to the playoffs. Just saying it’s not unheard of and happens quite a bit in all sports. Tubby left UK for Minnesota. Cal for Arkansas. What was Gene Chizik’s record before Auburn hired him back in the day. How many chances has Lane Kiffin gotten? Satterfield moved from Louisville to Cincy before he was about to lose his fan base. If Stoops pursued another job he could land one

Believe me, I wish it would happen, I just don’t see it and it’s just wishful thinking amongst fans. I’d love to eat me some crow on this one. With the amount of coaching talent and some of the up and comers out there, an AD would have to be crazy to make that hire. His $9 million salary alone will keep ADs from calling. But let’s just say he took less of a salary. As an AD, would you even pay $6-7 million for him? I doubt it. He’s probably more in the $3-4 million range and he wouldn’t take that kinda pay cut.

I realize I’m probably too sour on Stoops at the moment, but based on his overall trajectory, I can’t see any halfway decent P5 coming for him. Maybe Iowa on historical connection alone, but even then, would that really ignite their fanbase at all? Some random place like a Purdue type or that level of program, possibly? Stylistically, he just doesn’t seem like a good fit very many places outside a cold, disgusting November game in front of 30k minimally enthused fans of a B10 bottom-dweller while battling for bowl eligibility. Certainly nothing heading south or in a conference generally known for actually crossing the goal line with the ball from time to time.

UCF is now open. I wonder if there’s any interest there? I’m not sure Stoops would do it since it puts him further from his kids.

I know it’s not happening too. If you see my posts in other threads, I’m well aware we’re likely stuck with Stoops for at least one more year. My whole point in all of this debate is that if he wanted out and was willing to take a pay cut for that to happen, he could land another P4 job if the right fit were to come open. He’s got enough money now that he doesn’t have to worry about his or his kids futures. Taking a cut from $9 mil to $6 mil isn’t going to threaten his future livelihood. He also has his side gigs too.

You know, a lot of this downturn coincided with his getting divorced. Not a lot is known on how or why that went down, so I have to wonder what skeletons are in his closet haunting him that the public isn’t aware of. Makes you wonder.

There is a lot better coaches in the 3 million range out there. With his offense, schools are not going to see an uptick in ticket sales. I don't know what A&M was thinking. Since we vacated wins one season, Stoops has just finished better than 7-6 two times in his twelve years. What program would be okay with those results outside of the very bottom tier of the P4 schools?

Mike Gundy would be owed $25 million if fired. His contract also includes a provision that it automatically resets to a 5 year contract every Jan 1st unless either party objects. These contracts are nuts lol
5 year contracts should be the max @ KY. That way the buyout would 2-3 years of salary.
