Mentalist Oz Perlman tries to predict NCAA champion with riddle

1975 - UCLA 92 UK 85
1980 - UofL 59 UCLA 54
1984 - Georgetown 84 Houston 75
1985 - Villanova 66 Georgetown 64
2003 - Syracuse 81 Kansas 78
2007 - Florida 84 Ohio State 75

Winners
58 UK
67 UCLA
87 IU
04 UConn
05 UNC

Anyone see a trend according to the riddle?

Whole riddle, as written:

"Wisconsin, Florida, Baylor, South Carolina,
Gonzaga, West Virginia, Xavier & Arizona
will battle East and West,
who looks exceptional to you?

Kansas, Purdue, Oregon, Michigan,
UNC, Butler, UCLA & Kentucky.
South By and Large likelier than midwest,
past scores often predict the future,
so go back and look at the finals
of 1975, 1980, 1984, 1985, 2003, & 2007
and also the teams that won in
1958, 1967, 1987, 2004, & 2005.
Focus on finding out the patterns!"

Well, he would have gotten the Patriots wrong if not for the Falcons' coaching staff screwing the pooch the whole 4th quarter. General Tom made em pay though !!

58 UK
67 UCLA
87 IU
04 UConn
05 UNC

There is a trend based on the winners.
UK
UCLA
UNC
UK
UNC
UCLA

Or using numerology it could benefit cheaters
58. 5+8 = 13
67. 6+7= 13
Both bad luck

05. 0+5=5 and cheaters are 5th on the list

Who the hell knows like someone said it could be rigged for multiple outcomes

He listed UNC and UCLA as having 3 titles. UK only has two. The pattern I see, is that he is picking UK to win, thus all 3 teams have 3 NC's during the years listed.

I looked at the records of the teams that won in the years that he said to look at the finals:

75: (28-3)UCLA UK 92-85 [7]
80: (33-3)UL UCLA 59-54 [5]
84: (34-3)Gtown Houston 84-75 [9]
85: (25-10)Nova Gtown 84-75 [9]
03: (30-5)Cuse KU 81-78 [3]
07:(35-5)UF OSU 84-75 [9]

35-5
would be our record if we win out.

Margin of victory the number 9 stands out. It would be our 9th.

Of course this thing will be spun one of 16 different ways after the tournament.

I believe he will spin it like he knew all along, but there seems to be more for UCLA and UK in the numbers listed above, I don't know any significance of 1980 for UK, UCLA lost to UL. Why go back to 1958 for UK if it's not UK? there's 9 years between 58 and 67, #9? UK was in final four in 1984, The score was 84-75, UCLA won it in 75. 1985 Villanova beat Georgetown in Rupp Arena. 1967 UCLA won it in Louisville KY over Dayton. 87 IU with Alford as someone else already pointed out. 2003 score 81-78, UK won in 1978. 2007 score 84-75, UK was in final 4 both years but didn't win, UCLA won in 75. If he's picking winner from south I don't see how he spins it other than UK or UCLA but if UNC wins, I'm sure he will spin it some way.
eh, I had some free time. [winking]

Many teams left in the tournament that have ever made any noise in college basketball won or lost in one or more of those years he uses to set his 'pattern.'

My theory would be that he'll be able to say after the fact that there was a pattern pointing to one team when actually he has included enough numbers that you could come up with a plausible pattern for several team.

For example, if Kentucky wins, he'll say, "See -- they won it all in 1958, which was on my list! They played UCLA in the final four in 1975 - and again this year -- as my list predicted!. They made the final four in 1984 and played Georgetown -- from the Big East - same conference as Butler...and so on.

I'm sure it is more complicated than that -- But there is probably some number sequence that he worked out in advance that, in retrospect, will appear to point to whoever wins. In fact, with enough work, you could figure out a sequence pointing to any of the teams.
It will be more complicated than that, but you're right. He doesn't know who will win. He's simply given a sufficiently vague riddle that he will be able to find a post hoc justification for how he knew.

75-84 seems to come up a lot in the numbers. I don't know. Wasted too much time trying to guess what a fortune teller is saying.

Isn't 84 our average per game?
And we lost to UCLA in 75
And were awful in 84.
But when UCLA scores 75 or less they lose? ( to lazy to look up)

all of the winners have a "U" in the title.

All too easy ...

Nothing to do with the riddle, but UK was National Champion in 58',78',98' and another 20 years would be 2018,not counting the 48',49',51',96',and 2012 Titles
