What is everyone's take on the game last night, thoughts on overall talent or individual players?

Thoughts on a few players

Simmons - A very skilled player, will be a factor in the SEC from day 1 of conference play

Briscoe - Good basketball IQ,has the size to hold his own in college, when he gets in a little better shape he will be ready togive us valuable minutes

Brown - Whereever he goes he can play from day 1,one of the best combinations of size and skill on the court

Diallo - Better than I expected, plays hard,a few more skills than I thought I would see at this point

Newman - expected to see something more from him,he is a god player no doubt but I thought he would do things to seperate himself from others on the floor

Zimmerman - He runs the floor well, needs strength,I just don't see what puts him on par with some of the other players in this class

Ingram - Doesn't look like a player but he is,plays around the rim better than it seems he would be able to do,quick off his feet.

Wish Skal and Matthews could have been in the mix but we will see them later.I left out several players ,hope others have thoughts on them.I don't think this group is as polished as some in the past.

I watched most of the game, and wasn't overly impressed by anyone in particular, but that probably has to do with the talent we've seen come here is really special, and I need to remind myself these kids are still in high school. Simmons appeared to have the strongest game. I think in the years since Wall came here we're seeing kids trying to be as flashy, and trying to leapfrog the fundamentals. Lot of airballs (nervousness, no doubt), but I can't say any of those kids' games last night lept out as "special". Good? Yes. But I didn't see another Davis, Cousins or Wall on the floor. Again, may just be that I'm spoiled with what Cal has been able to accomplish. Great problem to have.

This years lack of talent and the extreme poor play ( even by McD game standards ) caused me to tune out at halftime.

I agree with you I was not impressed with the game last night. There were some good players on the floor but in an all star game it is hard to see talent as everyone wants the ball and they do not play as a team.

Wasn't too overly impressed by the class but I did like the way diallo played and briscoe looks skilled with the ball

I have made it a point to go to all the games close to me this here where our recruits have played along with taking advantage of every oppurtunity they play on TV and online and let me say this about the guys we are after

- Newman - he didn't do much last night but he is the best guard in this class and it isn't close . Kid can do everything and damn well. has the ability to shoot 45% from 3 , 75% from the line and go for 40 in college on any night ( won't at UK due to talent but could ) . He will be a Cat.

- Diallo - as i have said in other threads don't be fooled by that game Diallo is a notch below the guys we have offered like Zimmerman and Maker. He looks lost alot of time in the half court game but in an up and down alley ooping and dunking fest that is the Mcd's game he can shine . If we lose Dakari as well i would love to offer him .

- Brown - is a physical freak who can run , jump , dunk and could be taught to be a D specialist but he can't shoot and he can't make free throws with any regularity. In that way i have never been wild about him as i want my guys at worst to be able to make shots with MKG regularity as while his shot was ugly it went in a decent amount of time. my veiw isn't going to be popular with everyone but if i could choose i would take Ingram for what we need.

Ingram- like i said i like him more for college then Brown although in 5 years Brown could be a top 5 player in the league if he can learn to shoot ( Lebron couldn' t really shoot when he came into the league either) .Ingram can drain 3's , drive and finish . what is not to like. I get the feeling we have a better shot then most think.

Briscoe - wow this kid is special. Can do it all and does it with a smile always. Can be molded into a D stopper and makes shots , drives ect.

Zimmerman - love watching this kid always . Like Briscoe always plays smiling . Can shoot from 15 , can throw down with the best of them . has some moves down low but could use time with Kenny Payne . Just is going to be a beast for someone next year. Is another kid who loves to get up and down.

Bryant - isn't on the same level skill wise as guys like Zimmerman, Skal or Maker but boy is he a hoss . Just all muscle strength . Throws it down with authority and isn't a plodder . could be a great player by year 2.

Newman - he didn't do much last night but he is the best guard in this class and it isn't close

He definitely is. Was a tad surprised he was close to invisible last night.

The 2015 McDonald's All-American Game.

Just a question that kind of struck me last night... why is it that in the Under Armour and Army All American football games one of the biggest deals in the game is the players committing on air, but they never do this at the McDonald's All American game? It would seem to me that if they started this then more people would tune in to see where these kids are going to go and stuff like that. I understand that it is before a lot of people put their name into the draft, but I would imagine that someone over the years would want to announce their commitment in front of a national television audience on the biggest high school basketball stage.

he didn't take a single good shot that I recall. Everything was either forced, too early as soon as he crossed half court, or over 2-3 defenders. He looked awful in general last night... very much looked like a ball hog (as his reputation goes). I get that he can get hot and make a lot of shots, but last night was a little over the top forcing the issue.
actually he had like 4 really good passes last night although i think 2 of them were fumbled . I have never thought he was a ball hog at all as he actually IMO trys to hard to pass the ball and prove he is a pg imo at times. If there is a complaint about his game it is that - he isn't selfish enough . At least the 8-10 times i have seen him in the last 16 months. Though in the last 5 minutes of games he can take over like no one else. But when people think of guys like that they assume they are ball hogs when Newman imo is like Brandon Knight - has the rep of a ball hog without warrent .

I'd read/heard all along that he's a ball hog that forces a lot. Then the last few days--the reports out of practice were that he was sharing the ball and setting others up. Then the game comes and every shot was closely contested or fired from a pull up on the run.

I know, I know, don't judge a guy off an All-Star game. But if he had already commited to MSU or Kansas, everyone would be blasting him, talking about how he's a cancer and yada yada. The second he does, I'm sure this game will be brought up. But, still a good chance he winds up here, and no one ever says a word.

The small amount of the game I saw left me unimpressed. I agree that Simmons is a special talent and will make an immediate impact for LSU. It's too bad Johnny Jones can't coach his way out of a wet paper bad. Seriously, how could a team as talented as that not be any better than they were this season? Simmons will be good but he's not the same talent as Mickey or Martin were this season. By the way, both those guys are gone now. Mickey has announced he's gone too.

But back to the McD's game, it seems the talent is down from last season to me. I think these things run in cycles, and this year is just not a great year for high impact freshmen. Last year was HUGE, maybe that's why I'm not impressed.

Will, I covered Lebron in HS, kid could shoot. almost 40% on 3's, over 50% from field and around 70% at FT line. Also hit all big time free throws it seems. Of course none of these kids are remotely close to James, in fact I see this as a rather down year for talent. Hope we have some surprise returnees.

Interesting analysis otherwise, thanks.

From an overall standpoint it seems that most everyone in this thread had the same reaction to what they saw.even most of the interviews were a little too "all about me" for my liking.Maybe the next all star game will give us a different view of the impact players for next season.

Briscoe seems like he will be a good fit,Swanigan wasn't talked about much here but he seems to be a solid post player.

I've seen a lot of these games over the years, and that one was one of the worst ever.

I don't see how Newman will fit on next seasons roster. Ulis will start at the point, Briscoe will likely be the starting 2 guard. ( Unless Booker returns, which I'm not expecting)

Newman will want to start anywhere he goes. His playing style + physical measurements simply don't fit with our personnel.

People's expectations of him were too high. I've read people call him the best guard since John Wall.

Newman starts from day 1 wherever he goes. If Briscoe and Newman are on the same team, Briscoe doesn't start unless Cal goes with a 3 guard set.
Agreed. Malik Newman is a sure fire can't miss prospect. Go watch him in the U17 World championship. Buttery smooth jumper, sick handles, creates his own shot, great court awareness, very capable defender. This guy would have probably taken the starter spot for Aaron Harrison this year. I've seen him roughly 10 times counting those games. He's the real deal.

That would be interesting. Undersized, but a lot of creators.

Newman does a lot of cool things, but I'm just all-in on Jaylen Brown. With Brandon ingram trailing him.

We seem set at the guard spots. Getting a SF with the skillets the two players above posses is what UK needs next season.

Yeah i already know - Adidas.

I'm still holding out hope.

I look for the Jordan Brand all-star game to be much better played, also all 3 of our commits are playing in that game.
