Maryland Loses Starting SG for Season

This leaves them with a great starting 5, but absolutely no bench. One of the most overrated teams in recent memory.

Tough for any team to lose a starter. Here's hoping we can stay healthy after losing WCS then Poythress the last two seasons.

It's curious they're getting so much love when they weren't all that great last year and have a coach who hasn't proven himself to be anything more than mediocre.

They were beat in the R32 by a West Virginia squad we beat by 100.

Maryland this year (and you can quote me on this) will be eerily similar to Oklahoma State 2 years ago.

Just like OSU, Maryland has a star PG returning (Trimble=Marcus Smart)

They have a great starting 5, but basically no bench.

Both have/had unproven coaches.

Both were 4/5 seeds the previous year and lost in the 2nd round.

That OSU team started preseason top-5 IIRC, and finished with a 1st round tourney loss as a 9 seed.

That is who this Maryland team STRONGLY reminds me of.

All teams with good, experienced players are getting a lot of love this year because nobody is seen as having a great, young team. Even us. Our guys are getting a lot of credit and we are highly ranked, but this class is not seen as being nearly as good as last year's.

wowwwww that is really bad news for them. Wiley is a great player, he gets overshadowed by Trimble who is more flashy.

I thought Sulaimon would put Wiley on the bench, big loss for them though. Not much quality depth for Maryland now.

Tough news for the Terps. Never wanna see a player get injured. Dion Wiley out for year with torn meniscus. Probably means Sulaimon will start for them.

Wiley was to have started the exhibition game, but I don't think Maryland fans thought he would be the primary SG. Sulaimon supposedly volunteered to come off the bench, and we'll see if that remains the case (with 6-7 Nickens available at that position too).

Depth-wise, the Terps are in very good shape for big men, and I suspect we'll be fine on the perimeter too. Perhaps we'll see you in Houston. In the meantime, I hope you beat the Dookies on the 17th.

To be fair, we would have beaten any team in the country by 100 that day. I do always laugh when experienced teams are ranked highly preseason just because they return a bunch of players from a mediocre team. I will believe UNC is elite when I see it. Tokoto was their best player and none of their freshmen will come close to replacing his production.

Pinson should be better than Tokoto. If he's doesn't at least match his production I agree UNC is overrated, but that probably isn't the case.

With Carter and Stone inside, they will be tough in the halfcourt.

If we play them, we will press and try to speed up the game and wear those two bigs out. We could run them out of the gym if we can force it into a track meet.

They, on the other hand, will try to slow it down and pound us inside. They have the muscle to give us fits inside.

Has to be more than just torn meniscus. Doesn't seem like that would put him out for the entire year. You can actually still play with a torn meniscus. I've torn mine before and my lil brother completely to his his during the football playoffs in high school and finished out the year before having surgery. Now, I'm no doctor but just everything I've ever known about a meniscus injury tells me he could be back midway through the year at least. I guess it could depend on which meniscus he tore too. Just seems odd though. Hate it for the kid if true.

Edit: Guess I could read the article before posting. Lol. Looks like he had it repaired instead of removed which would indicate a partial tear in the meniscus. That injury is kinda odd. Ortho told me that a complete tear is usually better for the athlete with a shorter recovery. Partial tear means they can fix it and usually advise surgery immediately rather than waiting, which is possible with a complete tear.

It's because they return a bunch of players and add some talented pieces to a team that was given a 4 seed. In reality, they were overrated last season due to an inflated record built on a crazy number of wins in close games.
