Kentucky state box score

Willis led team in assists with 5 and tied Skal for second in rebounding with 9. Zero TOs. Love it.

I like to see Humphries's efficiency -- 7 pts, 3-4 shooting, 3 rb (2 offensive), a block and an assist. Not bad for seven minutes of play.

Thanks for posting that link! I did't see the game so that was a good way for me to see who did what.

Notables:
Murray, 7 for 7 free throws. NICE
Skal with 22 in the second half
Willis the assists leader
Lee leads with 11 rebounds
Charles Mathews top 5 scoring

I can see Mathews playing a HUGE role on this team. He is fast, slasher, athletic as hell, and most important he is a shut shown defender like Liggins was, and can guard 4 positions

The outside shooting will be fine if the majority of the looks are from Murray and Ulis. Briscoe, Poythress, Matthews, Willis and Mulder might combine for some looks, but I'm not at all worried.

The way this team can drive and move the ball, the open threes will come.

The rotation is coming together.

Main rotation:
G Ulis- lock.
G Briscoe- lock.
G Murray- lock.
F Poythress(or Lee- doesn't matter which starts, IMHO)- lock.
F Labissiere- lock.
6 Lee(or Poythress)- first big off the bench.
7 Matthews- first guard off the bench.

Reserves:
8 Willis- looking like he could earn some minutes.
9 Humphries- will get limited minutes behind the three main bigs.
10 Hawkins- once healthy he will get a few minutes per game.
11 Mulder- will be tough to get into the rotation with the way Matthews and Willis are playing.
12 Floreal- spot duty.
13 David- victory cigar.

Pretty much exactly how I see it as well. Before watching the first two exhibitions, I would never have thought that Willis would actually be earning some minutes this year, but it really looks like he may.

looking at that stat, one of the most interesting point is Alex's stat.

It's his 38 +/- in 17 minutes is insane. Basically saying every minute, UK increased lead by 2 points.

It just shows you what kind of player he is, and how he simply adds to the team. With his shooting going so well, he's going to be amazing player this year!

I really like the point u r making here. When Alex played last year UK was playing at an incredible historic level of defense. Someone please correct me, but I wanna say UK was holding opponents to under 25% fg for entire games. It may have been closer to 20%. Can u imagine if he could have stayed healthy? If UK could play to its early season average on defense, they could effectively 3 out of 4 possessions off on offense and still win comfortably! Can u imagine? Poythress is a great help defender and shot blocker. I agree with cal ! Alex is the X factor! To top it all off, he is a wonderful young man and outstanding student.

I don't remember the team FG%, but i believe SI did an article that people who shot against Poythress shot only around 17%. It was insane number that basically shut the player down. He was our best transition defense.

Yes definitely. Alex is the x-factor for this team. He's the muscle we must have. He's the freak athlete on the inside that can make plays others can't make. He's the guy who can erase mistakes. He's the guy who can crush opponents' will to win by making a dynamic play.

And I also agree that losing Alex last season affected the defense more than any of us cared to admit at the time.

Bottom line for this year... if we have a 100% Poythress, this team is a legit title contender, but an uncertain and disappearing Alex makes thus team go from great to just good. We're a top 5 team with Alex at 100% and playing the way we know he can. We're probably not top 10 without him. So the best news so far is that Alex appears to be very close to back to 100% physically and the mental side seems to be moving in their right direction as well.
