With expansion to 16 teams, or is it 18? No matter, Kentucky should explore leaving the conference. The addition of Texas and Oklahoma only served to kick us on down the ladder. Look at our schedule in 2024. Look at the upcoming 2025 schedule. There is no way in hell we can compete to even finished as high as 12th. We should leave the conference and create our own basketball and football schedule just like Notre Dame. It’s a pipe dream to think we will ever compete in football for the SEC Championship.

Another point I want to make. Looking at the level of athlete we are recruiting in the portal, is CMS intentionally taking the program back to the 2012 level before he leaves? It’s like he is intentionally tearing down what he built, returning the program to the basement of the SEC. We are bringing in guys from FCS schools and lower.

More than that gun is smokin...

We could compete, CMS proved that plenty of seasons but we need a set of coaches and an administration who will put football success at the highest levels. We need consistency again and a style that players wanna play in. It’s the SEC we can still recruit to that. We can get depth pieces other schools need for certain. Steal some diamond in the rough players. Plenty out there with great scouting.

it would take a fool to walk away from SEC money

How are we going to replace the SEC money? The answer is. We can't!

Kentucky is a charter member and is not going anywhere. We are the flagship program in basketball and respectable in football. Even though we are not going bowling in football, we will still get millions shared among the schools that do. Kentucky has been a part of that revenue the last 5 years. The conference got tougher for every team, not just us, it is what it is.

Yeah it’s drastic to leave the conference just because the AD makes bad contract decisions and is slow to adapt and our coach may not be able to adapt at all. Nobody in the department would be for it. Salaries would fall some with the revenue drop.

Agreed! Look at the fb schedule that Belichick inherits at NC! Even UK could go9-3, 10-2 with that joke!

Curious- what’s the shared revenue of the ACC teams. If the SEC is $50 mil/ team does the ACC get anywhere around that figure?
Has All the $$$ we’ve been getting from SEC helped us in football the last 3 years?
I’d just like to win and maybe sniff the 12 team playoff..

Makes sense …. Lose all those millions of dollars just so we can win football games in a conference no would respect lol….

Wtf... The only reason we've gotten the recruits and transfers who got us to 10 win seasons is being in the SEC.
....

I don't get it.

They whined that we'd never have 9 or 10 win seasons under Stoops.
Then they whined when we won 10 that we somehow "blew it" because we didnt win more.
Then one day, after the first 10 win season when we missed our chance to win the East, Stoops winning 10 was a fluke.
Then we win 10 again and people are pissed off that we won 10 again.
Another day they're screaming we should be doing what IU is doing.
They rant and rave that somehow all of these great coaches want to coach football at UK.
Then they're saying we can never be successful while we're in the SEC.

I and others have said many times that the fans don't understand football and have no idea how hard it is to win here when each staff has TO FIGHT WITH THEIR OWN FANS to get on board, but this display of psychoses really spells it out well.

Can someone with the admin PLEASE freeze this thread and pin it to the top of the board? PLEASE?!

Agree 100%
Follow UL and IU example.
Join a wussy conference.
Run up a glass jaw record.
Don't play any team in the top 40.
Make the play off top 12
Pack our small stadium
Get our ass handed to us in a playoff games
Play in a conference championship game, few extra bucks to make up for SEC money
9/10 win every season, fans feel good instead of doom and gloom of trying to compete with the NIL big dogs in the SEC.
UK has never been or will ever be a powerhouse team in the SEC.

I know it’s financially never going to happen because the money is too good and that’s what everything is about.

As a fan, I’ve wanted to leave for the ACC forever. That conference cares about basketball. The SEC has not (most of them never sell out unless UK comes to town). We obviously cannot be competitive in the SEC. Even South Carolina and Missouri have won division titles. ACC would be more up our alley.

Again, I know it won’t happen but as a fan, it would be nice.

If we were in the ACC we would be on the verge of getting left out of the mix when the top 4 or 5 schools bolt in within the next decade. That would destroy us in all sports.

I don’t think we would survive as an independent. Football would never be televised and we’d get no money. Basketball would not be able to schedule after December, and if we were just independent in football but joined another conference in basketball we would either be in a crumbling ACC or a second class citizen of the Big 12. Over the long term the program would seriously falter.

We are in the best possible spot here.

The SEC has historically been a rec league in basketball. Not until 1962 when Ray Mears came to Tennessee (and went 12-12 against Rupp) did the SEC give a crap.

With 16 "round robin" SEC games on your schedule, your stats will be padded. Sorry if this offends anyone, but basketball fans have the SEC to thank for a large part of our success. Rupp wasn't stupid. He knew this would be a great part of the winning formula.

I'm glad now to see other conference schools take basketball more seriously, though.

Bit of an overreaction on all accounts lol. Again I get the negativity but come on. We aren’t leaving the SEC to be independent man

Just think about all the other criminally dumb shit that gets said on here and this take dumber than all of it.

Just like. Wow.

Not too many Kentuckian's tuck tail and run. We are one of the Charter members. No reason to go anywhere. Work harder, get better. Oh, lowly Vandy and lowly South Carolina can have good years and we have a horrible year and tuck tail. Nah, we need to get tougher, better, stronger and compete as much as we can and as best we can. I feel under Stoops we have had tough teams, but we have had coaching gaffs and issues from day 1. It looks like we are in for down year 2 in a row coming up. Get over it and get better, if that means all out change, so be it. We have replaced 3 and 4 star players leaving in the portal for low 3 star guys, which is what we are looking at bringing in. We only have a couple of Power 4 players that we are getting to campus. We are getting MAC level players coming to look at us now. So be it. I have seen MAC players that are great pro players. But not sure that is what we are looking at right now. No matter, stay in the SEC, take your lumps, try to avoid 16th place next year, that will be our main goal. TRY HARDER STOOPS. WORK HARDER PLAYERS, we are KENTUCKY. We do not run. United we stand!

Half the top 25 is SEC basketball teams. I will give you that argument a decade ago but this ain't your granddaddy's SEC in basketball anymore. These other schools do care and pay the money to show it with the coaches, facilities and players.
The ACC is a dying conference dude.

Why would be want to voluntarily leave one of only two conferences in NCAA sports that is actually still relevant? The SEC and the B1G have just achieved a hostile takeover of college sports. Any team on the outside looking in is totally screwed going forward. The Big 12 and ACC are going to be about as relevant nationally as the MAC and Sun Belt. Anyone with any sort of pulse or resources is trying to get into the SEC or B1G. I actually look for these two conferences to break away from the NCAA and do their own thing in the not so distant future, mimicking the NFL with the AFC and NFC, each with its own divisions. Anyone not in the SEC or Big 10 isn't gonna be chit. Nobody will care if we are the best team in a joke league because nobody will even be paying attention.

We can't compete at the top so we just take our ball and go home? Wild take. Let's throw away the SEC money and leverage of selling SEC play to recruits. Coaching has put us in the position we are in, not the conference. When Stoops was fully engaged, we leveraged 10 win seasons and competed in games, even if they ended up in a losing effort. We saw flashes of that this year, even.

With Stoops being coach at Ky forever, I agree we need to be in a weaker conference, seems ever year new teams come into this league.

I don't think our basketball prowess means much to the conference.

Thank you sir for your comment. I agree and have been saying this for years. Joining the big 12 or acc would be the best move. UK could actually compete in those conferences.

Yea let's join the WAC. With NIL anybody can compete with the right amount of money, a strong QB and a good Coach. Look at Vandy this year.

No guarantee we would kill it in another conference. Most of the good players we get, come here because they want to play in the SEC.

To be clear, if we change conferences you aren't getting the same quality of players to come that you get now (quality debatable after a 4 win season but it would be worse n the acc or big 12). The SEC brand gets UK better players.

No reason we shouldn’t have been more competitive this past season with our overall roster, just think we missed on our QB and OTs and everything spiraled out of control after the SC thumping. Locker room issues, guys taking plays off, guys not giving a crap basically. We’re not leaving the SEC nor should we but in order to compete we have to get back to the mentality we had before NIL and bringing in these guys who don’t work out, maybe evaluate them a little better other than their star power coming out of HS. Maybe find an OC who can game plan around anything other than slinging the ball, maybe keep running the ball when it’s working.
