Looks like we will have

Waldy
McCoy (DH)
Burkes
Pitre
Gilliam
Gray
McCarthy (RF)
Byars
Smith

Lee on the bump

Leadoff walk for Waldy. Saw 3 balls before the first strike. McCoy goes down swinging. Balk moves Waldy over. Waldy steals 3rd. Elon catcher not happy with it as he thinks he was interferred with. Burkes strikes out. Pitre gets to hit and it pays off as he gets a 2 out hit to score Waldy. 1-0 UK. Walks kill. Pitre steals, it was real close but he's safe. Gilliam walks. Gray also working the count. Elon pitcher really struggling. A throw to second sails into right to advance both runners. Throw wasn't bad but it went off the glove. Two hopper to second ends the inning. 1-0

Lee starts with a K and then a 1 pitch out to second. Grounder to short makes it a quick inning.

McCarthy ground out to short. Byars flies out to very deep right. That one turned the right fielder around but he does bring it in. Caught it at his hip. Smith gets hit by a pitch. Waldy flies out to center for out 3. UK leads 1-0

Lee gets his second strikeout of the day. He worked ahead 2-0 and a hard grounder goes to short. Smith bobbled it a bit but he still makes the play for the second out. Byars makes a good play on a high chopper, but Holliman beats the throw to give Elon their first base runner of the day. Lee gets a third strikeout to end the 2nd.

1-0 UK going to 3

McCoy goes down swinging for the second time in as many at bats. Burkes swings at the first pitch and it is a ground out. Pitre gets his second two out hit of the day, this one to right field. Let's see if UK goes for the chaos here and tries to move Pitre into scoring position again. Gilliam worked ahead with 3 straight balls, but the Elon pitcher works back to a full count. Gilliam draws a walk that Elon fans don't like the call on. Gray also working ahead. Elon freshman pitcher struggling to get it over the strike zone in this one. Elon bullpen now waking up. Elon pitcher fell behind 2-0, but he worked back with three straight strikes and got Gray to strikeout to end the UK 3rd.

Still 1-0.

Good to see Pitre getting a couple of hits. Lot of base runners today just can’t get that big hit.

Lee gives up a single into left center that Waldy got to quickly to hold them to one base. 9 hole hitter up now for Elon. Elon looking to play some small ball here, matching the typical UK strategy, but Lee is struggling a bit to get the ball into the strike zone. Burkes goes out to talk to him and he responds with a strike down the middle. Not sure why Coolihan didn't put the bunt down there. He tries to put it down on the next pitch and pops it up foul. 2-2 pitch tails away from the 9 hole hitter and Lee picks up a strikeout.

Byars takes a grounder and tries to turn the double play and he sails it into right field and everyone is safe with runners at the corners with 1 out.

Lee gets a strikeout. Big right there to help lower the risk in this threat. Lee gets another strikeout to pitch out of the jam. 6 strikeouts for Lee in this one so far.

1-0 UK going to the 4th

Did the radio give any indication how tough of a play that was for Byars? He's had a tough series so far. Great job by Lee to get out of it. I love how aggressive UK's pitchers have been in this series. Going right after guys.

Sounded like he just rushed it because of the fast runner at first. Not sure that the radio guy indicated that it was a particularly difficult ball to field.

Sprake still out there for Elon and he starts off with a McCarthy strikeout. Sprake now has 5 Ks. Byars works a full count, but he watches one down the middle for strike three. Two strike base hit by Smith. He is now 4-7 on the weekend. UK sends Smith, but he gets thrown out trying to steal. UK has not been particularly successful trying to steal against Elon this weekend.

1-0 going to B4.

Lee starts the Elon 4th with another strikeout. First pitch goes to Pitre for the second out. Lee then gives up his first walk of the day for UK. A hit an run attempt might actually have helped the Cats as a liner goes to Pitre, who was moving to cover the bag. The extra steps to his right gave him a better jump on the baseball and he brings it in to end the 4th.

1-0 UK

New pitcher for Elon, DiLella, and Waldy greets him with a seeing eye single. McCoy strikes out for the third time this afternoon. Burkes with an oppo-taco home run to give UK a 3-0. A grounder up the middle for Pitre gives him his third hit of the day. Pitre is also thrown out trying to steal. How many is that on the weekend for UK? At least 4 that I am entirely sure of that have been thrown out trying to steal. Could be more. Gilliam grounds out to first to end the inning. However, UK gets their first home run of the season to extend the lead 3-0. Going to the bottom of the 5th.

Lee gets a comebacker for the first out, but then gives up a walk to the 9 hole hitter. One out walk goes for naught as UK gets a tailor-made double play to end the 5th.

3-0

Gray gets a single up the middle and McCarthy bunts him over. Strikeout by Byars. Smith grounds out to third to end the top of the 6th.

3-0.

Giles in to pitch for Lee.

Really good outing for Lee. UK starters 16 innings and only 2 runs allowed on the weekend.

Byars 0-10 and 2 errors so far. Really hope he can get going.

Giles debuts as a Wildcat with a strikeout. Gray hauls in one in right center for the second out. Two out single for Elon that goes into left field. A grounder to Pitre ends the threat and we go to the 7th.

3-0

He should have at least 3. Very much a home team score keeper. But, he also made a couple of great plays yesterday too.

New pitcher for Elon, Sieracki, a junior. Waldy having a good weekend gets a leadoff double. I believe UK has had just 3 extra base hits, and he has two of them. McCoy grounds off softly to third an an excuse me swing. Burks fell behind 0-2, but worked it back to full and then bounces a grounder to second for the second out. It did advance the runner to third. Pitre battling at the dish but he ends up grounding out to first base. Hard hit, but right at the first baseman.

3-0 going to the B7.

UK will go with a new pitcher once again as Cotto will take the mound for the Cats. Cotto gets a fly ball to center to start the bottom of the 7th. Cotto then records his first strikeout of 2023. Painted the corner with a fastball for strike three. A great diving catch in foul territory by Waldy in left ends the inning after Cotto had fallen behind in the count. Solid inning once again for UK pitching.

3-0 going to the 8th

Gilliam falls behind 0-2, but hits a single into right field to start the 8th. aaand I lost the radio feed. Nothing but static now. Gilliam apparently moved to third on a throwing error on an attempted pickoff move. Gray then singled to left center to score him. McCarthy flew out and then Byars ground out before Smith got hit by a pitch. Waldschmidt works a full count before going down on strikes to end the UK 8th.

UK adds one to make it 4-0 going to the bottom of the 8th. UK now has 10 hits on the day.

Another pitching change for UK as they go to Ryan Hagenow. He worked ahead 0-2 to the 9 hole hitter, but he hits one off the end of the bat past a diving Gilliam for a single. One thing that UK has done well under Roszel is that they come back after giving up hits and they limit the damage. They do so again with Hagenow following up that single with his first strikeout of 2023. He then gets a pop up out to Byars over at third. Then Pitre takes a grounder the short way to second and the 8th inning ends quietly.

4-0 UK going to the 9th.

Spinoza on to pitch for Elon. McCoy continues to struggle in this weekend and he likely finishes this weekend with a ground out to second. He's hitting just .154 over the weekend. Burkes puts one on a line but it finds a glove in right for the second out of the UK 9th. Pitre smokes one over the wall, but well foul. Pitre finishes his outstanding day with another hit, a drive through the right side to give him a 4 hit game. Gilliam then takes the first pitch he sees and flies out to right to end the UK 9th.

4-0 UK needing 3 outs to win this one.

As I kind of expected, Chavez will come in for UK to pitch this final inning. Chavez starts his UK debut with a strikeout, the 11th of the day for UK. Chavez then gives up a double on a 2-1 pitch. Another hard hit ball by Elon, but this one is hauled in by Gray in center. Chavez then ends the game on a good note getting the 12th UK strikeout of the day.

UK takes the series with a 4-0 win. Cats go to 2-1 on the season.

Sounds like maybe Ming talked to him about swinging the bat!?!! Imagine the damage if he would have just swung away the first 2 games!

Don't know the competition, but three runs in 3 games is impressive for the pitchers.

Elon hit .226 as a team last year. Their offense is atrocious. Still, UK pitching was good. Held them well below that .226 mark they had a year ago and pitched out of tight spots, even when the defense didn't help. I'd say they pitched to expectations. Hitting, I'm still a bit skeptical of.

Kind of surprised Byars started game 3.

A little early to be taking him out I think. Still, Mingione has been known to give some players a pretty long leash and others a shorter one. I imagine, given that Byars bumped everything around when he got eligible, that Mingione will give him a fairly long leash.
