Serious question, it looks like this could be his last season at Louisville especially if he cannot win at a high level, would the fans welcome KP back at UK if this was to happen?

Yeah sure why not.
He wouldn't be coming here to be head coach. I think he did a decent job while he was here.

I mean overall I'd kind of be indifferent to it. I feel like coaching staffs tend to get a bit overrated/underrated. They either get too much blame or too much credit IMO.

But if they want him back and he wants to come back, yeah sure why not

Have a good friend from HS who is lifelong UL fan. He is really down on KP and thought they should never have hired him. Talks like he still knows some local people (my friend lives in Ala.) and believe KP has really short leash.

KP is an example of a good assistant coach that can't head coach college basketball for whatever reason. There are multiple examples of this through the years. It was a terrible hire, unfortunately. I at least wished him some success. But he's awful.

I think one example is Orlando, he left Kentucky and bounced around as a head coach and didn’t succeed. He’s back now but he is a good recruiter and a good assistant

I think you ABSOLUTELY take him, and you show Bruiser Flint the door, in my opinion.
KP w/the UK brand is a proven elite recruiter
He builds relationships with the kids, which is vital
But most importantly, I think he's the guy that can handle Cal, can give him "tough" feedback, etc
He's also a known developer for post players

We took Antigua back, so why not? But if Cal isn't the coach here, he has no chance to come back.

For sure you take him back. Everyone loves KP.

Honestly he took cover a dumpster fire at UL, I would have been surprised by any coach bringing them back to life within 3 years.

I like Payne but I have really no way of knowing how good a coach he is or has been. Some people are just better as assistants because of their personalities or demeanor. Some on here were raving for years about how good a coach he is, everyone always assumes any coach on the staff of a blueblood program is a good coach, but that's not always true. If he is as good as some say, they shouldn't have been so bad last year, if they are not much better this year, you have your answer.

I agree for the most part, but someone calling him, or any assistant anywhere, a "good coach" doesn't mean they're saying he'd be a great head coach. It could be he's a great coach of concepts, a great coach of post play, a great coach of defensive schemes, etc.

I think you definitely take him back, if there's an opening and he wants to come back. He isn't some magical missing piece to the coaching staff. But he relates well to the players, and has recruiting ties.

I would predict a replacement would come from the Big East with exception of Pitino. Someone like Hurley, Smart or even some of the others.

He didn't really bounce around. He got canned during his 3rd season at USF for having a terrible record and cheating.

For all that Cal has done over the years, his coaching tree is pathetic. Is Bruiser Flint his most successful assistant that became a head coach?

I've heard that payne was crucial for our post player development.

That does not mean he needs to go ahead and coach our rival's team.

Its a paradox, how some coaches are better than others. Some never suit up to play, others played in the NBA.

Cal's tree is pathetic tbh. No coach from his branch is seemingly any good at what they do. Even recruiting. Justus? Awful. KP? Not great. Antigua? Meh and cheated.

Rick is the only coach I know that has a solid coaching tree. Tubby and Donovan were very successful

I agree with this. They do get to much credit or to much blame. And that goes both ways. Win or lose. I would not coach for 10 million a year swear on my life I wouldn't if I had a family. Man social media can ruin some lives because ppl take this shit too far.

A coach does deserves a little backlash at times... That just comes with the territory and it's why coaches got into the sport altogether alot it times to begin with is dreams of being a star and wanting the press and all that shit. That bad press cones with it though and in the social media age it's just brutal. Its different. Even it your successful somebody still mad and bitching and attacking a guy online somewhere and coaches families read that shit. I don't care what they say. They read it. About KP, I don't have an opinion either way. Just need whoever is here to figure it out and win some games. Alot of them and go ahead and win the whole thing... FF and all 😂.

This is one of the few times I would want to see Cal lend a lifeline to an old assistant coach of his bringing them back on the staff much like he did bringing Coach O back. KP isn't just a 'yes man' or an empty bench seat. His role with player relations and track record developing front court players as an assistant speaks for itself. We were all sad to see him go and not sure why this narrative would change just because it did not work out as a head coach. Being the coach of Louisville is irrelevant to me since he played there and eventually came here on the coaching staff.
