John Pelphrey vs UL (1991)

Thanks for posting this as this game had alot to do with Pel becoming my favorite player at UK ever.

You guys might want to go to Jon Scotts UK page and look at how many categories Pel is part of the top 30 in. Its like 5-6 different stat cats.

If the Refs didnt get him in foul trouble v Duke we would have beat the Devils and went on and win it all.

That group got more out of themselves than most any other SR's to ever go through UK. Our style of play made it hard to beat us, even without ALL of our players being 5 stars. This team was SO much fun to watch!!!

Although I have NOT forgiven him for leaving and returning to UofL, Rick was the VERY BEST coach for bringing UK basketball back to prominence. If he would have stayed, Coach K could have been the 2nd best coach of all time.

He's also near the top of my list. Loved that dude's game, but moreso his heart. He's the one UK player in our history who I am absolutely certain had more love for the program than I do. To this day seeing him interviewed in the locker room after the dook loss will make me cry like a baby.

I was born in ‘83 and Pel was basically my first memory of UK basketball. I guess it was the red hair (along with his game of course) that made him stick in my mind. But going to blue/white scrimmages with my dad as a 6-7 year old in Memorial and watching the unforgettables treat it with such intensity — like a real game — is, well, unforgettable.

Definitely and all time favorite. I can remember his freshman year Eddie Sutton putting him out front handling the ball and it was a disaster. By his senior year he was awesome. Like they said in the video, Ky's version of Larry Bird.

Surprised the video didnt show the famous finger swag at the UL bench ? or was that at UL the following year ? Anyway , no greater player at UK in my mind . The Unforgettables are my favorite team in my 5 decades of being a BBN fanatic
They always deserve their spot in our history, in the rafters and in the hearts of BBN. A really special group. They should have won that Duke game, I’ll never get over it.

God, I loved that team. Every single thing about it. Right down to Rick. I know all good things must come to an end, but damn him for leaving.

I have a crazy story about that game. I was a junior in HS in MO at the time and was at our state Beta Club convention. My school actually ran me for VP and I won the election the night before the game. Could not have cared any less, I was just a jock but the personality and pretty face they thought they needed to win. The sponsors and club ran the campaign, sponsors wrote my speech, and I suited up and delivered a winner behind the podium. Honest to goodness, my first thought after I won was it might help me outkick my coverage that night at the dance. But then my world flipped when they told me the newly elected VP emc'd the talent show the next night. I was PISSED. Tried everything to get out of it. No luck.

So here's the story after the much long winded background. I go out and buy a Sony Walkman that day. Slip the Walkman in my suit jacket pocket, tear one of the ear pieces off the headset (no fancy earbuds in those days) and run it down the arm of my suit jacket. I sat in a chair to the side of the stage and would listen to the game while each act performed. I'd get up, walk up to the podium, and glumly announce the next group, go take my seat and continue listening. I still have the video of that stupid talent show where you can see me multiple times reacting to the game while some group is dancing or whatever. It was hilarious.

The talent show ended and there was about 3 mins left in the game. Problem is, there's about 1000 kids (no exaggeration) headed for three elevators. I sprinted up 18 floors of stairs to see the last 20 seconds with all my buddies in the hotel room, who'd obviously skipped the talent show. I'm 48 yrs old, and I still can't bring myself to watch the game in its entirety.
