Jamal Murray

Love his game.

I don't want to make exaggerated comments yet...i'll wait till Duke game.

He has a chance to be among the upper-echelon UK guys - Davis, Wall, Towns, Cousins, etc. His scoring ability is pretty remarkable.

Would be great for the program. The more future top 50 NBA players, the better dividends it will ultimately pay for the program.

One of the writers, I should pay better attention, said Calipari is really having fun coaching this team.
Maybe it is all the players are sponges and willful learners. Could be how much he enjoys coaching elite guards, no offense to the Harrison's who took us to 2 FF, including s championship game. If WCS plays we win. Like last year Pouthress defense was needed.
The reporter said you can see it on Cal's face, having fun and not being stressed.
What do you all think is the difference?

Yeah it's pretty wild that if we got the players we initially identified and made our recruiting top priority we would have gotten one year of Mudiay and Malik Newman this year. Cal is a recruiting juggernaut but when we have recruiting misses and still end up with the better option's for the program it's just not fair. (One year of Mudiay splitting time with Andrew < two years of Ullis)

Murray is one of those guys who deceptively looks like he's moving slow because he's so in control. His nickname could be SMOOTH.

I said from the moment I thought he had a shot at landing him that he would be the best guard Calipari has ever landed, I'm standing by it.

I see him as really different from any freshman we've had, because IMO his number 1 quality is his extreme confidence/experience/sure-handedness.

He's already been one of the floor leaders on a Canadian team full of grown men playing some really stiff competition, and he's absolutely lit it up. Not to mention his domination on the All Star circuit.

Of our freshmen, we've had other players who came out the gate with crazy confidence and the skill to match (Wall), we've had monsters who were the undisputed best in the country from day 1 (Cousins), we've had a budding demigod who started a little raw but quickly grew to envelop the basketball universe with his abilities (Davis), we've had guys with crazy leadership ability from the first game (Knight). We've had a bunch of other complete baller freshmen like Jones, Noel, Randle, Young, etc...

But listen to Murray's interviews. He's not phased by anything. He talks like a 6 year NBA veteran. He doesn't own a phone. He doesn't do social media. You'll never see him get too high or low about anything. He's not too concerned with big noisy crowds, whether for him or against him. He likes playing against high level competition, but he doesn't get particularly high for any game, because he believes that what he decides to do is far more important than what his opponent decides to do. He intends to impose his will on whoever he's up against.

I don't know if his ceiling is as high as some of those other guys - he's got great size and length for the position and a crazy skill set so I do think he'll be an NBA starter, but his biggest edge is that he just kills the little boys around him while he's playing like a grown ass man. Watch all those little floaters and reverse layups and off balance Js that just swish through - he's got the Paul Pierce/"Old Guy at the rec center that used to be D1" repertoire.

And I have a feeling that for those reasons, he's going to be the most consistent freshman guard we've ever had - which will be great to count on when important games get tight.

Between him and Ulis, regardless of whoever else is on the court, I love our options in the clutch.

Great post and perfectly on point. I wonder if his pulse even gets above 65. Just so calm, cool and composed.

I have to agree with you.

John Wall obviously had the IT factor too. But the guy couldn't shoot from distance so defenders at least had a chance by playing off.
Brandon Knight was a great shooter but wasn't exactly generous with the ball.
Bledsoe was very underrated but was a very streaky shooter.
Harrison was a good big guard. He could overpower smaller guards but was never going to outrun anyone. Also an unreliable shooter.

Murray seems to have the best qualities of many of Cal's former guards. He's not as quick as Wall and not as tough as Bledsoe. But he's deceptively quick and he's a much better passer than any of Cal's former guards and I think as good shooter as Knight.

Calipari best recruiting job EVER. Some were freaking out in April, and may Calipari recruited better this summer than most coaches in 300 schools do in their lifetime

We have been extremely lucky on the guys we have missed on for several years now. One of the reasons I have stopped paying much attention to recruiting. I used to get so worked up about players, then we miss out on them, and it turns out for the better.

Wasn't knight around 37% or so from 3? I think Murray is going to be better than that.

I've been watching him over a year now and pumping him on this board when no one never heard of him.
What you guys saw tonight was just a typical random game for him. I've seen him have these stats and his team behind by 5 and his coach will tell him to score and he goes off and finishes the game with 15 straight points and gets the W.

Everything you guys have stated I stated when I used to watch him in HS. Very Smooth and can be quite for a 1/2 then u look at your stats and he has 15/6/8. He then can be flashy and dominate the game and all you notice is him and nobody can stop him.

I first compared his scoring bursts to Jodie Meeks when he was here and how he could score but Murray is a much better player.
Some things he likes to do that can get him in trouble is being fancy with the ball or trying to pass between guys legs and stuff. Lol his shot is getting off faster now and it's getting close to the speed that Curry can get them up. You give Murray an inch and he can burn your eyes out.

Yeah. Remember that loser Malik Newman? Can you guys believe we actually wanted that bum? Pfffttt LMAO. Murray is one of the reasons that WE"RE THE BEST DAMN TEAM IN THE NATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BBN MOFO"S

I think it's better to just focus on the positive of the guys we got instead of bashing guys that went elsewhere. They're still kids.

And Newman is far from a loser. Kid won 4 straight state titles in high school.

I'm thrilled with how it worked out for us however.

Murray reminds of a guy like Tony Parker or Ginobli, just a real advanced old school game. Love having a guy like this! Just gonna make this team even more lethal! Can't wait to see what this team looks like come March
I think this is about right. Like those 2, Murray just seems to know how to play the game. He knows where to be on the floor, and how to get to where he wants to be on the floor. He doesn't have obviously superior athletic gifts, but the athletic ability he does have (which, though not spectacular, is still really good) gets put to the best possible use because he's such a smart player. Like Ginobili and Parker, Murray seems to think faster than a normal player, and it allows him to have a huge impact on the game in a lot of different ways.

I'd also liken it to QB's like Joe Montana, Drew Brees, and Tom Brady. None of those guys had exterior gifts that obviously set them above everyone else. They had gifts that you couldn't see until you watched them play, an ability to understand the game and make quicker and better decisions than other guys. That was their IT factor. Murray seems to have IT. Maybe he won't end up a superstar, but I'd be shocked if he isn't at least a very, very effective pro.

[roll] Yeah I can hear the usual coaches......(Herman Munster) Darn, darn, darn, darn, darn....

Cal is just having fun and others can't stand it that they are working and Cal is having fun. What they call work, he calls home- Col. Troutman

This may sound funny, but he doesn't move like an elite athlete, he moves like a basketball player. It seems no matter where he's going, he has an idea of his spacing, when he needs to get the ball off, and where his best position on the floor is. He's the opposite of the Harrison's bull rush and flick the ball up.

His shot arcs so well and looks like it has such a soft touch. He's definitely got that "it" factor, and I'm so excited to see him play this year.

Overstating the obvious.....but this guy is going to be very very good. He just has that "it" quality. I am super excited about this guy in a John Wall, Davis/MKG kind of way.
The silent assassin, smooth and deadly. This kid is a killer with the ball. And Ulis and Brisco will get him the ball when hes open. and Fox Mulder is a very good 3 pt shooter. Know his first names isnt fox but easy to remember his last name this way.
