Jamal Murray reminds me of........

There is not a valid comparison between Jamal Murray and Pete Maravich. Maravich was a true wing guard who played the point most of the time at LSU. Murray is a true point guard who will play the wing most of the time at Kentucky. Murray is a physically stronger player who will be a much better defender and rebounder. But Maravich had a significant NBA career, so I will wait before saying anything that would diminish Maravich in the comparison. But I think Murray is the best guard who has played at Kentucky since Louie Dampier, who was a 1st team All American. I know that is a bold statement, but Murray is 1 of the 2-3 best college basketball players in the country. Of course, Murray is 5 inches taller than Dampier. At this point, Murray compares best with Dwayne Wade or Kobe Bryant, because Murray is a strong, athletic player who can create shots and score at the rim, in mid-range, or from the perimeter. By the way, Murray has a shooting flaw. He often takes shots without squaring his shoulders to the basket. Calipari will correct that, and we will see some unearthly shooting nights by Murray. Murray skipped his senior year of high school. He is young, underrated, and has tremendous upside.
I like his comparison way more than yours. You say he is a pg, then proceed to compare him to two guys who are clearly not pg's. We've had better guards than Louie Dampier here since the 60's.

Not the best choice of words..........:flushed:
looks like someone that would go to Duke for some reason - he's all over the place, that's for sure

I was thinking Matthews was like Liggins before they made that reference in last night's telecast (last night's scrimmage which I JUST watched today was the first time I"ve seen these guys play)

Labissere ia like frwakin T Prince !!

The way he shoots the ball coming off screens remind me of Mitch Richmond. Of course, I don't think he'll be nearly the shooter Mitch was, but Jamal is smart like Richmond was at choosing his spots.

Murray is going to be a very good pro. I know there's been so much emphasis on athletic prowess, but I'm not sold on Murray having to be some type of transcendent athlete to thrive. His scoring skills are elite, and it basically offsets the notion of his needing any type of athletic boost to get by in the NBA.
I agree with this. I think his best case scenario is like being the Paul Pierce of the 2 spot. Which is pretty damn good.

Sort of a cross between Devin Booker and Doron Lamb. Not saying he'll shoot as well as those guys...maybe. But he is so smooth and confident, quick release, and can get to the basket if/when he wants. I like the 3/4 speed comment the OP (I think) made.

Like it or don't. There is no comparison between Murray and Maravich. Murray is a physically strong player who scores proficiently at the rim, mid-range, or on the perimeter. Wade and Bryant are also versatile scorers all over the floor. You are wrong about Bryant. Kobe often brings the ball downcourt and initiates the offense. Maravich had no mid-range game, and did not penetrate nearly as well. Maravich was a deadly perimeter shooter who never played a lick of defense or rebounded. Murray will be a very good defender and rebounder. Most people haven't figured out yet how good Murray is. The kid missed his senior year of high school, but he already plays like a skilled NBA guard on both ends. People are still comparing Murray to Booker and Mercer, but Murray is way better. The comparison to Curry is not far off tho.

Tony Parker. Laid back demeanor, every time he shoots you think it's going in, a quick release with not a lot of arc on the shot. Crafty with speed, great court vision, high basketball IQ and can take over a game if need be. JMHO

I am really showing my age but what about the Big O.

The only player to average a Triple Double.

I've always said a bigger Tony Parker of the Spurs due to his craftiness around the rim.

Harden or Ginobli would be mine. Good not great athletes, good ballhandlers and passers. Solid scorers from everywhere on the floor. Smart players.

You say he's nothing like Maravich, then compare him to the guy who is basically a modern day Maravich. You don't know what you're talking about.

He reminds me a little of Stephen Curry. Just sooo crafty and can score from anywhere. Also, just a blast to watch!

He has a different game than either of them, but there is a lot of truth in this. The difference is that Harden and Ginobili are Kamikaze's when it comes to driving to the basket, and they use that to set up jumphots. Murray is more of a pure shooter, but also clearly has an ability to get to the hoop.

I can't really come up with a comparison for Murray that I like (and some of the ones in this thread are unbelievably bad), but what I get from Murray more than anything is that he looks like a pro. Not physically, though his body does seem mature for his age, but in terms of how he plays. Murray plays the game the way you'd expect a good, smart, 5-6 year NBA vet to play. The right word is probably "crafty", which is why he's being compared to guys like Harden, Ginobili, and Tony Parker, because that's what they are.

I think Harden is a much better athlete than most give him credit for.

You're right, but I think the same thing is true of Murray.

Looking at the numbers we have available, Harden appears to be faster and stronger than Murray. Murray may be a slightly better leaper, but Harden makes up for it with his freakish wingspan and reach.

Murray looks like a good athlete to me. Probably on par with a Steph Curry.

DeAngelo Russell is a pretty good comparison. They go about it a little differently but neither is regarded as an elite athlete... both have good size that can translate to the 1 or 2 in the NBA. Both can play on or off the ball. Russell has more length though but it looks like Murray has a little better short area quickness and Curry like abilities to create separation.

Murray's standing reach measurements are all over the place... recently 8'1 at UK combine... but 8'4.5" at 2014 hoop summit. I'd guess he's closer to 8'4" on standing reach just by his height and wingspan. 8'1" standing reach would put him at PG only in the NBA and part time.

Murray would be a good comparison to anyone that is a "shotmaker"... he seems to have it all when it comes to scoring....Shooting, runners, midrange, left hand, right hand etc... He has a randomness about his moves that makes him unpredictable while guarding him. One thing though... he is quick, but does not have elite quickness or elite straight line speed - so he'll look a little more human when he faces better competition. He's talented and skilled though and thus far he's looked good against better competition at the hoops summit and the Pan Am games. College is a different game and the intensity and focus of Ds will improve. Good thing is, he'll have Ulis and Skal to help him get open jumpers without having to do everything himself.
