Izzo

He’s gotta be close to retirement. Lost at home to a team without a coach

Somehow they will move up in the rankings. That's one thing about MSU.. 10 losses, 13 losses? doesn't matter, they are still always "seen" as that tough team who always plays NBA-level competition.

They are the only team with double digit losses in the Kenpom top30.

Them being top 30 makes a mockery of his entire system

It's the illusion that the Big 10 is a tough conference. Or something.

That's exactly what it is, overvaluing conferences like the Big10 and Big12.

Kenpom is a good start, but it's clear it needs a lot of work. The way they factor Strength of Schedule is absolutely borked. They have UK's non conference schedule as 186th.. and I just don't get that, when we played UNC, Kansas and Gonzaga (all three in the top21), then Miami, UNCW, and St. Joes, all around 100. Hard to imagine a schedule like that is seen as middle of the pack.

For reference, Auburns is 149th.. and they played Baylor as a ranked team.. and that's it. Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Indiana, and USC.. and then a few other teams in the 100s like us.. and then several other teams below 270 (also like us).. And yet, something about the metric math makes them have a SOS ranked nearly 50 spots higher.. which in turns factors into their ranking.

Izzo biggest mistake was not taking the UK job.... he thought at the time he was Coach K.

WRONG he would of taken his career to another level with Kentucky... he screwed up big time.

@Aike whats up with why the numbers say MSU is “so good”.
They had the 12th best statistical profile in my model coming into today. Decent offense/defense balance, no bad losses, reasonably high SOS.

I don’t think I’d.call it “so good.” The numbers would suggest that they are borderline Sweet Sixteen team, who would lose in the round of 32 more often than not.

It does happen to most coaches. Happened somewhat to K, Roy, Knight, Crum and Boeheim. Same goes for Rupp and Calipari. I believe these highly successful coaches get set in their ways and become too stubborn to adapt to change.
Partial credit to Cal, he’s tried changing some things. Izzo? He is the epitome of square block round hole. Whined about transfer portal. Whined about NIL. Just refuses to change. Cal while stubborn has at least TRIED a couple of different things, albeit to mixed results.

When was Izzo offered the Kentucky job .

2009 before Cal took the job.... likely also after Tubby left but my memory tonight isn't that good.

Article from that time

"It's hard to turn down Kentucky, too. And I think that's one reason Izzo would listen. He always has wondered what it would be like to coach at one of those schools where the players come to you, instead of the other way around. There are only a few: Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas, Duke, maybe one or two others.

And then there is this: I think Izzo at least wants to know that he could coach at one of those schools -- that they would want him and that a place like Kentucky, which has an almost unhealthy passion for basketball, would be willing to put him in charge of its passion. I think that is normal, too."

I think Chris Holtmann is one of the biggest frauds in CBB and what Diebler's doing is proof. He's just playing more people. Devin Royal played today for Buckeyes--had 14 pts and several big defensive plays/loose balls, etc...and he was rotting on the bench. Taison Chatman never played. Okpara didn't start playing until Holtmann thought he'd lose his job last year--same with increase in Gayle/Thornton's roles. He's either a liar as a recruiter or he's incapable of adjusting to what he has. Ohio State hadn't won in 12 yrs in East Lansing. Diebler just got it done with Freshman playing a huge factor. I like what Diebler's doing in his fill in time and they are an actual dangerous team in the Big Ten right now because they are deep and Diebler's not afraid to let guys play.

As for Izzo. Today he started Xavier Booker the former UK recruit who is a 6'10 face up big who Izzo has complained about since having to travel to recruit him. He's not played him to the point that when he started, he got a standing ovation today and was hearing roars of approval whenever he did anything and the crowd groaned when he was out. With him in the game, Spartans were up 13 pts--Izzo took him out around 15 min mark--proceeded to score 9 pts in the last 11 minutes of the game and was outscored 20-5 to close it after peaking being up 52-40. He hates how Booker plays and just lets him rot. Everyone sees the talent/addition he makes for them--but Izzo just can't stand playing him and goes with Sissoko, Cooper, and Koehler along with Hall--who is a SR who has played well lately. Izzo's most important player is Akins and he has to watch 6th yr Tyson Walker shoot bricks and take hero shots and AJ Hoggard's mid talent ass waste time too. But he loves them.

Izzo's refusal to use Booker is the oddest thing I've seen this year in the Big Ten. He immediately helped their offensive production. He's mobile/can shoot/pass and finishes well around the rim. He's just a face up guy and not a 5 man. Mike DeCourcy mentioned it on BTN today/tonight as well. It's a case where the old coach is fighting with everyone else's eyes and now he's up against it. Izzo gets gifted a lot of stuff, but he's under some teams everyone has on the "Bubble" in the Big Ten and he's got Purdue on the road, Northwestern at home-and think they've beaten him 3 or 4 straight, and ends at Indiana which should be a win-but he can't lose going into Big Ten Tournament. This is coming off losing to a defensively putrid Iowa team and Ohio State in coaching transition at home this past week.

Big Ten should be a 5 bid Conference this year. Playing 20 regular season games and having to hear Iowa, Minnesota, are "likely in" from Big Ten media makes Al Jazeera sound like they are factual reporters. It's embarrassing.

Right now outside of Purdue, I like how Ohio State is looking on the court with the coaching change. Diebler is doing a reallly good job of utilizing the personnel and showing trust in them. Transfer from MN Jamison Battle didn't even play a second today and Ohio State went into Breslin Center and won for first time since '12 season. They have a lot of talent/depth-but Holtmann was/is garbage as a HC. I'd not be shocked to see Purdue playing Ohio State for the Big Ten Championship if they are on opposite sides of the Conference Tournament bracket. Devin Royal is impressive, wasn't getting utilized and they have enough bodies to throw at you with a solid PG, good wing and some freedom to play open court basketball at times.

Michigan State should be on the bubble at best, but because the NCAA and CBS loves them some Tom Izzo they will probably end up a 7 or 8 seed.

You think Bruce Thornton hits the portal?
I know UK recruited him early and actually had him visit.
He would give us a physical guard to compliment Fland.
If Reed returns it a moot point because UK's starting backcourt is set.

I'm not sure. Usually know very little about Portal stuff but in Ohio State's case, I actually work for a guy who is very good friends with Taison Chatman's father. For those who don't know Taison is a Freshman guard for the Buckeyes. I'll see if he's heard anything. Boss and I were thinking Taison was gone after this yr until Holtmann got fired.
