It's time to discuss Isaac Humphries

again, i think he can develop into a solid defensive player on the perimeter but too often last night when put in the pick and roll he was forced to sag 5 feet off, daring them to shoot mid range/3 pointers so he wouldnt get burnt around the edge. against albany this may be ok, but against higher level teams, hes gonna be forced to step out and defend farther away from the basket and not sag off so much. I noticed a few plays where he did well pushing the player away from the basket but not consistently.
It hurts too bc clearly we are not good at rotating on defense, especially when it comes to crashing the boards as evidenced by how many times the got offensive rebound when our guy was forced to help. if we were better at help defense and rebounding, i think he could get more minutes and it would be fine, but they had MORE offensive rebounds than we did which is a staggering stat. They also had more second chance points and points in the paint, categories we should dominate against a smaller team
matthews i noticed on a few plays did well at helping in pick and roll defense but as a whole i didnt totally pay attention to the help defense.
I think humphries can get more minutes as we become a better defensive team and a better rebounding team. but he may be limited early in the season

Thank you sir for actually breaking down the game tape. (I'm too lazy on a weekend to do it!) You're 100% correct about the points in the paint and the disparity in offensive rebounding being VERY troubling. Also just thank you for providing actual basketball analysis on this forum its very refreshing with about 90% of posts on here typically just being opinion based conjecture with no actual basketball based observations to back it up.

I feel like there's an echo chamber about Humphries defense, and I just haven't seen evidence that he's so bad on D that he can't get playing time.

It's as plain as the nose on your face. I have no problem seeing it. The only reason it isn't more obvious is because Humphries doesn't play many minutes. His defensive footwork needs a lot of work. But the kid is only 17, and missed his senior season of high school. He will improve.
