Watched some of IU Purdue game, and at one point they showed that Indiana had the most total starts of transfers of any team in the country this year, as evidence that Cignetti had completely and successfully turned over the roster (he did). No. 3 on the list was also no surprise, Colorado. Coach Prime has silenced a lot of doubters this year with the total rebuild he put together, and probably will have the Heisman Trophy winner to brag about by Saturday night.
So far, so good, sounds like a total retool via the portal is the way to go. But wait . . . .
. . . guess who was no. 2 on the list of most starts by transfers this year?
It was Mississippi State, who is the worst team in the SEC. And since I was watching Purdue (from what I saw, quite possibly the worst P4 team in the country), have to note they brought in highly recruited Hudson Card to be their QB1 last season, and went 4-8 and 1-11 while he was the starter.
Point being, it is a lot easier said than done to just rebuild your roster in the off season with transfers. Cignetti and Sanders did it by taking a lot of kids from lower levels, who they knew could really run and play. Have no idea where Miss State got the bulk of their transfers, but it obviously did not work. We have mainly brought in kids from other P4 programs, e.g., Ohio State, Bama, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee, and that has not worked either.
Personally, if I were the GM of UK football, I would try to keep the younger players happy and build the defense around the young kids already on the roster, e.g., the Smith twins from Corbin, Nichols, Brian Robinson, etc. On offense, I would go with Boley/Wimsatt at QB, Wilcox/Patterson and freshmen at RB; Gilmore/Maclin (try to keep him)/Rodriguez for receivers.
So, main thing I would do with portal is look for offensive linemen, not sure there are enough other good players and NIL resources out there to cure all our ills at once via the portal.
