Except... these games (even w/ the potential L) are better for us (under Cals model) in the long run than playing even a mid-level Colonial team. With Cal we always have to remember that Ls are part of the process in getting to where we want to be in March (the [too often unrealistic and unrealized] trade-off being we lose the all-time wins but compete for championships).
By signing 5* frosh and refusing to recruit transfers over them (or losing transfers that know that they won't play over our 5*s) our model has been set. Rarely we get that guy that sticks around, gets court time, and excels as an upperclassman... and even more rarely we get that truly ascendant freshman talent (a 5* 18 year old kid capable of outplaying 23 year old men).
With a young team, we need games like UNCW. Our development is dependent on our ability to be exposed as early as possible, and then hopefully for those deficiencies to get corrected.
