Has the coaching staff improved our football team?

After spring practice, some facts and guesses.

Fact- Although Landyn Watson did not stand out in spring practice, Coach Stoops did not add another ILB (and did not even appear to try) in the spring portal, to the surprise of some in the media.

My guess- Our coaches are pleasantly surprised and impressed with Daveran Rayner and particularly with Grant Godfrey. They trust Alex Afari. Devin Smith remains an unknown factor but has probably shown promise as well.

Fact- We hardly knew you, Wallace Unamba. OT transfer Unamba enrolled at UK in January and then quickly left again in April.

My guess- Young OTs Malachi Wood and Darrin Strey, not to mention starters Alex Wollschlaeger and Shirazh Pete, decisively outplayed Unamba in spring practices. Unamba is not a bad downhill run blocker, but was not ready at all for the speed and agility of SEC edge rushers.

Fact- Portal departures of Barion Brown, Donte Key, Hardley Gilmore, Anthony Brown-Stephens, and Shamar Porter basically wiped out UK's WR room.

My guess- Bush Hamdan still thinks Gilmore is a rising star. (Hamdan basically said as much.) When Gilmore decided to return to UK, it was a fortuitous occurrence that could hardly have been better timed from La'Damian Washington's point of view. In spring practice, Washington was very impressed with Jamori Maclin, David Washington, and DJ Miller, and also found Troy Stellato and JJ Hester better than advertised. The only conditional comments I heard were about Fred Farrier, who didn't really impress Washington due to a lack of athleticism. But I heard the coaches think Rico Crowder and Spencer Leadbetter could help a little if needed. The new spring addition Ashton Cozart doesn't have much experience but is tall, athletic, and fast. I am guessing Coach Washington thinks his room is loaded with talent and numbers as long as he can get them ready to play.

Fact- Evan Wibberley received a healthy NIL reward to transfer to UK with the expectation that he would replace Eli Cox as our starting C. But Jaden Burton added >15# of good muscle this offseason and beat out Wibberley for the starting C job. Some have attributed this to a spring injury to Wibberley.

My guess- With Josh Braun's arrival, Burton saw the handwriting on the wall and decided he would not finish his UK career as a bench jockey if he could help it. Until now, Burton's primary problem has been a lack of SEC level strength. His work in the weight room fixed that. He has never lacked athleticism. Wibberley has 2 years of eligibility left, so he can stick around and get into the gym if he is up to it. For now, Burton is an upgrade over Wibberley and an adequate SEC starting C.

I hope you have $100 in cash you don't need. If you hadn't made this dumb bet, you could have donated it to 15 and actually done some good with it.
same schedule as last year and we pulled out 4 wins. I may lose the bet, and I think I prefaced I hope I do, but it certainly wasn’t dumb.

If we go into the season with rayner and afari as our mlb, we are in huge trouble. I love both those guys, but they cant both be at mlb. Way too light. We wont stop anything inside.

Going by the rankings of the players the staff definitely has laid the groundwork for improvement talent wise. But in the SEC it's get better or get gone.
For some truly unknown reason Kentucky seems to struggle with discipline issues, which is really a head scratcher as much of an old school character Stoops comes across as.
But as far as has the staff worked to upgrade the answer is unquestionably yes.

I don’t have an opinion about the future results or whether the changes will have a positive or negative impact going forward. The thing I look at, the areas everyone could see last year, OLine struggles, inexplicable play calls for certain players, and undisciplined play out of various players. The staff saw what we were all seeing and took the steps they thought were needed to address it. If it works or not, don’t know, but it won’t be from a lack of effort on their part.

OK, then if it doesn't work, what will a repeat poor season be due to? Me, all this talk doesn't matter, just the on-field results.

I agree with on the field. I haven't formed an opinion or picked a side on something that hasn't happened yet. If they look like last year, can't see where I would have much stomach for that. Look like that 21' team but run into some really good teams, that would be cause for optimism IMO.

That's demonstrably false. Afari is the same size as AL projected starting Mike LB Deonte Lawson, Auburn projected starting Mike LB Demarcus Riddick, and TX projected starting Mike LB Liona Lefau, and he's actually larger than OK projected starting Mike LB Kip Lewis and Ole MS projected starting Mike LB Suntarine Perkins. Here's how it works. In a 3-man front, it's the job of the NT and the 3-tech to keep offensive linemen off your interior LBs so your LBs can use their sideline to sideline speed and athleticism to control the 2nd level of the defense and make plays. Afari is not only athletic, he's also a tough cookie. It hasn't been well reported yet, but Daveren Rayner added some good muscle during his redshirt year.

But I think redshirt freshman Grant Godfrey is the real equalizer. Godfrey is the nephew of former all SEC and all pro LB Randall Godfrey. Grant had an outstanding spring and is in the battle for the starting Mike LB job. He is 6'3" and up near 240# now. He has that monster pedigree and is going to be a defensive star.

The fact that Stoops and his staff didn't try to add another ILB through the spring portal tells us something that you are not explicitly acknowledging here.

Has the coaching staff improved UK FB team?

Depends on when the question is posed. In January, 2019, not only was the answer an unequivocal "yes", but the improvement was at a level most UK football fans previously thought impossible. I clearly remember many fans describing why 7 wins was the program's "ceiling". Then Stoops won 10. That was the same coach we have now.

It's entirely fair to discuss the parade of OCs, leading to an offense ranking at or near the bottom of the SEC. Stoops tried to evolve but struggled. The question is whether he has learned from the struggles, and whether he is tough enough to fight back. Some people do learn. I have my own ideas, and I believe Stoops dramatically improved our roster during this offseason. But seeing is believing. This fall will be interesting.

Afari killed us last year when he had to move inside. Killed us. I love him, but playing in the middle isnt his best use.

Afari didn't "kill us". In any case, LBs can't do their jobs unless the NT and the 3-tech do theirs, which didn't happen in 2024. You know that. Afari has had another offseason of gym work and he added 10# of good weight. If he can't do his job, he will lose it. The defensive star of spring practice was Grant Godfrey.

He was swallowed whole by blocks the entire time he spent inside. Not a knock on him because hes great, just not there.

If hes going to be anything other than a doormat for opposing OL, hes going to need a major step forward.
