I think he's still working hard on securing traditional recruits, but his activity in the transfer portal is pathetic. However, I think the bigger issue is allowing himself/the program to be held hostage by "players first" and his unwillingness to adjust to changes in the game.

Jackass who resists obviously needed change, since it essentially proves he was wrong, and it's crystal clear, he'd rather lose than be wrong and have his delicate ego bruised.

See his track record with the 45+ NBA players who have came thru the Couch Cal turnstiles with 1 title to show for it.

Coaching malpractice 101.

"Mailing it in" to me means he isn't trying. I think he is trying to win...but his loyalty to players costs the program at times. This offseason is a perfect example. We miss on HD and KJ in large part because of the shadow of Oscar, Antonio, and Chris possible return.

Eventually, the roster will be filled out...probably with one or two returning players and one or two portal players. Make no mistake...the core of next season will be the FR...for better or worse.

Last season we were a 2 seed. Only 4 teams did better. And we did it with 2 players. So yes, Cal's recruiting and payer evaluation suffered for 3 years. That's been corrected. Wallow in the last 3 years all you want. The world is moving on.

Idk let's see how the roster looks once the season starts. Right now I seem tobe scratching my head. Like why did Ware transfer, do we have a NIL problem.

I don't think so at all. I just think his recruiting tailed off for the most part. Lazy asst hires didn't help off or on the court.

Not excusing anything, I just don't think it was from "mailing it in".

Pretty sure we were a 6 seed and lucky to be that.

Keep defending. Cal loves you. You are not a Bennie and he really appreciates the support. Even though he is failing miserably.

I think Cal works extremely hard to accomplish what he feels his job is. Think he's just been doing what he's always told us his priorities are. Stopped trying to hide it after 2012. He's essentially an NBA agent being paid by the University of Kentucky.
And that pi$$es me off to no end.

Every one of those players would have been drafted if they had never known JVC.

Cal wants to win as bad as anyone, problem is others have found ways to change and beat him, he seems a little resistant to change. Hopefully this year we actually can run the dribble drive after the weave.
But you can't keep saying "he wants to win as bad as anyone"....it's all just feelings/words but not reality.

- When you are loyal to certain kids/guarantees of playing time...then winning wasn't as high as relationships
- When you're never playing guys like Livingston at PF and solely on the perimeter....then winning wasn't as high

- So Duke just took guys back on the current roster and when Mgbako didn't like it...they cut him loose and winning for Duke took priority over a kids NBA aspirations.
-Kansas played Jaylen Wilson, Agbaji and Christain Braun at the SG, SF and PF spots last year...but all are NBA SF. But they played small ball for stretches and won a title.
- Guys like Roach and Flipkowski can come back to Duke when they are tweeners for high NBA picks....doesn't happen much at UK.

None of those things happen at UK under Cal. So I don't want to hear "he wants to win as bad as anyone"....his clear priority is players first to the detriment of the program.

Pretty much spot on. No argument to be made with any of those points.

I do think his handling of Boston and Askew most definitely cost the team some wins. I'm not a Wheeler hater, but I think Cason should've had the point from the get go. Hell, look at last season when Wheeler missed a game - TyTy came in and recorded 17 assists in the game.

I know wins/titles matter. But the program isn't sexy anymore. It's not the "gold standard", and that's just the truth. Yep, Bam and Murray will be headlining the NBA finals. But will that help UK?

Are you willing to bet that we'll be a 2 seed or better this year? I'd be willing to bet that we'll be a 6 seed or lower.

The entire college basketball world either has or is passing Calipari by.
From his antiquated approach to offense to his terrible in game decisions. Now we are starting to see him fail at getting quality guys out of the portal. Whether it be his refusal to guarantee NIL money or just the fact that he hasn't been very successful on the floor since 2019....things are changing.
Remember the anonymous comments early last season from other SEC coaches about how Calipari/UK is easy to prepare for and defeat?

IMO he has been coasting to varying degrees since the "lifetime contract" was signed. With that kind of security he has become even more determined to do things "his way" and prove everyone wrong. Well, it's backfiring on him, the program and fans.
Ever wonder why you don't see any of his former or current staff mentioned for any of the big time programs jobs when they become available? His system is outdated and the perception is that his assistants would bring the same flawed approach with them. Miss just hired a guy who was fired for allegedly abusing his wife! So, a wife abuser (allegedly) is more appealing than anyone on UK's staff? That alone should tell you everything you need to know about Calipari's coaching tree.

He may have once been a hot commodity but, those days are over. People have figured him out. He has to have 3-4 of the most elite recruits available and then surround them with talented role players who would be stars on any other team. The days of Calipari being able to assemble teams like that are over.

You don't even know what year it is lol. We were a 6 seed last season. We can't take anything you say seriously.

I don't think Cal has a real clear idea of what he is doing. I believe the job, his early success vs his failures in the past 3 years have devoured him. His ego won't allow him to admit it even to himself. He doesn't want to be here but doesn't know how to get out.

I don't think there is any chance he can regain a sense of direction here. He needs to step away from coaching and figure out who he is and where his life goes from this point forward.

I think he's scared to go anywhere else now. He's focused more on getting kids paid than doing his actual job. Now that his legacy is coming into focus for him, he's realizing that if he can't win at Kentucky, how is current Cal going to win anywhere ekse to repair his legacy? He's def done this to himself by just simply not prioritizing what he was paid multi-millions to do.

I don’t think that’s actually a UK fan. Join date, post history doesn’t add up.

I’m starting to believe the new thing for trolls on here is to pose as a UK fan and defend Calipari because 1, he’s not very good anymore and 2, they know we hate it.

Cal is making tubby look better and better by the day.
Tubby never missed a tournament...

If he hadn't shit the bed against UAB, his story may have been drastically different...

Never missed the tournament and never lost in the first round.

Even when Cal was killing it the program still had a lower floor under Cal(2013 NIT). Back then it just had a higher ceiling.

Now it has a lower floor(2021) and i’m not sure we don’t have a lower ceiling as well now. Tubby’s ceiling seemed to be an E8 once all of the Pitino holdovers were gone and it was his program.

I’m to a point where i’m not even sure Cal has an E8 run in him anymore.

And like Doc pointed out, unless we get some more guys quick next season is going to be ugly.

Only coach that had to deal with Covid AND injuries. Other coaches had more talent to soften those hits though. A HOFer, truly.
Covid affected young teams greatly. Name another coach that had three string guards injured and was forced to play one injured. PF is extraordinarily painful. Yiu can approximate it by stabbing yourself in the bottom of the foot with a butcher knife and running a few miles. Except for the blood it’s quiet excruciating.

I did a face palm, head shake and sigh simultaneously. Well done.

Dude!!! I was talking figuratively about the pain emulation.

Regarding the impact of CoVID and injuries, sorry. I know those facts don’t fit well with the hater talking points. Unfortunately his superiors won’t over look those very relevant facts. Sorry to get in the way of your vendetta.
