I’ll be honest, I thought he was being absurd when I just glanced at the headline, but after reading the whole thing, he may have a valid complaint. For those of you like me who didn’t initially read the details, St. John’s is trying to fire him for cause over alleged academic problems within the program, which would leave them off the hook for his buyout. Anderson alleges that these supposed problems were only brought up after he refused to take less of a buyout than his contract entitled him to. We’ll see what comes out in court if they don’t settle, but his claims aren’t that unbelievable. They were rumored to be in on Pitino for weeks if not months before actually hiring him, and it had nothing to do with a brewing academic scandal.
I do think he’s overreaching by asking for another $32.4 million in addition to his original buyout number though. That’s a pretty crazy number.
