I got down to the third post and stopped reading...
"This UK team reminds me of their NIT team. A lot of hype and talent coming in, but just not the one stud they usually have that puts them over the top."
Yep, that one is ridiculous. Another poster a bit further down agreed with him.
But just looking at that statement with logic (I know, logic is out the window with those guys), the first thing you have to look at is returning players.
Returning players
The 2012-13 team had Jarod Polson, Twany Beckham, Kyle Wiltjer, and Jon Hood returning who actually played minutes the previous year.Only one of those guys played any key minutes the previous season- Wiltjer.
This team has Alex Poythress, Marcus Lee, Tyler Ulis, Dominique Hawkins, Derek Willis, and EJ Floreal. This team has a clear advantage.
Point Guard (Everyone knows the floor leader is critical)
The 2012-13 team had Ryan Harrow, the NC State transfer. He was hyped and did have some skill, but his mental state was questionable. Polson was his backup and was the hero in several different games that season.
This team has Tyler Ulis, a guy who played key minutes in every game last season, all the way to the Final Four. His ability is proven and unquestioned. Backing him up, UK has Briscoe and Murray, only the 2 best point guards in the class. There is no comparison.
Front Court
The first comparison should be obvious- Alex Poythress as a senior or as a freshman, which would you prefer? Now, Nerlens Noel was a stud defensively, without question, but he was very raw offensively. Cauley-stein wasn't ready for prime time that season. These were athletes without much skill. The best offensive frontcourt player was Kyle Wiltjer, who was basically trying to carry the offensive load for that team, inside and out.
This team has a mature Alex Poythress and a mature Marcus Lee and has added a skilled freshmen in Labissiere and Humphries. All of these guys have the ability to score the ball, in addition to playing excellent defense. 2012-13 was probably a better shot blocking team, but this one can defend and score. The upperclassmen can do the dirty work here while the freshman plays his game. This team is clearly better.
Wings
The 2012-13 had grad transfer Julius Mays and freshman Archie Goodwin on the wings. It also had Alex Poythress trying to play the 3 and the 4 at different times, and we all found out he's not a 3. Mays likely wasn't intended to be a starter, but that's where he ended up. Archie Goodwin was a very talented athlete but he was sloppy with the ball and inconsistent with his shooting and effort.
This team has multiple options on the wing. Isaiah Briscoe and Jamal Murray are top 10 players. Matthews was underrated due to injury as a recruit and has a 44in vertical to add to his 6-9 wingspan. Mulder is an excellent athlete in his own right and is a proven shooter. Murray may be the best guard UK has had since Brandon Knight. He has deceptive quickness and finds ways to score. He has court vision and instincts of Wall with the shooting ability of Lamb. He's a transcendent talent, in my opinion. And Briscoe is a guy who would likely be the talk of the class if not for Murray and Skal. He's a top 10 pg in his own right and has trimmed his fat and become quicker. His ability to get to the rim is truly special. Add it all up and, once again, this year gets the clear edge.
Bottom line, the only way you could compare this year's team with 2012-13 would be without looking any further than a roster list.
#1 Both teams have a transfer (Mays and Mulder)
#2 Both teams have a sophomore pg (Harrow and Ulis)
#3 Both teams have a highly rated but thin freshman starter at center (Noel and Labissiere)
But the comparisons stop right there. If a person didn't look further than a roster list, they could make that statement. But those who have actually done their homework (or even watched an exhibition) would know better. It's a poor comparison.
