Totally vomit worthy interview. Wants to hide and say no one can be paid because it would eliminate all other sports. Talks about paying people being untenable because of title 9.

Is visibly nervous and uncomfortable during the whole monologue.

Does not mention athletes getting paid off their likeness, because that’s his biggest fear. He knows the NCAA contracts diminish in value when the sponsors can go directly to the source.

UK Athletics employs an AD who makes nearly $1 million a year. This AD has consistently given internal promotions to the point where UK now employs somewhere in the neighborhood of 26 assistant/associate/executive AD’s. Many of these employees make six figures. Many other colleges follow the same internal template. This is on top of the outrageous salaries the coaches make. There’s not enough money to go around? Okay.

I don't defend him on much but he's right on this one. The Olympic model is the only one that would work. The women's national soccer team is suing to be paid the same as the men because we all know that they are just as good as the men.I bet they win too.

It wouldn’t change the underlying problem that it’s a multibillion dollar industry where admins and people like Emmert are making millions on top of millions for a product they do not contribute to.
I dislike the NCAA, but you need to research what you're saying.

He doesn’t mention the Olympic model though—that is, people can be paid off their likeness and retain their amateur status.

That model really is the answer but Emmert wants to make it a binary question—“do the schools pay the players or not?” Obviously the answer there almost has to be no, and thus the status quo remains. Which is his motive, to change nothing and keep the dollars in his and his buddies pockets and away from the kids

I’m sorry, what do I need to research? That Emmert, and admins, and ADs all make millions off the backs of the product these kids create? Pretty sure that’s a fact.

People in those positions were making millions long before one and done, so maybe it’s not me that needs to do some research

What's wrong with employing people. All those families that are affected by the jobs created. So much money goes into insurance, legal, and administration. Ever throw an event? Multiply that by 1000...we as fans want a great product it takes a lot of individuals to create this.
Players have the right to own their likenesses. Open market system rules should apply.
It needs to be well thought out.

I sure wish I had earned a free ride for tuition, room and board, medical care and the best training money can buy. I agree let them go straight to NBA, but, paying players needs to remain for the Professional athlete only.

It’s a multi BILLION dollar industry. Prohibition of paying the players doesn’t stop payments, it drives them underground (as we’ve seen).

If a kid can get a contract with Nike for a few commercials, let him get one. It’s happening right now but you are forcing people to choose between supporting their families and potentially destroying their careers.

The kids are risking their livelihood playing for these schools, injuries happen you know, and they leave those schools with nothing to show for it while people like Emmert are filthy rich off the games those kids play. It’s a farce.

I am a conservative so I have no issues with employing people or giving them raises. And you are right, it takes a village to run an athletic department. I’m just sick and tired of Emmert and college AD’s pretending like there’s not enough money to go around and that they need to cut sports to make paying players a reality. I keep bringing up Mitch because I live in Lexington and know a lot of people connected to UK Athletics. He pays freaking Edrick Floreal $250K a year. A track coach that runs a program that loses money every single year! So yeah, I believe players should be able to profit off their image and likeness, and that administrators who profit handsomely off college kids should quit kicking the can down the road. College athletics has become so political these days, everyone is more worried about protecting their own little nest rather than doing the right thing.

Let me be the first to say, there's no one who despises the NCAA more than I do. With that being said, if they ever started paying these players that would be the end of college sports. A few things to think about if this ever happened:

Most football teams have anywhere from 80-100 players on a roster. Think about how much money that would be trying to pay all those players.

I know football and basketball bring in the most money and ratings but if they got paid then all other athletes of the other sports would have to start getting paid also: baseball, women's basketball, softball, hockey, swimming, etc.

These athletes do get paid. They get free housing, free books, free meals at any time of the day, free traveling, get to skip class to play ball. I'd say there's also the possibility some coaches would have to take pay cuts, and so on.

These kids have a life in college most of us could only dream of. In my opinion this would be a terrible decision if it were to ever happen.

Does Floreal make 250k, is this an April fool's day joke....

Dead on the money. These ADs and admins biggest job is maintaining the status quo. It’s telling there is not one “visionary” AD at any major school speaking out about the Olympic model. It would cut the college’s money in half and they are too self-preserving for that.

The onus is on the coaches. They need to always be competitive. One bad season and you are fired. Really 250k? Just checked, 240k...but you failed to mention he was an Olympic coach and came from one of the winningest track and field programs at stanford.
You want to have the best you have to pay a premium. He is director of all track and field, both men and woman. He isn't a coach...

And 98% goes back to the schools to pay for all of the non revenue sports. Like I said change the rules where a player can go straight to the pros but other than that live off the Pell Grant and college stipend they are now getting. Somehow they find enough money to pay for thousands of dollars in tattoo's. I am not opposed to them signing autographs or even doing commercials if the money is distributed equally to all team members.

So keep the scholarship system in place. Colleges owe $0 more than they do today.

If a company wants to offer a contract for likeness (in most cases these would be very small deals) then let them do it.

No title 9 issues, no funding issues, and the game would go on just like it does in the olympics.

I’m not a socialist so I don’t believe in distributing everything evenly. It should be a merit based system.

Pretty sure they do find money for those tattoos...wonder where that comes from? Maybe the kids get a paper route.......

It’s the status quo but I think a lot of people would love a position where they make a quarter million to lose a ton of money for their business and not succeed in any quantifiable way
I didnt realize UK was a for profit school.

I am not a Socialist either, about as far from it as a person can be. I just think what they currently get is payment enough if they have the opportunity to go Pro out of HS, but, I do believe everybody on team who contributes to their success either in practice or the games should get a equal piece of the pie while they are amateurs.

You start paying men's basketball more than women's, or any other sport, and watch the social justice warriors come out of the woodwork with the discrimination lawsuits.

Let them go straight out of high school. Leave the spot at the school for someone who wants an education.

These kids, like the one going to the g league, couldn’t care less about an education so why even bother. Take your 25k a year and 7 hour bus rides and best of luck to you.

Private contracts will not create those type of lawsuits. Pay from public institutions would.

Dont tell anyone but on top of a scholarship, elite coaching, elite facilities to train, room and board, books, every meal taken care of, most planned by a nutritionist and prepared by professionals, these athletes get paid too. UK athletes get nearly $900 a month paid to them a month each semester. On top of that the get a per diem for meals while on the road, a clothing fund (they didnt pay for the suits you see them wearing), and they also get paid to "work" all the camps and clinics the coaches have which usually consists of them showing up and being seen. These poor exploited athletes... go to bed hungry and cant afford to take their girlfriends to a movie, LOL.

A genius computer engineer doesn’t need an education in world history or basket weaving.

A genius basketball players doesn’t need liberal arts.

The education piece should be confined to the place (or places) you intend to become a professional.

We used to have people who were paid living necessities to generate millions in wealth for their bosses. They were called slaves. We fought a war over it.

If they pay players, do you really think it will be merit based? How long until Title IX principles are applied where all players playing a sport at an entity get paid an equal amount? Now the possibility of negotiating deals outside the NCAA for their likeness may be viable but you think Nike and others are steering players to a certain school now—then just wait. There is no easy answer here. You will likely end up with a very small group of power schools for football (much smaller than now) and that is the moneymaker.

I actually think it would level the playing field in some ways.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant. Right now, the field is slanted toward the nefarious characters who are willing to operate outside the rules and lie about it. If you bring the endorsements out in the open, it creates a free market system and everyone can participate.

Does it benefit the bigger schools more? Of course. But the bigger schools and traditional powers are already at that type of advantage

Well slaves didnt have a choice, not a single slave signed up for it. Slaves were forcibly taken from their families without ever seeing them again, children were taken from their mothers and fathers, they were beaten, raped, and murdered. Kevin Knox lives a slightly better life than that, comparing college athletes to slaves is moronic.

Ridiculous statement. Not one player is forced to do a damn thing. Don’t like college go play somewhere else. Blame the pro sports leagues for not creating an opportunity of pay for play for kids who don’t like the college system. Why doesn’t Someone else duplicate what the NCAA created that is so appealing to the market since nobody but the athlete created this product. If it is so easy, why hasn’t someone created a viable alternative?

Just make it two or none and end the whole pay for play thing. You won't be able to pay sports like gymnastics or the douche gay lacrosse team like pukes. You pay one student athlete you have to pay them all. To end it just make it two or none and then it will end this garbage. Will some still slip through the cracks? Sure. But if you let the kids go that need it let them leave after highschool

UK won’t be in that select group of football schools FYI. And basketball is not the moneymaker so UK will be harmed.

What alternative does a kid have who grew up poor, had a bad education, and excels at basketball? McDonald’s?
