Duke 34 FTs, Auburn Nine - Seems Fair!

Yeah, maybe an FBI probe is warranted for free throw disparity.

Free throws...
Kentucky 35
VMI 5

That was 100% fair. When team shot a lot of 3s like VMI and Auburn they draw fewer fouls. Always have, always will.

They didn't need a lot of freethrows, they absolutely slaughtered us at the three point line.

Just for reference, let's look at 2014/15 Kentucky, another physically dominant and fast team. A team you'd expect to draw a ton of fouls and not commit many, right?

In Kentucky's first 10 games:

Never shot more than 34 ft's in a game.
Only 2 of the 10 opponents shot less than 10 fts, and those schools were low-majors.
4 games Kentucky commited equal to, or more fouls than the opponent.
Only 2 games (same two teams) did Kentucky have an obvious free throw advantage.

And Duke didn't play Appalachian St. They played top10 Auburn.

Face it, Coach K has spent his career blasting refs and working the NCAA to the point that he's always worth a handful of extra fouls, at least.

Dukes talent combined with their insane whistle is why they're a threat to be undefeated.

Our nearly undefeated team lost with Higgins making every bad call imaginable. Including the basket two seconds after the shot clock expired.

Meanwhile duke has three players. They'll never see foul trouble. Even though one plays like a bull in a China shop

I watched the last 2 minutes and saw Zion trip
a guy and a clear flagrant foul that wasn’t called.

Just looking at free throw differential can certainly be misleading. But that's only the case when one team is severely outmatched, or one team plays some type of gimmick offense/defense.

When two teams are relatively close in talent (and this was two top 10 teams) there should never be that type of difference. Duke is a great team. But college basketball may as well be the WWE this year. It's scripted.

The game has seen nothing but bad publicity for a year. They are going to make it all go away -- or at least try -- by having the Golden Boy go undefeated and dominate the headlines all year.

Auburn got smacked on the arm all night. I don’t like either team and It was pissing me off at the way they let DUKE foul them The Whole game. I even cussed a time or two and gave a few “bullshits”, at the tv. Haha. Auburn played good though and they will take a lot from this game. It’s still amazing how the refs have their guys. Ohh well. Lol.

No that's just not true at all.

Getting to the line is a skill. Just like shooting, rebounding etc.

Not fouling on defense is also a skill.

Just because two teams are even in talent and even overall (tho lets be honest here Auburn isn't even close right now to that team although they played them as close as anyone has this season), doesn't mean that the free throw disparity needs to be near even.

Who said anything about near even? It was 34-9. It was 18-0 at half. Duke shot nearly 4 times as many FTs as Auburn. Auburn made 4 more FGs overall and 4 more 3s than Duke. The rebounding was within 5. Auburn had more assists. Auburn had 4 less turnovers. Everything about that game screamed a fairly even matchup, except that one thing you can't control -- the whistle.

Again some teams get to the line and others do not.
FWIW Auburn hasn't gone to the line much in any of the games they have played this season.

And Auburn has more experience in this game. I get that Duke's athleticism is a shock to them, but what, they all just forgot how to play defense?

And what about Duke? Freshman learning to play the college game all the sudden know how to defend without committing fouls.

Duke gets the benefit of the doubt, on both ends of the court, always.

I mean Jesus christ.. we've seen this for YEARS now. It's laughed about on sports sites. There's even the term "Duke Call".

Couldn't watch this game, working on a project that requires an overnight. But it appears several Duke players committed some egregious fouls that went unnoticed.

The fact that some are still so blind to it is comical. Maybe they’re just being difficult. Or they really are just blind.

The_Answer is a very smart poster. He knows the game. And in some ways, yes, Duke should have more FTs than Auburn. Physical teams draw more fouls, and Pearl's teams can sometimes be aggressive on defense.

But this just happens far too often. Every year it's the same thing: Duke knows how to somehow defend without fouling, and 8%5 of opposing teams somehow forget to. It doesn't matter if it's a bunch of experience shooters or athletic freshman for Duke. Same story, every year.

A lot of it is Coach K's clout. We'll see what happens when he leaves and an unproven coach comes on board. I get the feeling players are going to be surprised at how easily fouls are called.

one team drove the ball and attacked the rim and the other jacked 3s like their dicks would fall off if they didn't.

That foul discrepancy usually happens.
