Another very good apocalyptic novel in the vein of The Road is Peter Heller's The Dog Stars.
Very good novel.
And yet another one in that vein is just out: Holly Goddard-Jones's The Salt Line. The author is a Kentuckian. There's a great scene in this from inside an abandoned Cracker Barrel. To say too much of the plot would ruin it but all you need to know is that it's about ticks.
