Dan Hurley

UConn was horrible when he took that job. Kevin Ollie left him in a tough situation.

I get that. But, I would rather we wait and see what he does for a few more years first. If he continues to show something, then yeah I would be on board. But, right now he is the flavor of the month. BTW, we've seen a ton of posts wanting DANNY!! Anyone who follows his coaching should know he would be a disaster here. Elizabeth would be a better hire, as someone said.

First of all i’d like to say if Hurley wanted to come here today you take that trade no questions asked. He’s 14 years younger than Cal and is fresh off a national title.

But, Hurley was pretty underwhelming until this season. This was his 13th season as a head coach. He’s made the tournament 5 times. He was 2-4 in his previous 4 appearances. He had a 25 win and a 26 win season at rhode island and those were his 2 best seasons before this year.

Again, would i take him over Cal right now? Without hesitation. But that’s not saying much But there are at least a few other coaches out there i’d take a chance on before Hurley.

Hopefully we get the chance to try. I’m afraid Cal will get another lifetime deal after 2028, and we will miss out on the good younger coaches.
If Cal has the season that I think he’s going to have his tenure is about to come to an end regardless of the buyout price it will be negotiated down. We won’t have him past the next couple years.

He can win more national titles by staying at UCONN than coming here.
No he couldn't. And it took him 5 years there. The Cal hate cult would turn into the Hurley hate cult faster than night turns into day. He's falling off back to nothing next season. The Cal Hate Cult will find another coach to idolize. Rinse and repeat.

There is no Cal hate cult. There's only widespread consensuses that Calipari is past his expiration date in Lexington. I do like the fact that you appropriated the term we created for posters like you who are either here to troll (like you are) or here as a last remnant of delusional loyalists.

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

While I tend to agree (re: Pitino) what we've seen happen under Cal does make me at least question in Rick would have won more. I don't think he wins in '98 like Tubby did. Rick also showed eventually that he was capable of making horrific decisions (what he did at Louisville).

I don't think many would have correctly predicted what has happened with Cal after say, 2017.
Rick had it made here at Kentucky and now here he is in his 70s trying to repair his reputation.

I am not taking sides in this debate but I do think it is interesting that the word "cult" is applied to groups that resent that word. Have you or anyone ever heard of a particular group admit that they are a cult? As far as I know, the word cult is always "them" and never "us."

Cal will NEVER negotiate down his buyout.

He has Mitch and UK by the balls and he knows it.

Agree. I guess all I'm saying is as likely as it was that he would have continued success nothing is guaranteed. To steal a line from Chevy, "If I woke up with my head sewn to the carpet I wouldn't be more surprised than I am now" in regards to Cals metoric drop.

Yeah I know exactly what you mean. Hopefully the slump ends this coming season

That’s definitely a huge factor but KY is still KY. They move the needle good or bad.
How much longer will "KY is still KY" be a reality at the rate our program is falling down the ladder of top programs.

Players today don't even remember 2012, let alone know anything about our history.

We are quickly becoming an afterthought or secondary option for being considered a top tier program.

No Hurley’s here. Just ask Laettner to coach us!
If they’ll win titles and prioritize constructing college teams and playing guys in the roles that their skill are currently best suited for instead and attempting to showcase a raw potential for their future employer by playing them out of position at the college level….then I don’t care if they are from Duke or Indiana or Saudi Arabia. The UNIVERSITY of Kentucky’s Head Coach’s PRIMARY goal should be to win National COLLEGIATE Athletic Association basketball games and titles.

Everything else is fine and dandy to care about and want the best for kids as a side quest and personal goals…but their professional goals should align with who writes their paycheck. Players future success is largely irrelevant to the University outside of theoretically giving a recruiting boost but that has proven to have minimal impact in College success over the last 15 years when compared to schools who took the roster building, transfers w 2 years left, and occasional 5 start route the results are a push at best. High School recruiting mattered a lot more when players were likely to stay 2-3 years other than the top 10 picks. In todays NIL and Free Agent environment and 1 year sexond rounders leaving….HS recruiting titles are essentially less meaningful than a Helms Banner.

The wheels are coming off the Calipari train at a alarming rate. Now he can't recruit the transfer portal and options are severely limited if Reeves and Oscar do not return. The vaunted top recruiting class Calipari has assembled may be wasted if they all have to play 35-40 minutes per game.
Surely there is a guy out there who can better construct and manage a roster than that?
If that guy is Hurley or Drew or Vogel....I'm ready to give them a shot!

The arguments defending him are getting more and more mind numbing too.

There are a handful of posters on HoB that are really trying to convince us there’s nothing wrong with not being able to fill 13 scholarships at the premier basketball program in division 1.

It’s May 23rd, and we have 7 scholarship players committed to play for us next season and there are supposed UK fans defending that. That absolutely blows my mind. I’m sitting here wondering if we got put on probation or hit with some kind of sanctions and i missed it. Nope. I’m told this is fine, it’s normal.

The Calicultists will arrive soon to say that Hurley wouldn't leave UConn for UK. To them, UK is a trash program and not the type that a coach at UConn would want to go to. They'll also argue that we should just be grateful that we have a coach who hasn't turned us into Indiana yet.

To them, there is no UK standard.
To be clear, what is the UK standard? Seriously curious, nobody has ever quantified it or said what it would be to live up to it. If you could put it in the next coach's contract what would your performance expectations be?

Those people who believe we are in a good spot are delusional.
Heck, w can't even have a five on five scrimmage without asking some former players to suit up.
Calipari has always fallen short of filling out the roster while at UK. But, this is something really nuts!

* You know, watching Rajon Rondo school some of the freshmen would be hilarious though. LOL!

Well, unfortunately we still have a coach, so I agree.
And there-in lies the problem with Cal's lifetime contract.

If Cal stays 6 more years, and I believe he will, over that time period Kansas will make their next hire, UNC more than likely will have to move on from HD, UL will move on from KP, Duke could possibly make a coaching change if the new dude continues to struggle.

And, no telling how many other top programs will be hunting for a NC caliber coach.

And our coaching situation will resemble our current player/transfer portal situation. We will be sitting around squirming with our thumbs up our butts wondering what Cal will do while other schools hire for their future.

One thing we can all agree on, Cal is not a longterm remedy for the future as the coach of UK basketball.

That problem needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.

It appears that Mitch is content with he and Cal both riding out this absurd contract, both departing at the same time, while leaving the basketball program on rock bottom.

Someone needs to step in and relieve them both if MB refuses to address our issues with the basketball program under Cal.
