Ok. It's 1988, you'e got your ghost busters ghost packs and ninja turtle sewer set while watching pre-insanity espn. Breaking news.......Pat Riley accepts UK head coaching job.

In this scenario he stays until 2020. Pitino never happened. Cal never happened.

Would you risk it all and redo history if given the opportunity today? Or let it be?

Man I’m gonna risk it and give me Riley. Pat Riley is pitino and cal infused into one human being. Riley would’ve had Cal’s swagger and recruiting efforts along with Pitino’s ability to make a team fuse together and get after it.

And the slicked back hair with mafia connections haha Riley would be The Godfather at UK.

It would be crazy to think about. Really wish Riley had wanted the college game.

He did some pretty amazing things in the NBA as a coach and in the front office. Coached some of the all time greats and help pull Lebron to Miami. Riley would’ve been ahead of the curb in college no doubt.

Wait, Pitino didn't exist, and Cal didn't exist.....but you didn't say anything about Tubby and Billy. Is this a trick question? [roll]

I think it changes too much to know for sure. There's no Pitino, so there's no Donovan or Tubby. There's no Cal.

But you also have him here for over 30 years. That's rare. I think we can assume that means no scandals, probations, disastrous seasons, etc.

Basically it's do you think Pat Riley would win more than 3 titles in 30 years at Kentucky.

I'll say no. More than three has been done very, very, few times and if it's just a push, that means we don't come out any further ahead plus we lose out on the fun of seeing Pitino at Louisville.

But damn what if Pat reeled off like, 12 titles in 30 years? Possible? Maybe?
I bet he would have won at least 3. Especially if you’re telling me he lasted that long as coach. With our expectations, that would mean at minimum 2 with some FFs mixed in there. Still, too risky for me. I’ll take the run we had and thank the sports Gods I lucked into being a fan of the GOAT college basketball program.

Are you bored Morg.? Just kidding actually a good thread. You ask one hell of a question, because I have always liked Riley. In the end I would keep things the same, because of Cal and that's the only reason. Without him I would vote Yes in a heartbeat. I know there would have been no Cal, but just can't get past knowing we got Cal. Damn, now I'm confused Dad Gumit Morg.

Very bored. Was between this and porn hub.

He would have been 42/43 years old, coming off NBA titles in 85 and 87 (won another in 88) and would have been a coach in the NBA All Star Game the 3 prior years (85, 86 and 87). He was a rock star at that time and the Lakers were the "it" team of the moment back then (Magic, Kareem, Worthy, etc.).

It's difficult to recall much from that far back, but I can certainly see where this would have qualified as a "home run" hire at the time. I agree with the above statement that if he stayed from 88 until now, we're talking about a 30 year run at UK-- you don't last that long in Lexington unless you are consistently successful, so that is a legitimate consideration.

My only real concern would be what it would have cost to hire him and if his persona at the time may have been too big for a college program-- even one like UK.

'88 is when Riley coined the phrase "three-peat" at the Lakers' championship parade. The '87 and '88 Lakers were one of the very best repeat champs in NBA history.

1988 is also when the shit started hitting the fan at UK. So year one would be Kentucky Shame. Next two seasons would be probation, no post season, and no television.

If he makes it to 2020 under those circumstances, I would think he was doing well for himself. Would he have gotten 3 chips in that time though? Me thinks not, since only Calhoun and K equaled or eclipsed that tally in that time frame.

If he stays that long I would take it in a New York minute,32 years means he did something right. In addition to no Pitino and no Cal we have no Tubby and no G.It is an interesting thought,a direct link to Coach Rupp that lasts 32 tears, sure it would have been a different style of basketball but the story line of 85 years connected to the man that built the UK program. would be historic.

Pat Riley for 32 years at Kentucky? Hell yes. He was taught by the master and may be the greatest coach to play for Adolph Rupp. Your dang right I take him for 32 years. To stay at Kentucky for 32 years means you have multiple titles and you kept the program clean. The only thing I would change is I would want him when Joe B retired. No Eddie Sutton, no Tubby Smith, No Billy Clyde.

Folks this a non brainer to end all non brainers. Pat Riley would not fail.

Riley for 32 years--absolutely.

More than 3 ncaa Titles--no 12 year destruction--no sutton--no peeboy---.

Rupp and Riley--the 2 greatest in ncaa history--since woodencheater does NOT COUNT!! he cheated!!

32 year of pat Riley as uk head coach??? Ratface who??

Riley would be ace recruiter and one of the best nba coaches of alltime. He coulda won 10 championships at uk who knows ?

Tough question as we've had a lot of fun with Cal's Era which is nowhere close to finished. But, with Riley's basketball IQ, the fact he is a UK guy and that you're having him here for 30+ years I'm going to take a chance on Riley and that he would have won more titles during that time. He would have been a monster in the college game, I think.

The Louisville meltdown tips the scales for me. But I do think Riley would have won 3+ Titles.

In that time period K won 5 titles. I think Riley would have had a good shot of doing that or better. K owes a great deal of his success over the last twenty years to Pitino going to the Celtics.
