Crazy Billy Gillispie stories...

Heard it happened but wasn't there. You think I could make that up, a little prickly aren't you.
IMO is habit only so I would say I heard that story and believe it to be true but was not present if you are asking for such detail.
It was a little confusing with the IMO thrown in at the very end. With some of the other pop culture/fictional references in this thread I wondered if I was missing another one.

Don't think he was being prickly

When BCG was hired I got a call from former supervisor in Champaign. He told me BCG was a drunk womanizer that would not last more than two years. His son turned down a job here because BCG was not stable. I passed this along and was trashed. I was shocked anyway as I wanted Cal. 2009 was so fine.

I remember someone posting on another board that the A&M adminstration was celebrating after Gillispie left - the administration was actually relieved that we had hired him away. At the time I just thought it was butthurt A&M fans doing their best Zipp impersonation

You have to wonder how many banners would be hanging if MB had gone with Cal from the start. IMHO,
he was clearly the man for the job.

I believe boosters along with Pratt and company forced MB's hand to hire Cal, if solely left to MB, Mike Brey would have been hired.

I remember Matt Jones saying that Rick Barnes (yes I know the running joke about him) was on the short list with Mitch.

I also remember Mike D'Antoni was interested in the job but I don't think the timing was right (memory is fuzzy on this)

Actually its great that Cal did not come till 2009. The Derrick Rose thing would have happened here and who knows what might have happened. Those 2 BCG years were actually worth it because we got Cal at the perfect time because the class that started everything here was going to Memphis at the time and that's when Cals recruiting really took off.

i have to admit how sad it looks now, but at least it crashed and burned quick. getting chased down the hall and then the jokes about him being spotted drinking somewhere on new circle road. there were actually some hilarious threads on here during that time. i guess it was cathartic. there were some happy players regarding the news too. we were all happy to see him go, but he went down so hard you wondered if he'd make it. he's basically been out of the public eye since then.

This thread shows how much of a Cancer BCG really was. I've only heard about 25% of these stories so the others are icing on the cake. I'd love to see him make a return trip to Lexington to be tarred and feathered. Especially the way he treated Miller and Jasper(Who could've been a great basketball player)

I did sign up as a 16 year old which should tell you A) Im a true UK fan, B) Maybe why some posters on here act the way that they do.

Good for you, I bet you blow all your friends away with the insider knowledge you get on here.

GBB!

BCG's idea of bath time and good clean fun.

After a quick search, there's nothing about BG after his Texas Tech days. Anyone know what he's up to now? You know, other than the drinking and, uh, drinking...

I had pretty much blocked out these two years from my memory banks. Thanks a lot for bringing them up, guys. :boxing:

It's funny, but I had forgotten the biggest part of the game stuff. Like you said, blocked it out.

I was at the game when Meeks score 54, which was awesome. And I remember the University of Jodie Meeks. But I must have really stopped paying attention somewhere along the way while he was here.

Mike Brey was the man Mitch wanted.

One thing that find absolutely mind blowing is that since Rupp Arena opened in 1976, Kentucky is 529-64 in games played there. BCG lost 10 of those games in just 2 years. And these included losses to powerhouses like San Diego, Gardner-Webb and VMI. Horrendous!

I posted when he was hired that I had a guy ask around the Texas AM program on what they thought about him
He come back and said many women their hated him and he tried getting into the sack with just about any girl their that had 2 legs. He was constantly drunk all the time and that UK did not ask any of the administration about him at all. Said he was a ticking time bomb and they were lookin for ways to fire him and get out of their contract luckily UK swoop in and takes the problem off their hands. He treated the employees their as if they were crap on the bottom of his shoe and would curse them using very harsh language for no reason at all.

The last year he was here when we went to the NIT the whole team sans 2 guys were transferring or quiting. That's why he was giving out scholarships when we had none to give out at the time. Think their was a total of 17 guys at the time.

The firing of Billy G was done from higher ups with deep pockets. These guys tasked their own people in which Pratt was involved in to find a coach.

90% of the fans here wanted Billy G becsuse he beat Pitino in Rupp so he was their hero for some reason I dunno why.

Havnt seen anybody mention how he was a top notch recruiter because he drank Dr Pepper and ate crackers lmao.

Heard he liked 18yr old freshmen and bagged several of them. Woke up naked with a 17 yr old that was kept quite. Was told he passed out drunk in somebodies lawn chair and didn't know how he got their.
Bagged one of the players gf and tried to get a couple more.

I went to the LSU at Rupp and stayed after to get pictures and just to be down by the floor. I was waiting in line and a girl walked up to him and I was right next to them . She said I have (don't remember name) girl with me and he said just go see some guy in the back (sorry don't remember name) and he said that guy will let you in back there. They must have been hooking up to party after game...lol And of course they lost the game against LSU. It was on Feb 28th my birthday and LSU scored on a last second play.

The free throw block was so ridiculous. At random times I still think about it trying to figure out what was in his head. All this time and I still don't have a clue. I actually tried to find a video of it a few months back, but I couldn't find one. It seems as though it was so dumb, history has rejected it.

As much as i do not like her from a personal standpoint, i'd bet Sandy Bell would handle that situation much differently than Memphis did.

Even so take a look at the following class - in which he pulled Tyreke Evans.

Had he been here the year prior he probably adds JaMychal Green and Scottie Hopson to that class.

Add those 3 to PPat and Meeks, Miller and Liggins...

Definitely not NIT...

just googled "kentucky blocked free throw" and there's multiple videos in the top results

Here is what I have said about Gillispie for several years...his hiring was the best thing to happen for KY basketball in over a decade. Before you think I'm crazier than Billy G himself hear me out. Would Mitch have had the balls to hire Cal if he hadn't failed so miserably with the Bill G hire? I say no because he had the chance to hire Cal to replace Tubby but from all indications he didn't even consider it. So no Bill G = no Cal.
