Crazy Billy Gillispie stories...

You signed up for this site as a 16 year old?

Here you go:

When he was first hired, a UK booster invited BCG to Augusta National to play a round of golf. BCG accepted and then just stood up the other guys at the airport, no show, no call, nothing.

Screwed over the Rotary Club as well.

Practiced just as hard on game days as regular practices, 2 hours before tip off.

Freshman Darius Miller made a poor entry pass into the BEAST Pilgrim, BCG instructed Miller to post up and BCG took a rack of balls and fired fast balls at him at close range saying "COme on Darius", "Whats wrong Darius?"

Made Jorts dive for a basketball 75 times during an open media practice when he didnt dive for a ball during a drill.

Made Jorts sit in a bathroom stall during halftime of a Vandy game.

After the Vandy game he ordered Jos to ride back in the equipment van, however players AND parents resisted.

2009 SEC Tournament Darius Miller sprained his ankle, BCG thought he was being a wimp and told him to walk to the hotel, again the players stepped up and said they would walk with him.

So many more items.

His times at the Merrick restaurant.

Just a total idiot. Horrible, horrible hire.

Of course there was this idiotic interview:

And ending in this:

God, I remember watching both of those live and just thinking "what the hell??...." during both of them. But at least after "the chase" there was a sense of relief that it was all over.

A few more.....

Having Purry goal tend a free throw.

Signing a contract written on a napkin at a bar.

Repeated DUI.

Cancun Ballroom Tournament. They seriously had to tie back the chandeliers so that shots didn't hit them.

got me outta my seat:

^ couple fellers clearly don't get pop culture references.

Dude, if I'd have watched it previously I still wouldn't have got it, unless I had watched it a day or two ago. No "pop" in my culture. (I figured it was some sort of reference to something but still sounded as if some sauce was involved.)

I remember I always thought Galloway should have played more, look at the pic above, I mean at least he looks like a basketball player as opposed to... BCG would start a walk on like KY kid Sloan for 4 games straight, then bench him. Sloan started for UK, quit and then couldn't even get PT at Morehead state. Indiana players were laughing at us and saying no one on our squad could even dribble. it was that bad. Galloway should have played more.
I did a player average per 40 min that year & Galloway's was around 8 pts, 8 rb, 8 ast per 40 min. He was productive when he got a chance. I never could understand Porter, Harris, & Courier getting the amount of playing time that they did.

My roommate was a server at Merrick during the Billy G years. The story were endless, Billy is drunk and won't go home, Billy is drunk and slobbering on some whore, Billy is drunk and naked at the pool, Billy is trying to sleep with another one of the servers. It was unbelievable for a guy his age with that job. Knowing the operation the cooks were running I would be surprised if there wasn't a bit of cocaine thrown In the mix for good measure.

The Stevenson free throw block was a complete embarrassment.

Not sure if you can blame him on Cancun though

I think the craziest BCG story is simply how he recruited, even above all the drunkenness, chasing young girls less than half his age, and weird mistreatment of players. Remember, this is a coach that offered UK scholarship to guys like Dakotah Euton, Michael Avery, Konner Tucker, Vinny Zollo, GJ Vilarino, KC Ross Miller, etc. Now THAT'S crazy.

Seriously, we were at the Oxford inn during his second year. We travel to lots of away games and stay at the teams hotel. Every UK coach since Hall (he would actually allow fans into his room to talk) would mingle with the fans, be active around the hotels, and so on. We were stunned to find Gillispie locked in his room the entire time, and the players told us they weren't allowed to talk on game day. They looked miserable. When he finally stumbled out of his room, he smelled like a bottle of makers. We couldn't believe it. I was still in love with him at the time ( just glad he wasn't tubby).

I made a post on this on rafters and was crushed. I laughed and thought to myself "these idiots will see in time". A few months later everything broke, team was transferring, people were gonna be fired etc.

That's my Gillispie story, but there's many more.

I still stand behind my opinion Barnhart should have been removed from hirings after that. It was his guy, he hired him on his own, without anyone. It's no wonder the cal hire happened, as the right people made it happen. I still to this day don't believe Mitch is in charge of basketball, and from the looks of it, needs to be removed from football.

Gillispie is the single worst hire in this schools history by a long shot. Joker is one of the worst in football history. How does Mitch survive? I wish I could suck this badly at my job and survive.

The craziest story of all is he was hired as the head coach of the University of Kentucky Men's basketball team

Mitch didn't even come out of his robe and allowed no one access to the hiring. He was gonna " do it all himself, from his house".

I just don't see how anyone can defend the guy.

The incident where the reporter was chasing him, while he was talking on his phone or pretending to right after he was let go was amazing to me. That dude was just way over his head here, I am not going to totally blame the AD because on the surface Billy G looked like a rising star, but at the same time he didn't learn all these moves that has been mentioned in this thread overnight here at Kentucky.

Kentucky is not a job for training. You hire proven winners here, period. He gambled on Gillispie and probably thought he'd save money. Gillispie had already had a tough stint and a few run ins, we just didn't vet him properly. This stuff didn't just start at UK.

Who is Sloan?

I was on the Gillispie bandwagon until we lost to Miami in Rupp.

We all made light of him being a drunk and what not, but I never realized just how bad it was until I started talking to people who were seeing it first hand in Lexington.

The average fan isn't supposed to know these kind of details, however I'm sure Mitch had a BCG story on his desk every morning. Mitch should have nipped it in the bud but since BCG was his hire, Mitch let this drag on to the detriment of the players who had to deal with this psycho.

The senior night Georgia game in Rupp was basically their revolt. They had no interest in furthering the season with that man in charge.

The only time Goodman has been right about anything to do with UK... he went on KSR and said he thought it was a bad hire at the time.

does anyone really think Gillispie never coached a game drunk? 100% stone cold lock it happened, probably more than once.

I was around him multiple times, I never saw him stone cold sober. Not exaggerating. If there was alcohol available he had a drink in his hand.

I will say the really awful things he did to some of these kids had more to do with him as a person than his drinking. See A&M injured player and Canadian players schollies, see 15 kids leaving Texas Tech, etc.

I was there for the Georgia game. Still the worst environment I've ever seen at UK game...for any sport. When he pulled meeks, patterson, and the other few good players we had and put in coury, porter, sloan, etc only to see UGA come back and then take a 9 point lead. I sat close enough to the bench and remember hearing meeks begging him to go back in during the under 12 timeout, but they didn't go back in until about 7 minutes to go but by then, UGA was on fire and confident and UK was in shambles. UK lost, he did his blow-by handshake and as he walked off the floor people starting yelling, booing and some even threw nachos and their drinks at him. He didn't come out and do the post game show with tom. I think they had the show in the hallway. It was an awful awful scene and you could just tell it was over.

When BCG was hired I got a call from former supervisor in Champaign. He told me BCG was a drunk womanizer that would not last more than two years. His son turned down a job here because BCG was not stable. I passed this along and was trashed. I was shocked anyway as I wanted Cal. 2009 was so fine.

Cancun tournament was Cal's first year with Wall and company.

While Mitch has done great things, there is 1 thing that matters - UK basketball...you don't take chances and don't eff that up.

It was, without question, the absolute worst sourcing and reviewing process that could have possibly happened. You had legendary coaches very interested in this job, and Mitch said no we have to hire someone now can't wait...sorry but everything would have been fine waiting another few weeks to interview Izzo, and it would have be fine to consider Cal. And I could name 5 other coaches I'd talk to before even looking at Gillespie and no this isn't hindsight 20/20...I hated the hire from the start.

He's lucky Cal was still around to take it, since the program was in worst shape than when Tubby left.

All this being said, I will give Mitch as much credit for having the stones to fire him...many made it out as we are insane for firing someone after 2 seasons and that shows how rabid our fan base is and we won't give anyone enough time to establish their strategy. Other AD's would have stuck it out, and if it were anyone else as the coach Mitch probably would have too (like he did with Brooks). But BCG was his own worst enemy.

I was at that game and that douchebag didn't call one play all he did was stay in that stupid crouch stance he did the entire game even during timeouts.

side note I did not speak to my girlfriend the entire ride back to Ohio that night. Still the only time I witnessed the cats lose in person.

love that post from Galloway. haven't heard that story before and I'm so glad that Kevin decided to go see his son being born anyway. as a relatively new father myself I know he would have regretted missing that for the rest of his life

I'm telling you, Gillispie had some underlying mental condition. He was crazy as a shithouse rat. Hard to imagine he coached 2 of the biggest season to season improvements in NCAA history, at 2 different schools. The lights at Kentucky where way too bright for BCG.

That mansion he lived in or had, even though he did not live there and lived in hotel downtown. Well he goes back to mansion after a binge with a group of ladies and others to party a little late night at the mansion. They get there and no electricity, it had been shut off due to not paying the bills. He calls 911 and complains in a drunk stupor from what I heard and even calls KU to go along with the 911 call. UK got the call the next day.

IMO

Heard it happened but wasn't there. You think I could make that up, a little prickly aren't you.
IMO is habit only so I would say I heard that story and believe it to be true but was not present if you are asking for such detail.

Cant blame him for hiring BG and not give credit for hiring Cal.

You have to wonder how many banners would be hanging if MB had gone with Cal from the start. IMHO,
he was clearly the man for the job.

I believe boosters along with Pratt and company forced MB's hand to hire Cal, if solely left to MB, Mike Brey would have been hired.

Some of these I'd never heard before, just unreal. I think he also played Jasper before he was healed.

Did I ever tell you about the time Bill Gillispie showed up at my daughter’s wedding? You know my daughter, she’s a beautiful girl. Well, Gillispie shows up and you know he’s a big fella. Well, he’s standing right between me and my daughter at the ceremony. He’s got no right to be there, but he’s drunk and he’s Gillispie. Well, long story short, the priest accidentally marries me and Gillispie. We spend the weekend in the Poconos — he loved me like I’ve never been loved before

[roll][roll][roll]

“Did I ever tell you about the time BCG took me out to go get a drink with him? We go off looking for a bar and we can’t find one. Finally, BCG takes me into a vacant lot and says, ‘Here we are.’ Well, we sat there for a year and a half. Sure enough, someone constructed a bar around us. Well, the day they opened it, we ordered a shot, drank it, and then burnt the place to the ground. BCGy yelled over the roar of the flames, ‘Always leave things the way you found them!'”

It's a shame so few got your reference. I'm 26 and it was still clear as day haha. Props to you.
