Coach Hurley

Cut the Yankee crap. I was born and raised in Ohio, then moved to Connecticut for high school, but chose to attend UK because I fell in love with Rupp's Runts and Cawood in 1966. I have always bled blue and will until the day I die. I had to put up with the Yank crap at times during my days in Lexington, but thought that sort of blight on southern culture and its schools had long passed. Whether it's a joke or not, and I'll give these posters the benefit of the doubt, It's still in very poor taste and the same is true, BTW, of northerners who call all southerners rednecks, yahoos and the like. It's just bad form. Can't we finally end the Civil War?
We can do liberals vs conservatives if you want. That would distract from Yankees vs hillbillies. Oh wait. That may actually be the same groups of people. No peace

But in the town it was well known when they got home at night their fat and psychopathic wives would thrash them within inches of their lives!

Exactly how I picture Hurley.
You know she’s something else, you had guys like Goodman saying long before the Lakers and UK job opened that Hurley wouldn’t be going anywhere because Andrea won’t let him leave, it played out just like that too. Every time I’ve seen a picture of her she reminds me of Jersey Shore, she has that look about her.

I smell a loser who is so shallow that they judge others on where they are from versus who they actually are. Thank god my only interaction with you closed minded hypocrites is on this forum. Who TF still calls people Yankees?
The insults started with you saying get out the rebel flag. Hasn't racist racist racist gone on long enough?
It is unlikely anyone on here is an actual racist.
But it is certain that you are an ass.
Good day.

Hurley cost UConn that win yesterday. He's more focused on the referees than anything else on the court.

I’m actually thankful that we didn’t get him as our coach. We need a coach that doesn’t yell the entire game and a coach who is a respectful and a role model for our players. Hurley is a heck of a coach but he seems like a prick and we don’t need another one here at UK.

If he won huge here people would love him anyway, he would be our prick. But he’s not gonna be so he is an ass!

If you have ever been north of the Mason Dixon line you will find millions who look down on people from the south or Kentucky more specifically because of where we are from. So be careful to not fall from your high horse of thinking you or northerners are any different.

In regards to Pope vs Hurley.. I'll start by prefacing this statement that we will *likely* never see two titles from Pope. Even two Final 4s might be more unlikely than not, over a 10-12 year span..

But.. we beat the supposed best team in the nation (Duke), and Uconn just lost to Memphis. We have a coach who might very well have a system that's just as lethal as Hurleys.. and he's able to do it with grace and humility. Which is something that can go a long way for not only recruiting, but how officiating can help (or hurt) you, media love, etc.

Too early to say I'd rather have Pope over Hurley, because Hurley has two titles and that's so hard for any coach to get.. but man, I'm close. Hurley might have found his lightning in the bottle, like someone else said, and it might be gone already. Pope is showing all the right signs of a guy who can not only coach with the best of them, but recruit, have a modern offense, and have the right attitude and temperament.

I certainly don't have any more feelings of "missing out" on Hurley, that's for sure.
I can absolutely see Pope making two Final Fours in a 10-12 year period. I can actually see him winning two titles in that timeframe. This guy is extremely motivated and loves the school he’s coaching at. He also knows what it takes to win titles. He was the captain of arguably the best team in college basketball history. EDIT: Not to mention, he was coached by one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time, in Rick Pitino.

I can only imagine how good his teams will be once he starts getting some elite talent on campus. Don’t get me wrong, we have some great college players and they all already seem to know their roles. Amazing how quickly he threw this roster together and how well they’ve meshed and how much chemistry they have this early. I’m very optimistic about Pope at UK.

Triggered? I find it hilarious that there are still people who call people Yankees. These same people would probably take offense if someone up north called them a redneck. Of course, most “Yankees” probably wouldn’t think to call people that based solely on where they are from, but I guess some are still upset that they cannot own people.
The shear fact that you are looking down your nose, judging everyone on this board and are too oblivious (I know that is a big word for a little hillbilly like me) to the fact you are doing the very thing you are judging us for is comedy gold.

I respectfully disagree. At least for me. I grew up in Bobby Knight country, and I could never figure out why IU fans loved that angry Richard so much. I always found him to be embarrassing. I would've still been a UK fan under Hurley, but I never would've embraced him. Honor and character mean more to me than winning.

I can understand your view, just saying overall I think most people would support him after awhile. Bob Knight is still loved today by the Hoosiers. Because he was the last winner.

Cal gave UConn what should have been UK's #9 (really 8, because it was the year before the '12 title, but you get the point) and #10, thanks. Favored in both, shit the bed in both.
This! Even though we got some really tough calls in both games, Cal got out coached both times. Was a reoccurrence during his tenure.

hurly may be, right now, the best coach in college.
with that said im so glad he did not come here. northeastern attitudes dont fly in seky.
as long as they win we can tolerate it bit as with cal when you start losing that attitude wont fly
At one time Bobby Knight was considered the best X and O coach in college and his results showed that. People tended to overlook his antics because he won championships and at the least had IU in the hunt for one every year. However, when he started winning less and the younger generations of players didn't like his ways, he lost his support and he wasn't worth the trouble anymore. Hurley will have to keep winning big to be worth his nonsense or else they will get tired of him.

Plain and simple - you might put up with your bitchy wife if she’s a smoke show - but the second she starts getting less attractive the leash is much shorter. Personality, as much as people are trying to downplay it, is very important. Especially after we just got done with Cal who looked down on the fans. Can you imagine how Hurley, who’s from the same area but also much smarter than Cal with X and Os would’ve gotten along with our fans? It would’ve been a disaster.

His post game press conference was so pathetic.
His comments in the post game presser should get him fined. You can't openly critisize refs like that, but even worse, he talked anout how the Memphis player put no effort into going after the rebound. That's not something you typically see coaches doing.

That guy has some serious little-man syndrome.

I do think he will get us there. It's more so to say that the probability of any coach getting two final4s in a 10 year span, is probably less likely of happening, than happening. Just because the sport is so fickle. Which just goes to show how insane it is to go back to back like Hurley did, in this day and age. You could win a title like Tony Bennett and then never sniff another one. Very hard to string together 4 great games to get you that F4, against teams that almost all of which, are playing very well come March.

But yeah there are coaches out there who I think are multi year F4 guys, and I do think Pope is one of them. His game plan and offense are there, and so long as our recruiting looks like this (a top15 class or better), along with strong transfer portal.. he's gonna have a team that's capable every year.

Nah, he has "I just won two national titles and should be untouchable" syndrome. He expects everyone to be on their knees, bowing to him.

Can verify parts of this one for sure.

The contrast between Pope and Hurley is unreal. I want to win as badly as anyone, and I think we will win with Pope. But I kind of feel like we would have sold our souls with Hurley. I despise that man.

If you don't think that a lot of people in the Northeast are in truth assholes, I don't know what to tell you. Your sophist nonsense kind of reinforces that stereotype.
My mother was born and raised in New York, as was her sister, brothers, and pretty much all of her side of the family. I can attest to this.
I will never, ever forget merging onto Mass Pike and some CHILD in the back of a car with a NY plate flipping me off. WTH
Reminds me of when I was visiting family in NY and witnessed a young boy mooning an old man.

I love my family from NY, but I hate going up there and the stereotyping I receive.

I am shocked he’s recruited as well as he has being like that. I didn’t think kids these days would put up with a coach like that honestly. Kinda refreshing in some ways seeing there are some tough minded kids out there but he doesn’t have to be such a prick all the time.

I honestly don't think that Pope will have to get elite talent to have an elite TEAM. His roster construction shows that. Elite high school talent might not mesh into a great team.

I lived in the NE for 20 years and have been in KY for 20 years. There are PLENTY of GREAT people in the northeast, and the stereotyping of southern folk against the NE is just as damaging as theirs against you.
Never said there wasn't great people there, but I've been to several places in this world and my worst experiences were all in New York.
