But no complaining from me. Just stating the obvious. We don’t have SEC talent or athleticism. Slow footed. I don’t worry about the offense, although it could struggle against top tier competition as well, but the defense is where we are gonna struggle. And rebounding. But I’ll take a year or 2 of pope getting his players in place over another year of Cows 1 and done early round exits.

I disagree as well. They are a bit slow footed tonight because it's an exhibition against a D2 team. Very little motivation. I think we need to not start drawing season long observations from part of 2 exhibition games. We dont' know anything yet.

Thanks Cal. Take your non knowledge back to the Ark board

We will not out athlete anyone.

But this is not a decathlon.

In today’s college game teams win. This is going to be a very good team.

Guys will cover for each other and exploit weaknesses in the opponents.

We will win as a unit. Not on the back of a superstar or two.

These are players playing to win.

Not auditioning.

We will be top 10 by Jan and stay there.

We may not make SportsCenter top 10 very often. But we will be a top 10 basketball TEAM!!🏀

Hard disagree.

Brandon Garrison, Otega Oweh, Collin Chandler and Mr Butler beg to differ!!!

Those 4 alone are MORE than athletic enough!! And Jaxon Robinson ain’t no Cameron Mills!!!

This team has enough of everything to be competitive with ANY team we play, even including Duke!!

We’ll see if that translates to big time wins. I have a feeling it will.

Was we any good on defense the last few years Cal was the coach?

Butler and Oweh’s ball pressure will make up for other defensive weaknesses. Perimeter ball pressure and ability to guard the rim is huge part of college basketball. I feel like Butler, Oweh, Williams and Garrison provide this defense.

Brea needs to guard to stay on the floor. Robinson will be fine. Carr will struggle guarding, but I think he’ll also present problems for the other team.

Overall, I’ve said for a long time that a group of real good experienced players will beat young great talent in most games. We’ll get a chance to see that theory this year. We’ll take some losses throughout the year, but I don’t think anyone will want to face us come March!

We played horribly (HORRIBLY) against the best D2 team in the country and still won by 31.

We have a group of guys who've never played together before. Anyone who expected consistency and margins of victory in the 70s consistently was being irrational.

We'll get there. The narrative on this board, correctly, has been that it'll take time to gel. Once we do, we'll be tough to beat. That doesn't change just because we faced a team tonight that probably would've beaten us in... Other circumstances.

They were gritty on defense and couldn't miss half the time. How often has a team like that kicked our asses? We got just about their best shot tonight and came away barely worse for wear.

We'll be okay. Might be rough in the early season – might lose to Duke – might not. We didn't give up though, and I'm happier with the second half effort. We'll be okay.

I agree with the OP regarding the SEC pounding our bigs down low and being more athletic. But, what he doesn’t take into consideration is that we have a Coach that has played and knows how to play as a big. And I have a feeling that he will play zone and trap some to disrupt the other team. We have found a diamond in the rough in Pope. IMO

Robinson played in a conference better than the SEC last year, so did oweh. Brea played on a good Dayton team. Butler made it to the national title game. The talent is good enough. If a cal coached team were plying tonight, the game would have been a slog and Kentucky would have won by 15 points

KenPom picked us to lose 13 games. I’d say this is at worst a 10-loss team, unless Williams had a season ending injury tonight (perish the thought).
