Thought this would be of interest here. Have watched some of this, the best interview with Knight I've seen. In the interview, Knight says he does not respect John Wooden because of Sam Gilbert. I thought that was interesting. I wonder if Coach Rupp or other coaches ever addressed that issue?

I suspect Rupp and Hall never addressed it because, quite frankly, we had our own backroom booster issues back in those days.

Knight was the one coach who was always willing to speak out on the issue because … obnoxious asshole though he might’ve been … he was always known for being maniacal about keeping his program squeaky clean. It’s easier to cast stones when you’re not living in a glass house yourself.

Good points. I think most everyone had them. BTW I just learned the interview came out in 2017. Ugh. Just now seeing it.

BS. They won the recruiting war for Lawrence Funderburke. That doesn't happen without a bag man.

thx for sharing really enjoyed that. HATE/LIKE the man was a hell of a coach we need men like he was.

He certainly was not perfect at all but no one is and it is all about winning in my book.

So there is no doubt about my allegiance I am a diehard cat, cannot stand IU FAN BASE but I did respect that man.

I recall a rumor back in the day that Joe B. offered Kent Benson’s father a brand new tractor if his son would commit to UK.

My dad was a young man in the sixties and seventies and he hates Coach Knight to this day. I think my generation that came up during the pitino/tubby years missed out on the animosity that came with being rivals because we all seemed to think highly of him even as he was past his prime.

Dad was tight with the husband of CM’s secretary in Nashville and would often attend games/events with them and got to meet a lot of the coaches from that era. The memories that always stuck with me- Bobby Knight was massive and Eddie Sutton told him to buy Apple and Walmart stock (around 1985).

In Season on the Brink, Feinstein quoted Knight as saying that Kentucky was a “bastion of cheating.” He physically assaulted Joe B Hall. He was pro-death penalty for the concurrent Emory and SAT scandals. What he felt about UCLA was a fraction of the hate he had for UK.

Rest in Peace and all that, but Bobby Knight is not a saint in Kentucky.

You just have to keep being an ass don’t you ? If you would prefer to cheer for a different coach and team that would be fine so go a head a pick one help yourself!
It's not very nice to call other posters names. It's also ok for me to be frustrated when our coach is underperforming vs. expectations. I'm allowed to be a huge fan of UK and strongly dislike the coaching at the same time. Why would you suggest I go cheer for another team because of that? Would you still be blindly cheering for Cal if he were 9-16 (AGAIN) this season?

I just think Cal doesn't demand the same intensity toward winning that Bobby Knight did.

AND HE SHOULD.

Lighten up, Francis.

Perfectly fine for you to be frustrated with the coach, you just don't have to hijack every thread to criticize the coach. This thread had nothing to do with Cal.

That's the beauty of a message board. Every thread is ChooseYourOwnAdventure!
That being said, I don't criticize Cal in every post.

It probably just feels that way to you after a really really really bad loss.

Such a high intensity for winning he mistreated and abused his players to get there. Nah, I'm glad Cal doesn't view winning like that.
I had an EXTREMELY HIGH INTENSITY coach that didn't throw chairs and choke players. The two can be mutually exclusive. Cal could put more intensity behind instilling a will to win without going off the deep end.

I want a coach that hates to lose more than he likes to win.

Maybe but I doubt we were paying NBA salaries to our players

Tough not to respect a guy who cracks a whip and chokes players at practice all while acting worse than a toddler who gets a "no" when asking for a piece of candy. No thanks...good basketball mind? Yes. Should be respected? No...not at all.
