Bob Knight has passed.

How often did you "see" Knight, OFF camera? You are basing your opinion on two tings:

1. You are "that" UK fan...

2. What you saw on TV

Good avenue to take there, bud...
I find that in times of tragedy or loss, it's when the worst of society come out in support of all that is not good. It's that time when I put people on ignore. Sorry that the idiot was saying those things. I hope your day is going well.

I hated Knight rather he was dead or alive. And make no mistake, he absolutely hated us and our whole fan base. He never had a decent thing to say about anyone, especially Kentucky fans. All you damn phony ass people. Bob Knight would piss on your graves if he got a chance. Just because someone was a good coach ( which he absolutely was ) that doesn't give him the right to be an asshole and treat people like shit.

Now he can choke the angels in heaven. I’m still shocked no one ever took a swing at him, though I’ve heard a UK assistant almost did. RIP and condolences to those he cared about, hope he found peace before he passed.

I guess that’s why IU fired him. Hint - it wasn’t for his on court performance.
It was how he interacted with players. Which was wrong.

Bob Knight was not a saint. He also wasn't the evil devil incarnate.

The man paid his final dues to the world. Everything else is between him and the Father.

I didn't like him personally, but always respected his coaching abilities. He was probably one of the top 2 or 3 best X's and O's coaches ever. Maybe THE best.

One measure of his greatness is that he built winning teams without top recruits. He coached only one player in his career who became an NBA All Star, Isiah Thomas.

"Ten former Calipari-coached players have gone on to be named NBA All-Stars."

Yeah no need to apologize for me, thanks for the thoughts though. If you think I’m an idiot I feel good about my opinion. But you’ve got me on ignore so you won’t read this, I’m sure.

i loved watching these videos of Knight. some of the funniest sheeet i've ever seen! (it's him on the golf course and doing some commercials)

I’m breaking my own rule of not engaging with people who overuse “bro”, but I’ll respond one more time and be done.

If your argument is “yeah bro but you didn’t know the real Bob Knight behind closed doors” then yes, no shit, I did not have access to the private life of Bob Knight. I’m guessing neither did you but I’m sure you met him once at a Denny’s or something so I know you’re upset that a UK fan on a UK message board is tarnishing his legacy lol.

The only Bob Knight I knew, as a PUBLIC FIGURE, was a reprehensible person.

Just as an aside I have a pretty good lawn, I don’t do much laundry but my wife prefers it that way, and my current haircut sucks.
A friend of mine described RMK as an "insufferable prick who won a lot of basketball games. When he stopped winning basketball games, he was just an insufferable prick."

It always surprises me how some compare coaching styles/success 50 years apart.

You think Knight would win in todays game? He wouldn't even have a winning record.
I wonder how many titles he would have won with four #1 picks, 23 lottery picks, and over 50 NBA players, even if most of them were freshmen and sophomores.

I bet the answer is more than one.

If we're talking todays game, zero. Not only would top recruits refuse to play for him, he wouldn't play freshmen if he did.

How'd he do at Texas Tech? He sucked, teetered around .500 in conference.... and that was 20 years ago when he was the same age Cal is now.

The same point is true regarding Cal and fitting him into Knight's Era. He likely doesn't have anywhere close to the same amount of success as Knight without multiple NBA All-stars on his rosters.

Both coaches are men of a particular age. The only difference is that Knight actually won 3x more titles in his era. Cal is the second greatest squanderer of talent in NCAA history, second only to Dean Smith, but you already knew that didn't you.

You seem very fixated on this talent conversation. Who says talent wins titles? Whats the evidence that #1 classes should equal wins?
The best class ive seen in 25 years was Dukes class a few years ago with Zion Williamson and company, they didnt even crack the final four. And that was with possible the best coach of all time. hmmm...if he cant even go far with an absolute stacked team..

Truth be told- He was a great coach 40-50 years ago, but a really chitty person. If basketball was never invented, he'd be the biggest azzhole to ever walk the earth. But win, and people forget most of your issues.

Tell me what exactly did he do to contribute to the success of his players in the classroom. Did he threaten them with playing time or laps around the gym? Very noble indeed. How bout we give the players credit for doing what is expected.
You’re totally missing the point. I’m not saying the players don’t deserve credit, they do. But the coach still influences the culture. Trust me, there are college coaches (not just basketball) who make every excuse for their student-athletes who struggle academically. They won’t punish them, blame the academic staff, etc. There would probably be more issues nationally if the NCAA didn’t have APR and continuing eligibility standards. Knight held his players accountable. He deserves some respect for that, regardless of how you feel about him personally.

I thought we were talking about Knight's ability to coach versus Cal. Let's get back on topic.

Does Knight have 3 times the amount of titles as Calipari?

What do you think that signifies as far as coaching at the highest level is concerned?

I'm not missing the point at all. How do you determine if coach acted for love of the players or his own egotistical agenda?

Back in the day, when even the best of the best players stayed in college for 3 years, No. 1 ranked recruiting classes really meant something in regard to winning (although not immediately). The top programs that could stack recruiting classes were mostly the best teams year-in-and year-out; and freshmen (5-star or otherwise) weren’t relied on to carry those teams because they generally had better current players in their upperclassmen. The freshmen could contribute in a lesser role while developing their skills, physical maturity and basketball IQ.

That’s not the situation that exists today. No. 1 ranked recruiting classes are not stacked, instead those classes are basically totally turned over and replaced each year with a new crop of freshmen. So, holding on to an old idea about what getting the No. 1 ranked recruiting class means – or even should mean – in regard to winning college basketball games and championships today is, I believe, a conventional wisdom fallacy. Although I think that old conventional wisdom is really losing believers in the media and among hardcore CBB fans.

He was a legendary coach that made our games with IU a must watch. I doubt those days will return in our rivalry with the Hoosiers.

I was always bothered by his hypocrisy. Looked down on writers but was a voracious reader. Hated the media but went on to join the media.
