Bob Knight has passed.

Really, the positive attributes were even more than not cheating and graduating players.

Most people would be surprised at how generous and thoughtful he could be - because he was simultaneously (and more publicly) one of the world’s great a-holes.

And despite the rivalry, he had some great relationships with the likes of Cawood Ledford, Joe B. Hall, and especially CM Newton (who was one of his closest friends in coaching and an assistant on the ‘84 Olympic team).
He was an ASSHOLE, RIP.

Of course, that was certainly one very real part of his persona.

I’m just saying there was more there that didn’t often get publicly displayed - but which was also a very real part of his persona.

Beyond that, I always loved that he called Michael Jordan the best player he’d ever seen play basketball…in the summer of 1984 before he’d ever played a single game in the NBA. That was quite a thing for him to have said, considering the players he had seen play.

Ensuring your players graduate — which sets them up for life after basketball — is a form of caring. Not that other coaches don’t but getting that degree was important to Knight.
No...the players/students accomplished that. Guarantee you Bob didn't take any tests for them. Bob "caring" only because of the reflection it would have upon himself.
With all due respect being a good basketball coach doesn't excuse the fact he was a pitiful human being. If Hell exists, perhaps they do bury him upside down so he can watch the flames getting closer.....

Like what?
How much time you got? Look i get it, I do. Knight was an asshole. No doubt. But also one of the most generous people on the planet. He dontaed his entire TV/Radio show income, to help build libraries...When Landon Turner was paralyzed in a car accident, Knight helped pay for his expenses, then asked his good friend Red Auerbach to draft Landon---And he did.

Look at his former players....What they have become.

Asshole for sure...Bullying?. Sure.,..I guess. But I'll listen to the dudes that played for him, and how 99% of them speak very highly.

Not gonna defend the dumb shit he done. You cant. But Knight was , could be a very kind, generous, welcoming person. Met him a few times---And you'd simply thought you were tallking to the dude down the street.

Plenty....

What he did for Landon Turner.

Donating his shoe contract, TV and radio money, to help build libraries at IU, and across the state.

How he heloed AIDS victim, Ryan White from Kokomo; This at a time where AIDS paitients weere trated very, very poorly.

Dude at times, complete ass clown. Shit he said was dumb as ****, and even embarrassing. But the guy was also very charitable, very kind, cared, and helped those less fortunate a lot.

No one has disagreed. He was. He was also a very giving, kind, caring person. But of coursem since you know him so well, off the court---you already knew this....right?

Read about Ryan White, and what Knight did for that family.
Why are you here? We don’t want to hear that crap. He was a terrible person. We saw him in action for decades.

Guessing you’ve never played or worked in college sports. A coach has a lot of impact on his/her players’ academics, i.e., punishments for skipping classes, tutors, etc. The ones who don’t care are the ones who have kids flunk out…because there are no consequences for blowing off school. I’m not dismissing Knight’s flaws, there were many. But he still oversaw the program, and regardless of his “why” he made sure his players went to class. That’s an indisputable fact, and I respect him for that. The choking/cussing/shenanigans? Not so much.

Yeah I had a dude down the street in my neighborhood just like that. Used to throw lawn chairs at the neighborhood children and choke people to make them the best they could be.

But his Christmas decorations in 1976 were far and away the best in the whole town so we all decided to ignore how much of an insecure asshole he was and call him a genius. Future assholes really looked up to him.

Tell me what exactly did he do to contribute to the success of his players in the classroom. Did he threaten them with playing time or laps around the gym? Very noble indeed. How bout we give the players credit for doing what is expected.

There are thousands of coaches, admins, support staff, etc who do the same exact thing for students and athletes every day at all levels of competition without being an abusive toxic human being.

I offer condolences to his family and those close to him. And every human being on earth is messy and has good and bad traits. But the guy was not a good guy. He was a sociopathic narcissist and he literally displayed it on camera for everyone to see.
