Best Western Movie?

-Crescent Moon
-Bolivar's Army
-Fading Waters
-No Time For Peace
-Sun Has No Light

The "best" is probably Unforgiven, but my favorite is Tombstone. The best Western of all time though is all 6+ hours of Lonesome Dove.
I'll second Lonesome Dove as the best, IMO, although technically a miniseries. Also best western book as well.

I remember seeing a movie with the chick in Bob's naughty porn star thread while staying at a Best Western not too long ago but I don't remember the name of it. Great movie though.

It was a bad joke on my part. I meant a literal tombstone, as in a gravestone. As in, not wanting to be dead.

I thought that might be what you had meant after I responded. I'll chalk it up to being late when that joke was made. Ha!

My top 10, in order

The Wild Bunch
Unforgiven
Rio Bravo
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid
Once Upon a Time In The West
High Plains Drifter
3:10 To Yuma (2007 remake)
The Magnificent Seven (Original)
*Tombstone

* I prefer to watch by fast forwarding past each and every scene that features Dana Delaney. Her and the lovey-dovey stuff with Wyatt Earp pert near ruin what is otherwise a fine western movie.

How about a few nods to John Wayne who made a multi-decade career in the genre?

The Searchers
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Red River

John Wayne made a bunch of good Westerns.
Loved True Grit. Just can't put his work on the best of the genre list.

The cast of Tombstone is ridiculously strong.

That and Butch and Sundance are my favorites I think.

Really, how can anyone go with anything other than High Plains Drifter? (or another spaghetti western......they was the bomb)

My top 10, in order

Watched The Searchers many times. Very good. Ain't Top 10.

The Searchers has a slow pace and so it's not to everyone's taste. The main character is also an unlikable bigot. However, it makes the top 10 of almost every legitimate Western list. These lists have it at either #1 or #2.

Apologies to the Duke, but Clint made the best movies. I probably go with The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly but I'm a huge fan of Unforgiven and Josey Wales as well.

There have been quite a few really good Westerns made in the past ~10 years too. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, No Country For Old Men. I wouldn't put it on a top-10 list or anything but Meek's Cutoff was very good.

Like your list and agree with the Dana Delaney stuff in Tombstone. I would Open Range to that list.
