Missed a couple tonight -probably nerves. Chicago guys come to UK and thrive. They seem tough minded. Like the ones we had and have.

He was a mid-range guy and a slasher at St. Rita's.

I saw him play a few games last, as I teach in the Chicago Arch Diocese and went to see him play. According to the Chicago Tribune, he shot 47% from the field as a senior, averaging 21 points and 6 rebounds per game.

I actually think he'll shoot a decent percentage this year due to his love for attacking the rim. He doesn't settle for jump shots.

Here's an article with his stats and also some good info about Matthews' future plans outside of basketball.

You're on point. Matthews isn't going to play because he can score. He's going to play because he's feisty as hell on defense and doesn't mind mixing it up on the glass from the wing position.

That said, back to the OP's point. I guess I'm kind of a fan of Chicago kids, too. In fact, the last three titles UK has won have featured a Chicago kid as their best player - Davis in '12; Mohammed in '98; and Walker in '96.

Ulis might keep the trend coming this year, if one sticks to Cal's narrative that he's the best player - not prospect - on the team.

Good free throw shooting could keep him on the floor in close games if he turns into an elite defender like we hope. Wonder what he shot in HS?

Two games I saw he shot a combined 11/15. I kept a running total because I'm a nerd like that. He has a good stroke and I think it's clear Cal prefers him to Mulder at this point.

Thanks. I'll just assume he will be 70% plus. You're correct he does have a nice shot.

Matthews shot below 40% from the field and sub 55% from the line during his EYBL career.

It's about all my cursory search online could find regarding his shooting performance before college.

To me, Matthews is an offensive black hole. He can't/ won't shoot from deep, so his man will clog the middle. That means the two of Ulis, Briscoe, and Murray that are in the game can't effectively drive and can't dump it into bigs LaBassiere and Poythress/ Lee.

If he plays, it will be because Kentucky is running and gunning and hoping for fast breaks galore.

I don't think Matthews plays more than mop-up minutes in games that matter. The combination of Ulis, Briscoe, Murray, Poythress, Lee, LaBassiere, Humphries, and perhaps Willis will soak up all that clock.

He will play-- and play quite a bit-- against lesser competition. If he can ever get his shot fixed, he'll be a very good role player, a la Liggins. But he has a long way to go to be similar to Liggins.
