Any chance Cal's been sandbagging...?

Throwing a bunch of concoctions in during camp Cal to ensure that they would stumble a bit?

By doing this he knew they would struggle and put them in close game situations...put some callous on 'em

How 'bout that theory??

Ive been thinking about this the last couple days and I absolutely think he's sandbagging. Trying to see how his team would react in a close game.

So, are you trying to say that Cal has allowed the following:

- Our bigs being unable to score in the post because they can't keep a handle on the ball
- Our Bigs also not able to grab the ball on rebounds because they go up weak and use one hand
- Our guards not being able to penetrate the zone or reverse the ball quickly enough to break down the defense
- Trying to draw fouls when we do get to the rim and having our shots blocked instead of going up strong
- Missing Free Throws down the stretch that could ice the game

However, after all of the above we are still UNDEFEATED!!!!. So if Cal is "snadbagging" he's doing one heck of a job of it!!!

My old man is sure of this, though he doesn't term it as "sandbagging". I definitely think Cal does NOT want this team to peak too early. How do you stop that from happening? I have no idea. In my mind I used to think Cal wanted 40-0. Now I wonder if he would actually be ok with losing a game here or there in order to be more prepared and better battle-tested. Again, he's not trying to lose in my opinion, but I definitely think he is doing things to ensure that his team does not peak too early.

Do you remember when Cal said he would like to have a team go 40-0 before he retired.
This team has a legitimate shot at doing that so why would he purposely put the team
in a close game where there would have a much better chance at losing. The short answer
is no, the long answer is no and all the answers in between are no.

I don't think he'll ever try to lose.

But, he has shown he'll back off and let the kids play.

Is that the reason for these last 2 bad games? I doubt it.

Miss hit shots, tough shots.
We then went on the road and came out flat.

No, that would not only make him a horrible coach (which he isn't) but, a horrible human being as well (which he also isn't).

Sandbagging is def going on..............how else can you explain why we're missing all these 2 pt shots? Cal is telling guys to close your eyes, throw the ball up there and don't try to rebound it.

Keeps the other team hoping for a win, only to mentally crush them and their fans at the end. Pure genius move that we've never seen before.

K did this the last 2 years in the NCAA tournament, but it backfired against Lehigh and Mercer. He had lil Wojo pulling the strings to get him ready for a top job.

There are some rediculous things stated on message boards but this ranks up their with the most rediculous. I guess Cal had WCS and Towns foul out to make it fair.

I don't buy that thought at all. Cal hates losing and I don't see him doing anything to put us in a position to do so.

You forgot:

- Telling the other team to hack and slap us to death and telling the refs to allow it while calling touch fouls on us

No, but I wouldn't be surprised if he threw a LOT at them during camp cal, and knew they'd struggle with it. I don't think he intentionally stunted us, but definitely that we'd stumble trying to implement new concepts.

At least I hope so

No, I don't think he did or would do that. I do think he wanted some battles for them to try and figure some things out on their own. Meaning, instead of giving his normal direction and instruction, he let them work it out a little.

Good thing you called it a theory!

I'm sure he's spending all of his time teaching them things in practice that will sabotage the team and leave them with broken mechanics and tendencies, because that would totally be easy to fix later when he's bored of losing!

Sandbagging? No. Intentionally mixing and matching combinations of players who aren't used to being on the floor together, all while we're going through a weak portion of the schedule? Absolutely.

What we're seeing now is a tear down of sorts. The individual platoons were clicking at an unbelievable rate. But somewhat struggled when the players were interchanged. I think Cal is intentionally intermixing the platoons, allowing the offensive struggles to take place during the weaker part of the schedule.

I don't think Cal wants this team to lose. I do think he wants them to face adversity, and I think hes willing to suffer a loss here or there in order to make that happen. Either way, this experimental stretch is making a stronger team.

this is spot on IMO.

Yeah OP, coach is trying to lose games to appease you people that think a loss is a great strategy. Coach Cal's inability to lose the last two games only shows how overrated a coach he is.

All coaches put their teams in a variety of situations and sometimes create pressure scenarios where otherwise they might not have existed. That's coaching...I don't know that cal's intent was for his team to go to back to back ots but I do believe he has not unleashed the dogs defensively the last two games.
