The 6’4 center they hoped to have next yr ( Herron ) entered the portal. She was coming off heart surgery and was a top center recruit …big blow . Hits keep coming for Elzy

Mitch made the lazy hire. Elzy had no real qualifications for that job. We could have had a real coach, but no. Elzy was there and it was easy.
While I agree that it was a lazy hire, she was qualified for the position.

My guess would be she’s a disciplinarian like her college coach, Pat Summit. No nonsense- go to class do your job.

I don’t agree that she was qualified but how are you supposed to become a head coach if being a head coach is what qualifies you to become one?

Seems impossible
There was a time when coaches cut their as HC at a smaller school first, then got a job in a top conference. Even Coach Staley coached at Temple before she was hired at S. CAROLINA. And her playing pedigree between college, pros, and the Olympics was top notch.

Not all good assistant coaches are good head coaches. Its true in every sport (and business frankly). Coach Elzy would have been better served starting her HC career at a non-power 5 school first. Get these early speed bumps worked thru and earn a promotion. WBB has changed since Pat Summit was hired at Tenn 50 yrs ago.

Yes, I agree with climbing the ladder so to speak. The guy I replied to made it sound like he thinks to be a head coach anywhere you need head coaching experience. Which seems like an impossible standard to meet.

I agree the biggest schools should have higher standards in their hiring process when compared to smaller schools. Should he obvious, but I know there are semantic fiends (I don’t consider you to be one of these btw) on the board so I’ll put in this disclaimer: when I’m discussing the size of the school I’m discussing that in terms of their athletic department’s prowess (although the big schools in this instance are also big in terms of real estate and student body as well but I digress).

Not sure how that’s true. Never a head coach before.
She was the Associate Head Coach at UT and UK for a combined 8 years. UL women’s basketball is doing just fine with a guy that they promoted from AC. For a program like UK, she had plenty of experience. Just bc you have experience doesn’t mean you’re the right person. Mitch took the interim tag off of her way too early.

Why can't she keep players?
I mean she recruits them, they come here and then poof, out the door they go.To much turmoil thus far since she took over.
I agree that the program has been a mess. Even though I think she had enough experience doesn’t mean I think Mitch taking the interim tag off of her so early was the right move. It’s come back to bite him in the ass.

Some people thought it odd UT let her walk to what amounted to a lateral move to UK , when Mitchell hired her . Mitchell quit like right before the season started a few yrs ago , so options were limited and there was little choice when she was initially promoted to HC.

I had no issues with her getting the interim tag when Mitchell left 2 weeks before the first game. There were no other options. What I do have issues with is Mitch removing the interim tag 6 games into the season. The only argument that can be made to do it that soon is for recruiting, but her first class sucked, so that was out the window.

I don’t know if you give a coach a pass that loses what would‘ve been her three best players or not . If she’s evaluated solely on W-L this upcoming year , I think it’s over . They aren’t going to be any good . But , it’s not the team she should have .

It's worked out pretty great for UK with Kenny Payne....

Typically, you don’t take over a successful D1 program that had established itself as a top 25 team as your first head coaching gig. A school like that *should* has its choice of someone with experience at a similar level. Generally, an assistant coach will get their first job as a head coach at a lower level (high school maybe) then move up through the ranks.

It isn’t that she wasn’t qualified to be a head coach, period. It’s that she wasn’t qualified to be a head coach at Kentucky at that point in time.

She can’t recruit, coach, keep players, or add good ones from the portal.

But hey, she did win a sec tourney with an all time great player and continued to win zero tourney games with her after. Kudos to Mitch!

So she come here and had to have heart surgery and Kentucky sticks with her but she don't stick with Kentucky, what gives? she could at least stayed one more year, wonder what could have happened while she was on the mend. We had two six four girls at last now one again.

She may have left because they took that other center . If so , that’s pretty weak …but the nature of the portal I guess

Something is definitely wrong with the WBB program. They should be able to be a net add thru the portal but they are going the wrong way. I think Cal must be advising her.
Cal is already get acclimated to his future ambassador role to the athletic department

All you have to do is listen to / look at her. I wouldn’t want to play for her. She doesn’t inspire confidence, desire, nor the drive to run thru your opponent. She obviously isn’t an X’s & O’s head coach and doesn’t have a speck of “swag” college athletes of todays day and age desire.

Horrible hire. It will only be downhill from here.

Technically, yes. Flimsy qualifications IMO. We could have gotten someone with a proven record.
She was just as qualified as 4 other SEC head coaches who never were head coaches. It would have been really tough to get rid of her regardless. She was the only option for the interim position. Mitch pulled the trigger too quick to give her the permanent job. But…UK finished the season ranked 17th in the nation and was the 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament. She was getting the job at the end of that first season if she still had the interim tag on her.

She was I supposed, ( although I believe they should’ve went after a proven winner who would take us to another level), but once she showed how she could actually handle the program, well, they should’ve moved on. Just my opinion of course! I understand making that run with Howard and Edwards to win the SEC tournament, but it was awful before that tournament and unbelievably worse since. I honestly hope they turn it around, but I sure don’t see it happening. Kentucky Basketball’s program needs to be better than this. Get to work ladies. Ohh, man I hated losing Walker. I loved watching that young lady play the game. She was a fighter. Also the Cambridge kid who’s sister/cousin is the number one recruit in the country. That hurt.

u start at a smaller school as the leader of the program, work hard, win, and work yourself up to one of the top Basketball schools in the history of college sports. Lol
Again, JMO.

We'll see how those other four do over the long haul. Agree to disagree on Elzy. Mitch made a lazy hire and it's showing.
