Saw a thread on IC where they pretty much label that 08-09 UNC*** team as the GOAT. I understand homerism and don't necessarily blame them for thinking their team might beat our team. And I know we tend to compare our teams favorably to others in history. But that team lost four games, including at home to unranked Boston College and at unranked Maryland. They also lost at #4 ranked Wake Forest (no shame there) and in the ACC tourney title game to #22 Florida State. They were ranked #2 going into the the NCAA tourney.

They had a great run in the tourney, but they've put this team up on a pedestal the likes of which I've rarely seen. I'd say our '96 team takes them and the '12 team would win at least half. I think the 2015 would eat them up inside. Yeah, Hansbrough was tough, and so were Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington, but it was an average defensive team. They scored a lot of points but IMHO didn't see the kinds of defense in the ACC that they would face with UK in 96, 2012 or 2015.

What say you?

2009 UNC 34-4 .9599 122.4(1) 92.9(21)
2012 UK 38-2 .9690 121.3(2) 89.9(8)
2015 UK 36-0 .9777 118.8(6) 85.6(1)

Typically, title teams have top 10 offenses and defenses (non-UConn category). I would take 2012 UK and 2015 UK over UNC (assuming we win the title this year). 2013 Louisville was probably better. 2008 Kansas was definitely better. Heck, I would take 2005 UNC over 2009 UNC; better balanced team. Why UNC fans think 2009 > 2005 is beyond me.

2009 team was very good, but 4 losses, included 2 to unranked teams. 2009 UNC lost to 70 BC (at home), 48 Maryland, 27 Wake Forest, and 31 Florida State. And they avoided a pretty solid UConn team and instead got their whipping boy, Tom "Gets Blown Out by UNC" Izzo, in the final. Early season buzzer beater against FSU offsets the fact that Maryland loss was OT? Loss to FSU (and escape against VT) in ACC tournament happened when Lawson was out.

2012 UK lost to 10 Indiana and 12 Vanderbilt.

2015 UK lost to no one (yet).

Thank you for lending additional insight into my anecdotal observations. Sounds like my hypothesis is accurate and, as I suspected, UNC*** fans are FOS.

I don't think 2009 was even the greatest UNCheat team during their cheating history.
