"You may or may not remember this, but on Feb. 26, 2011, the Kentucky Wildcats beat the Florida Gators in Rupp Arena. After the game, the school held a ceremony for its coach, John Calipari, who had just notched the 500th collegiate win of his career. It's a big milestone. Kentucky celebrated it accordingly. Then we all forgot about it and moved on and watched the NCAA tournament and the NBA playoffs.

Anyway, not everyone forgot about the UK numbers game. The NCAA Committee on Infractions certainly didn't. At the time, it questioned the school's counting of Calipari's vacated wins from seasons at Memphis and Massachusetts and told Kentucky that it needed to subtract 42 victories from the coach's total if it wanted to align itself with the NCAA's statistical record.

Now, a few months later, the Committee on Infractions is starting to get annoyed. According to the Lexington Herald-Leader's Jerry Tipton, the COI sent Kentucky President Lee T. Todd Jr. a "letter asking the school to publicly acknowledge it was wrong to recognize John Calipari's 500th coaching victory this past season." Committee Chairman Dennis Thomas wants more than that, though. He says the wording of the apology must be "approved by the Committee on Infractions prior to its release" and he wants a response by next Friday at the latest -- and he's not playing around:

More than once in his five-page letter, Thomas wrote of how UK's handling of Calipari's victory total was "troubling," "extremely troubling" and "very troubling" to the Committee on Infractions. If UK did not agree, Thomas said school officials would be asked to make an in-person appearance before the committee.

500 win banner extremely troubling.

Decades of blatant academic fraud, cars, guns, drugs, etc for players? Perfectly fine.

If it had been just a banner, I would have been upset and felt like the NCAA was being unfair or too harsh in their statements to UK. However, this was a GAME BALL. It was completely disrespectful in every way to the NCAA, and I'm just thankful that UK evaded getting the death penalty for such a heinous act.

This has been cited by many posters many times but it takes on new and "troubling"meaning today.Glad to see someone post it again we all need to be reminded.

Kentucky should have laughed at the NCAA then and should put it up now. It’s obvious that the NCAA cannot and will not do anything anymore.

They ruled a player at NC State ineligible today,so they will do some things. One school can do nothing about this but collectively things can and should be done.

They can rule a player ineligible, but that doesn’t mean that NC State can’t play him, threaten to sue the NCAA and tie it up for along that NC State can’t get away with it.

At this point, just because the NCAA says something it doesn’t mean that the school has to listen. The NCAA cannot and now will not be able to enforce their own rules anymore.

I hope you are right.

should colleges be asking themselves if they should leave the NCAA at this point? they just enforce things randomly,

UNC: lets make players who can't read eligible
NCAA: yeah we're cool with that

NC state: we are gonna play a player that took a summer class before his coach left
NCAA:like hell you are, we cant allow players to be eligible if they took a summer class

I know Barnhart doesn't have the balls to do it but, as a big FU to the NCAA, UK should issue a press release saying that they will "effectively immediately recognize ALL of Cal's wins that were previously incorrectly omitted."

Not an academic issue so, the NCAA has no jurisdiction, right?

Actually, Ketucky/Cal never did apologize for the game ball, and if you notice in all of Cal's update videos from his office, that game ball always sits right behind his head. I've always imagined Cal placed it there as a symbolic middle finger to the NCAA.

This isn't even random. Random would be better. There is a very clear delineation in terms of who the NCAA is and isn't willing to punish.

You know, you're right about all of that. I've noticed that ball on occasion and always chuckled just a bit to myself. Now, after the whiff on UNCheat I hope Cal moves it to his desk.

What's bad is that the statement on UNC was written by the Commissioner of the SEC. How do you think it would have turned out, had it been UK, with the Commissioner of the ACC presiding as chair of the committee?

If you remember, when he was announced as chairman, he had some tough talk about North Carolina and the tar heels threw a fit and tried to have him replaced . Since then he's been taught to toe the company line.

The UNCheat corruption ring is humongous. Endless pockets too.

What's even better is they took the time to send this to UK during their Cam Newton investigation... where they also found no wrong doing... weird.

UK should have pulled the banner and just changed the number to 458 and put it right back up & keep updating it as Cal got to 500

Sankey is crap. His tenure so far as SEC commish has been shit and it will get worse. He is a new age touchy-feely clown. This is IMO from afar.
