It's Fine To Start Being Optimistic About UK Football for 2025

I'm starting to think we are learning from previous mistakes. I feel we are targeting more seasoned and proven players in the portal. Hester is an example of taking a flyer on dude who made splash plays, we lacked those. The move to the Nebraska rb seemed pragmatic budget wise, NFL doesn't pay high on runningbacks, why should we? Seems like they are taking the o-line and it's depth much more seriously. QB is seasoned and has experience at least. Stoops seems reengaged some. I'm hoping for a bowl game. I wish we had a Spring game with all the moving pieces coming together. Will our coordinators have to dumb down our schemes to accommodate the reoccurring churn each year?

Props to Mississippi State

It’s easy to hate on opposing teams in the SEC. Some of the teams and fan bases deserve it 100%. The character of their players and home court biased whistle has a lot of do with it also. For example, I will cheer against Georgia the rest of the year regardless of opponent. Now to Mississippi State. Their players played hard and with fire and passion but they were the first person to help our guys up when knocked down and Chris Jans seems like a good dude, unlike Mike White and others. I hope they win every game they play unless we meet them again in the tournament.

Did anyone else hear this?

I haven’t seen anyone else mention this, but they said during the broadcast that Kerr was at shoot around before the game without the boot on and just sneakers. That seems pretty significant in his recovery. I know they said he wasn’t doing much, but the point is he’s able to take the boot off some now and that’s huge.

Like a phoenix from the ashes, a fresh Caleb Wilson thread.

Here are the most recent tidbits:

David Sisk as of this morning: “I haven't heard anything any differently. I will if I get anything, and so will Travis. But I still am saying that Kentucky was the favorite when the season began. Although there is buzz in certain camps in another direction I haven't been told that.“

Travis Graf as of Friday: “I’ve texted a handful of people and I’ve yet to hear a smoking gun to UNC on my end thus far. Some acted like UNC would be a huge surprise. I’m gonna continue talking to people.

People have asked about NIL stuff being signed, and like I said last week when it was brought up, I had heard rumors for a month that some things like that had been in the works. The problem is I’m not sure how to confirm that, and even if I did, there’s still a lot of grey area on how binding anything is in terms of that stuff. If it did happen, was something signed or was it an agreement? Not sure. But there have been heavy rumors floating around for awhile.

I’m not flipping my opinion to UNC unless I hear something concrete.”

Travis Graf as of Thursday: “I just got off the phone with a Caleb Wilson source. They’re setting up their announcement day & time. They wouldn’t tip their hand on which direction it was going, but said the commitment is coming soon (for sure this month).

Latest Intel I have is from 2-3 weeks ago and it leans UK. I’m gathering intel with different sources currently outside of the recruitment. NIL has always been a big part of this recruitment, could a big bag have been thrown to sway things? Sure. But I haven’t heard of that having happened on my end.”

Jack Pilgrim as of last week: Hinted at a possible Hoophall announcement. Hoophall runs this Thursday to next Monday (16th-20th).

Travis Branham started the UNC stuff last Thursday with this quote on 247: “So, with just a little over three weeks left in the month and despite all of the noise, my unpopular opinion is that North Carolina is the favorite in this recruitment and where I currently predict Wilson to land.”

Jamie Shaw soon after Branham: “While I have not placed an RPM just yet, based on the latest Intel I have received I am close to putting one in for the Tar Heels to ultimately land Caleb Wilson.”

Late Night, Very Wordy, SEC Big Man Thread

I have seen a lot of Amari Williams criticism in threads lately. I like his game a lot, fully acknowledging it isn’t perfect. I guess I am surprised how critical folks are of him.

I was bored tonight so did a deep dive. Apologies for wordiness, please feel free to skip.

The premise: Which SEC big guys are you taking over Amari? Each team’s starting center is considered. My answer: Not many.

Amari stats (for comparison): 9.9/8.4/2.6, 58% FG, 1.6 Blocks, positive A/TO. Most analytics I have looked at rate his impact positively.

Auburn: Dylan Cardwell. 5.5/4.6/1.8, good FG%, 1.5 BPG. I would take Amari.

Alabama: Cliff Omoruyi. 7.4/6.4/.8, 74%(!!!) FG%, 1.1 BPG. In a vacuum I think Omoruyi is better, but Amari probably fits UK better stylistically. Toss up, lean Omoruyi.

Ole Miss: Malik Dia. Looks like they play small. 8.7/5.8/.9, FG% under 50, less than 1 BPG. I am taking Amari.

Florida: Rueben Chinyelu. 5.3/7.3/.9, 58% FG, 1.2 BPG. Have been impressed, think he is better than #’s say. Doing this in 19 mpg. Lean Amari, but I think Chinyelu is really good and has a very bright future.

Georgia: RJ Godfrey. 6.6/4.6/1.2, 52% FG, .7 BPG. Undersized and splits minutes with Somto, who I think is better. Amari is better.

Tennessee: Felix Okpara. 7.1/6.1/.3, 61% FG, 1.5 BPG. Give me Amari.

Mississippi State: Michael Nwoko. 7.3/4.9/.5, 57% FG, 1.1 BPG. Thought he played well against us but Amari is better.

Missouri: Trent Pierce. 8.4/2.9/.5, 52% FG, .3 BPG. Amari easily.

Texas A&M: Henry Coleman (A&M appears to start small like Ole Miss does). 8.6/5.3/.4, 58% FG, 0.0 (???) BPG. Not really comparable players (Payne who they bring off the bench is 8.9/4.8/.4). Give me Amari.

Vanderbilt: Devin McGlockton (see Ole Miss and A&M). 10.9/8.3/.9, 65% FG, 1.5 BPG. Good, unique player. Very undersized. I lean Amari, but if you wanted to play small, seems like you could make a great case for McGlockton.

Oklahoma: Sam Goodwin. 6.6/6.2/1.0, 61% FG, .8 BPG. Amari is better.

Arkansas: Take your pick of their big guys. They last started Jonas Aidoo. 6.2/4.5/.5, 58% FG, 1.3 BPG. Hasn’t been healthy but I would lean Amari even at full heath.

LSU: old friend Damion Collins! 8.4/4.4/.4, 64% FG, 1.6 BPG. Happy he has been healthy and found a role. I’d take Amari.

Texas: Kadin Shedrick. 8.2/5.9/.5, 56% FG, 1.8 BPG. Really good rim protector, not very skilled. Amari.

South Carolina: Nick Pringle. 10.7/6.6/1.4, 64% FG, .8 BPG. I have thought he is good when I have watched. I think Amari is a better rebounder/passer. Lean Amari.

If you have made it this far in the thread, dear reader, I commend you. I am sure I have made errors transcribing stats, or who may start more frequently at places, or even positionally. If you count Johni Broome as Auburn’s center or Collin Murray Boyles as South Carolina’s, I’d obviously take them over Amari.

But my point is I think Amari is a better player than we are generally giving him credit for, especially when you put him up against his SEC counterparts in what is considered this year’s best basketball conference.
