Andy Staples on Cals Contract

Basically Cal is not owed $33 million upfront, he isn’t owed anything upfront. Kentucky would have 6 years to pay the full amount. That’s $6 million a year, so let’s say Cal leaves for another job and his salary at the new job is $4 million, that would offset the buyout cost and Kentucky would only pay $2 million a year. I think it’s doable, Mitch’s legacy is riding on the biggest decision of his career.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with swinging and missing...

In the grand scheme of things, there's no shame in making offers to Drew and Hurley and coming up empty. You had a wish list, we offered, they said no. No biggie. That's the way it is in big-time athletics.

But the next offer is the one that could be a PR nightmare. If Billy D says no, it will quickly become embarrassing, as the "strike three" imagery gets thrown about by the media. Then if Donovan says no, we have to make sure the fourth guy is in the bag before we even ask. Strike four would be damaging to the brand. I don't even want to think about it.
